  • This greenhouse is worthless!...You're still relying on electric and computers. If you lost electric you would be screwed. If you really want to empress me do all that WITHOUT the electronic gizmos.

  • @Fawncomics Thank you for such an uplifting and positive feedback. You really know how to contribute. There is no need for any of the automation in this greenhouse. I put it in because I wanted to. If I chose to, it could run on solar...on average it consumes (with the electronics), less than 100 watts. If you can do better than this, please do so so I see how much of a genius your are.

  • Fantastic setup. You can see the hard work and thought you put into this. Very nice job!

  • Excellent setup! Why don't you use a fish that you can also harvest to eat?

  • that's a lot of material crammed in a 10x12 space. Nice video. Gonna try some Mango's and Dragon fruit. Gonna use 16 to 20 inch planters. Do you think that would work? Or do you think the plants will get too big for the greenhouse?

  • I'm back to the cool part of youtube :) your greenhouse is the coolest I've seen :)

  • Can you post or send me details on the usb to controller wiring and programming. If you have a price on it let me know. Thanks, Ken.

  • did you say that you do your own usb functional relay programming? Wow if so =] What OS is your dell runing?

  • Just brilliant. Nicely done!

  • What background in computer science do you have? You seem well versed in hacking both at the software level and the hardware level. I basically want to do the same thing you've done but also rig up a robotic arm at some point that can also harvest veggies when ready. I imagine some kind of vegetable recognition algorithm (like facial recognition but for veggies) could be used.

  • @enticed2zeitgeist Electronic engineering and computer science...a loooong time ago!

  • Wowee. I'm sure you've heard this before but I'll say it again, amazing job! Couple quick questions, for your flood and drain beds what did you line them with? Looks like pond liner, I'm not sure. Also, what is the medium? And finally, do you check pH and EC and if so, what are the values generally? Sorry for all the questions but I have to know every detail of this work of art.

  • @DamersenNetwerk yup, it's a standard pond liner. The medium in some of the beds is crushed granite. Most of my beds are now filled with expanded shale. I rarely check the pH but it usually floats around 6-7-7.0 Make sure you check out my new geodesic dome videos. ;-)

  • Man thats impressive - awesome work and thanks so much for sharing

  • Great set-up Would you like to create a bigger Aquaponics Farm? Looking for designer, builder ongoing support, and teacher for hand over.

    onecommunityranch (dot)org

  • You are way above my level. I am setting up a system to mimic Will Allen's setup at Growing Power in Milwaukee. No computer equipment needed. If I had to learn to do what you are doing, it would never happen. I would remain fishless.

  • Wow!! I am impressed with your set up. I would love to learn how you do it. Keep up the good work. Well done!!

  • Teach me your ways!!!! I want to do this.

  • how about doing this with trout then you could eat the fish after with your veg ?

  • We need DETAILS boss on how to copy your setup! LOL you should be very proud as it looks like you have your bases covered inside and out!

  • This is amazing, may i ask how much you spend building this ? I am fancying making one myself :)

  • ur a genius

  • nice

  • Would it be possible to transform the hayloft of a barn into a green house in usda zone 4?

  • dude wow i got 7 greenhouse !27 by 125 !i would like it to be all computerise like yours, is it possible!???and would like some info on how i can achive this!

  • the coolest home setup ive ever seen

  • two thumbs up

  • Goldfish have no stomach, so it's recommended you feed them several times a day but small quantities.

  • @cubaniton74 yes. They get fed 3 to 5 times a day, depending on the water temperature.

  • Awesome job you done here.Very methodical and well planned out

  • nice but we have to reduce engergy consumption as well to make a cleaner world.... anyway you have a lot of skills !! Do those few little fish creacte enough nitrate to feed your plants ?

  • @TheBSideDJ These were new fish at the time this was taken....they are much bigger now. This system runs on very little power....it's cheaper to run this than it is to go to the store to buy veggies. ;-)

  • Nicely done good sir, nicely done.

  • I'm slowly working on a commercial version of it. Like "Bigelow Brook Farm" on Facebook for future announcements!

  • Great Job.. I like the controller you're using that you designed a program for to control all the functionality. How can I get something like this? Have you thought of putting together a controller that you can sell commercially . Sign me up. How can I get one ...

  • Amazing... so much goodness packed into such a small space. And I'm struggling to grow a couple of strawberry trays on the windowsill :D A lot to learn from this!

  • What part of the country do you live in?

  • you made me really interested in aquaponics and farming, i gotta try doing things like this in the future

  • Whats your cost?

