This is indeed the very best version of Stardust I have ever heard. Butterfield's trumpet sound is perfection, and Shaw's interpretation in his playing has to be one of the very best clarinet solos of the swing era. Thanks for this absolute classic !
This is the definitive instrumental version for me.
The clarinet solo at 2:06 is like a trail of cigarette smoke wafting dreamily upwards. There is a class, power and vitality to this music that we will never see again.
Please let me know... I had a tape an old friend of the family gave me when I was 8, it is exactly this song but with Beautiful vocals...anyone know where I can find it?
I'm only 14, but I can see myself a bit older flying in a B-17E over Nazi Germany...if only I was born in the right time...this beautiful music makes me think of B-17s for some reason.
Here's what happened: Billy Butterfield opens with his beautiful slow motion trumpet solo...then the strings....back to Butterfield... followed by Artie Shaw's soaring clarinet solo...and then to Jack Jenney with his amazing trombone "leap" ...and then the orchestra. My friends...it simply doesn't get any better than this.
Fuckin -a- I'm 49 years damn old only.....i see myself in the lae 1940's, in my 1951mercury kissin my gal gal, and parked beside the santa cruz boardwalk.....heavenly!!!
@wilsdomain - I've tried to build a channel of all the timeless music. So far, 9000 songs on 500 playlists including 111 lists for every year since 1900.
It's music from around the world, & over 360 artists each have playlists as well.
Thanks to vulcan for this - my last version became 'unavailable'.
Stardust is the best song ever created. Harry James has one of the best solos on this song along with Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy Gillespie and Artie Shaw are my favorite artists on Stardust.
I think this was the first take - incredible!

Hard to believe that Artie had been gone for almost 7 years now.He called this the quintesstenial big band version

Just found answer to my own question. The trombonist on this classic record is Jack Jenney.
Jenney died in 1945, age 35, in a Los Angeles hospital following surgery for a ruptured appendix,

Soloists Butterfield and Shaw are outstanding, but who is the trombone soloist? He's equally good.

I've heard it said more than a few times that this is the greatest jazz recording ever - arguable but not that far off-base.

@literallabyrinth: Could be the Tommy Dorsey recording with Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers. You should be able to find it on youtube.

On a recent edition of Big Band Jump Artie Shaw called this version the quintessential version big band version of this song.

Excellent. Thank you.
But what a difficult man to please.
To divorce Lana Turner AND Ava Gardner!
There is a story that Ava Gardner bounded in, glowing from a game of tennis. He asked 'what do you do Ava?' she replied 'I love you'.
He said that wasn't enough and divorced her.
