Originally Midway wanted to make a fighting game using/digitizing Jean Claude Van Damme, but he couldn't do it. So instead they took the idea further and made MK, but still homaged Van Damme with Johnny Cage (same first initials, see? Also both are moviestar martial artists, and Cage has Van Damme's split punch from Bloodsport). When the first MK movie was being made they then tried to get Van Damme to play Cage, but he declined as he wanted to do the Street Fighter movie instead...LOL!