  • Congratulations on a fantastic setup. You've done far more than I plan to with the same greenhouse, and some think perhaps you've gone overboard. I think it's great, as you've demonstrated some things that would be absolutely necessary on a larger scale, such as tracking the amount of sunlight. Do you mind if I ask where you are located?

  • @okieroadhunter We're in Eastford, CT.

  • This may be a stupid question, but can you use a method like this on a really small scale? And with 'small scale' I mean like a 5 gallon fish tank and just a couple of plants. After I saw your greenhouse on kirstendirksen's channel, I got really interested in aquaponics and definitely want to try building my own little system.

  • @RobertGraaf I've seen people make them with the little 10 gallon fish tanks and plastic container that sits on top of it!

  • How do you pollinate?

  • @hell0jp in the early spring when it's still cold, an electric toothbrush. Once I can open the vents, the bees come right in.

  • Ingenious.

But I wonder about the cost/benefit on that scale. Have you compared the total cost of your home-grown food with buying it in the store?

  • The graphs are awesome. Would be nice to have included a legend.

  • @BigBearHuskyMusher There's a legend along the bottom. Sometimes the navigation bar that youtube shows on the screen covers it up.

  • I don't understand why on your graph we don't see more of a continuation of temps and sunlight. ie you would think purple line 9:19am 5/16 @ 72 would be near 9:19am 5/17's . You must of had a cloudy/cold day on 5/17 compared to 5/16's. The green and the blue lines(probably tank temp and whatever) are the only ones close

  • what if a fish dies and poisons the H2o

  • @oildrum101 fish die all the time in ponds and the ocean. It's no difference. Either the other fish peck at it and eat most it, or I take it out and throw it in the compost pile.

  • You mean all those plants are being fed by just those little fish that we saw??

  • @saeidmomtahan When I took this video, this was a new batch of fish...I had an accident with the previous batch. ;-)

  • You can survive a zombie attack now.

  • this is pretty cool, im doing a hydroponic community garden. i may also have a aquaponic garden thanx to you

  • Sure looks better in the summer don't it?

  • @BigBearHuskyMusher It sure does....a lot more food too!

  • dang dude you went all high tec with that green house iv never seen one like that but thats cool

  • If you make the pipe too big, it may not siphon. It's also important to have some trap in the bottom so it has a place to burp. Check on the forums at aquaponicscommunity (dot) com or backyardaquaponics (dot) com. There's a lot of good information in there.

  • you are the only person i can get to answer my questions. I am new to this system but and working hard to build my own little space here at home. I find this very neat. I am trying to build a bell siphon that will work. i have built two now and this one i just built wont siphon... any tips?

  • That was really cool! Thank you so much for sharing!

  • Verrrry kewl! I like it am gonna research this technique more. Thx!

  • Very impressive system but think the technology is too much for most. Should be possible build cheaper system using tap timers ($30 ea) to drain water from fish tank down to to the plant box, then use another tap timer in the plant box (offset 30 minutes) to drain water down to a serge tank with sump pump returning water back up to the fish tank. Minimizing differences in heights of tanks (make wider) should reduce electricity required for pumping. Perhaps 80w solar panel with 60ah battery.

  • what are the chances of getting a copy of that software and a wireing diagram? im currently raising 8 squash plants in a plant bowl 18 inchs around with a bell syphon that dumps back into my pond. i want to enclose the grow beds and use my old laptop... can I get a copy of the software and wire diagram??

  • dude this is one of the best greenhoues set ups i've ever seen, great job

  • Vett Nice setup

  • Wow! You really put some work into that system. Nice!

  • Hey I like the upgraded doors that you built. What did you use to build them? It looks like you used some treated 2x2's and attatched them to a 2x2 frame? What type hinges did you use? I am in the process of building mine at the moment and have most of the frame up. I have done some research and everyone seems to say that the doors are not that great! I am trying to make the needed upgrades to withstand the high winds on the eatern plains of Colorado. Any help would be greatly appreciate

  • @eaglesct00 the frames are just some treated 2x2's that are ripped down to fit the existing frame. I had some old standard hinges that I used. Most important is to secure the plastic glazing down. Search near the beginning of my blog at web4deb dot blogspot dot com and there's a bunch of info in there. I also reference a blog by mudhouse you should check.

  • Are you feeding your family solely on your greenhouse and farm? How many hungry people (who eat 1700 to 2000 celeries per day) can the aquaponic greenhouse alone feed on a continual basis?

Also, have you thought about building other off-the-grid type stuff like a Sally Centrifuge (which is a functional centrifuge made from a salad spinner [materials costing somewhere between 30 and 40 dollars])?

    /)_/)

    (‘.-‘)

    /(“)(“)

    ObeyBunny

  • @ObeyBunny The greenhouse doesn't produce enough to feed the entire family. We have a larger garden for most of our veggies. We go to the grocery store like everyone else. ;-) The farm produces corn for a dairy farm in the area.

  • @web4deb

Oh well, can't blame me for dreaming :)

It would be pretty neat to grow all my family's food out a 100 square foot area, though.

  • Ooh la la!

  • Wow! You are quite the technical guy.. I can't believe that you set all of that up...

    Looks great.

  • it's a standard sump pump that has a float switch built into it. When the sump is full, it just turns on. No fancy controller for it. ;-)

  • How does you sump pump get triggered to pump water out into your fish tank? Thank you for the amazing upload!

  • So very cool young man...so very cool

  • Wow, sickest hobby greenhouse I've ever seen. Are you using a PLC for control and SCADA software for logging? If so what program are you using?

  • @givinlivin It's all custom designed and programmed.

  • Impressive!

  • WOW!!

  • What type of plant and animals are best for a Northwest temperature?

Have you compared your data with regular agriculture and aquaponic plant growth? If you had can you share it with me?

I also need to ask if you have compared the energy and water use comparing regular agriculture and aquaponics. If you had could you please share it with me? Can you make a profit out of aquaponics? How?

Have you thought of having a Community aquaponics project?

  • @minhakd Why are you pasting the exact same questions on everyone's videos? You should join some of the forums and do a little research. Every climate is different and you need to understand how plants and fish will grow in your particular area.

  • @minhakd Talipia are great but, need temp around 70-80 Winter in tennesse get's really cold so im building greenhouse w/ a rocket heater love to have solar aswell. Im thinking of having crawdad's to be my bottom feeder's.

  • Very nice! Where did you get your strawberry tower? I use duckweed to feed my fishies and use a rocket stove for heating in winter less wood used (:

  • @ahsookie1 The tower is home made....check my channel for the instructions on how to build one - very easy to do! Also, you may want to check out my videos about the geodesic dome greenhouse I'm building....that will have a rocket mass heater in it.

  • I am stunned , for a Harbor Freight Project I feel like I just got a tour of a NASA experiment for deep space farming. Are you logging all the data to improve the process as well. WOW Impressive!!!!!!!!

  • @drwrencho Thanks. I have a couple of years worth of data. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it all! ;-)

  • haha I like the way you think. I'm a fellow computer scientist and think this is outstanding.

  • Is your heater plugged into the grid or so you have NG, Propane or something like solar? Also how do you think a little wood/pellet stove would work?

  • Must be very fun to build all of this.

  • Really nice. I have a watering can.

  • WOW. NICE JOB. GENIUS.

  • WOW. NICE JOB

  • Awesome system, love the electronics!

  • You are amazing!

  • Electronic Engineering and computer science.

  • @web4deb This is badass man! great job super setup

  • Hey what did you go to school for to learn how to set up automatic system like this? I am very interested in doing the same thing in a underground home.

  • Wow great video. Very inspirational. Do you consult or do this professionally. Thanks A Lot For The Info.

  • @thomaslecky203 yes, I run a business. view my channel home page or go to BigelowBrook (dot) com

  • If there was a setup competition you would be telescopicaly far away from the second one! You love what you are doing there!!!!!! I am waiting to see the results.

"RESPECT" IS THE WORD THAT IS MISSING TODAY!!

  • Dude. That is a seriously mad setup. Drool.

  • Thank you very much for sharing.

  • dude,, you are a McGiver mf!!!!! your place rocks!

  • Very nice, I like the experimenting with multiple methods!

  • That is incredible

  • Very nice!

  • very nice setup. thanks for the video!

  • My dad called them up to buy a greenhouse but didnt ship to canada, gonna have to make a pvc one not a good but still work. i love yours !

  • can I use my pond for feed the plants

  • @1996arne You usually need to have a lot of fish so that there are enough nutrients. If it's a large pond, it probably will not work.

  • @1996arne You can use tilapia they are fast grower's and you can use urine (peeponic' dont giggle it really work's) while you wait for them to grow. I would use my own becouse you want to know your source. Hope this helps(:

  • Why do you have so many different tanks? Is there some benefit to having multiple tanks?

  • @enticed2zeitgeist They were free. Beggars can't be choosers. ;-)

  • It grow`s faster and bigger,if i would grow,i would had choose organic, but then it would not been fruits or flowers ;o) nice grow!

  • The green organic is the best!

  • well done sir !!...i hope mine turns out as-well...thank you 4 the post...peace

  • Not bad, have you considered adding some Phoenix Worms to feed the fish with? With how much compost material you should have with the greenhouse and garden, you should be able to get some decent sized batches of them. Would add fertilizer for the garden as well. BTW are those Coy fish?

  • @web4deb thanks

  • I would like to build something similar. What are the dimensions of your grow beds?

  • @TheQtubeTrainer roughly 3x5 by 1' deep. They vary a bit to fit inside the greenhouse.

  • king!

  • Wow you should grow weed!

  • What are the little units that are attached to things like the fish feeder? Thanks!

  • Thats my dream greenhouse right there.

  • omg you are brilliant!

  • you are SUPER SMART

  • Don't you need more biomass of fish to supply all those vegetables?

  • @zigzigerblat Yes. When I filmed this, they were new fish. I had an accident with the other ones. ;-)

  • @web4deb Uh oh. Well that is good to know. I have commented on several videos questioning about lack of biomass. All of them have responded with a good reason why there were temporarily not enough fish. I am glad that I cleared that up because this seems to be a common problem and I was quite confused by it.

  • @web4deb what kind of accident....? lol.

  • This is AMAZING! Where can I get info on how to build that USB interface?

  • WTF!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!

  • You have an awesome greenhouse, like i love what you have going on. wish i could have something as intellegent as that computer, very selfsufficent.

    Great job again

    Harris

  • how much did something like that cost to put together??

  • @Wakerens I couple grand, give or take.

  • you should combine this with omega garden

  • Great greenhouse system. Check mine out, I think it grows more vegetables but no fish and does not use electricity.

  • Great Job.

I really like the strawberry column thing you have going.

  • @CMLovejoy Thanks. On my channel, I posted a video on how to make them.

  • Do you have this growing food year round?

  • @uhateusaFU yes....sort of. During the winter I keep it at 36F at night. The lettuce will grow, but will take the entire winter. You can see it in my other video "Winter Update".

  • Hi web4deb, I really like your greenhouse ideas. Thank you for sharing. I was wondering where you got those strawberry vertical tubes? And How you grow them. It looks like there is soil. Can all the plants stay in water all the time or do you have to drain it completly each cycle. I am thanking you for any advice you can give me.

  • @knower777 They are all filled with stone and they get watered about once every 1.5 hours for 10 minutes. I have a new video on how they are made were you can see a lot of good details. Thanks!

  • are the fish really happy in there?

  • Have you gys herd of prop s510? it makes growing food illeagle thay say but how true is it? i know prop s510 passed i just dont know where to look up the bill for my self. I know in some states its illeagle to catch rain watter even the water that runs off your roof and that is the sad truth but any ideas on prop s510?

  • @gary77777778888888 Google "Food Safety Modernization Act"

  • @web4deb Nice. My question is about your auto fish feeder. Did you build it or buy it? If it's a commercial piece, what is it?

  • @fishandworms It's homemade. There are some details about it on my blog that is listed in the description of this video. Find the entry from April 10, 2009. Thanks!

  • $2000.00 I will just stick to my 36'x120' outside garden that cost about 100.00 year to grow. I would say I get $2000.00 in food out of it a year. Where you get 100.00 in food out of your $2000.00 Garden! LOL

  • @Z71Ranger I get far more than $100 food out of the greenhouse. I bet per square foot, I get a higher yield out of the greenhouse on some types of plants. It also consumes far less water. Both the regular garden and greenhouse have their pros and cons.

  • Thats realy realy cool !

  • very very nice.

Where did you learn to do that?

im portuguese and id love to create something like your aquaponic grenn house.can you help me?

  • @rastamatias The best place to learn would be one of the forums. try backyardaquaponics (dot) com or aquaponicscommunity (dot) com

  • Cost of an old laptop from my office with wifi, display, USB, & hardrive......free! ;-)

  • Super!

but insted of an old dell laptop. Why not try a PLC (Programable logic controlle.)

cost of a simens LOGO! 300 CHF might be under 200$

  • Královská výbava, ale tak málo rybek to nemůže pohnojit.. A ta zahrada:) Jóóó panečku

Škoda, že není online stream z web kamery:)

  • There's always someone to take the outdoors out of outdoor activities.

  • This is amazing! What a great use of space! You truly have an ingenious gift

  • Respect! now turn your data and set up into an ebook, you can sell it no problem...

  • hey i was wondering where did u buy the software and the automatic monitor of sun light and nutrients?

  • @youtubsuxfv I designed the hardware and software myself.

  • How much did all of that cost? I would be interested in doing something similar in the future.

  • @flyingemu27 for the greenhouse and all the homemade growbeds, probably around $2K
