I disagree with everyone that says these were the good old days. I knew the atari sucked even back then. The "Good old days" didnt start for me until the NES.
@crashbfan23 I agree! Those days always had me hoping for better games, but I never imagined we would have what we have "these days". I wonder what the future will bring that make today's games seem primitive?
First, the C64 was quite a computer ... until its specs and inability to upgrade the hardware made it suitable only for gaming and not much else. Plus, there were other things to look forward to shortly after C64, like Amiga.
As for the 2600, the C64 was a factor. But if the C64 hadn't come out, the 2600 still would've sunk from the Atari vs. Activision debacle and Atari's own missteps stemming from Mr. Bushnell's sale of his company to Warner.
Unable to upgrade the hardware, well then you don't know the C64. Ever hear of the Super CPU which put it up to 33mhz, you could add Jiffydos which helped with load times and with the disc commands.
Plus you could upgrade the ram with carts that plugged into the back of the computer.
Sure the Amiga was better and we should have Amiga's TODAY not shit windows or crappy macs.
Another thing to think about: Commodore and Atari are somewhat intertwined.
Why? Jack Tramiel founded and ran Commodore until his ouster shortly after the success of the C64.
Jack Tramiel later bought Atari from Warner Communications, running it with the intention to beat Commodore at their own game in the home computer market, allowing Atari's home video game operations to languish.
Another point: the 2600 ran on MOS (6507 CPU). MOS became a division of Commodore in the late 70's.
You know, the father, the friend, and the mother all have something happening in the commercial. The dad get's shown tha way(left or right I dunno) the friend plays on a rainy day and the mom misses. but the sis. NOTHING!
@burr1aj No,I meant the Atari 2600 fan club that they had in the 1980's.I think it was $12 to join.Atari sent a fan club magazine called Atari Age that had video game trivia, coupons for your next purchase and technical writing about up coming coin-operated and home games. If you go to old school video game conventions some vendors sell them.Thats another thing I miss about the 70's and 80's;there are no more fan club magazines its all on the web.
Naw... People these days just have dirtier minds and are way more cynical, but then again, I would have poked fun of these 'family' commercials back then because growing up in my family was a living hell and the family aspect of this would have came across as BS to me.
My dad is the one who introduced me to atgari (the 2600) in 1982.
Frogger. It was the only cartridge he had and the only one I played for a whole month. Funny how it held my attention for so long but modern games can barely last me a week.
Despite the 2600 being past my gen (I was born in 1981, so I was too young for Atari at it's height), this still brings a tear simply because gaming was so simplistic and yet even today allot of those same games can still hold my attention for hours.
IIRC, one of them was called 'Custer's Revenge', in which General Custer rapes a Native American woman-and they say today's games are sick? The PS2 NEVER came up with this, nor did the N64, Game Cube, PS1, or any other modern system.
atari either came up with it... its not like u can produce unlicenced games today like back then. besides its not like u can bang a girl in gta ? shoot the shit out people? ever played dead or alive??? man theirs more sex in todays games then in any atari game. u make no sence dude. think about it.
The Atari 2600 is the greatest system ever made, not because of it's games but because it lasted for so long, I mean people were still buying 2600s when the SNES was at it's height.
How about you do a Google search for most sold game console of all time and see what you come up with? I love ignorant people get when it comes to facts and opinions. Is the PS2 the best in my opinion? Hell no lol. Is it the most sold? Yep.
Good Memories......ahhhh.....I LOVED the 2600....remember the game "Indy 500" that had special "paddle" style controllers that were basically rotary encoders?
lol, both the commercial and the system SUCKED.

Who STILL has the top selling Computer of all time?
Explain that to me. It sure as hell wasn't anything by ATARI.
It is the COMMODORE 64.
It lasted from 1982 to 1994 commercially and is still having commercial games written for it even today.
Atari has got nothing on the Commodore 64. It was thanks to the C64 which helped kill your precious 2600.

And this "upgrade" came out when? If it came out around the time where it would have mattered, I may take your claim more seriously.
"you could add Jiffydos which helped with load times and with the disc commands.
Plus you could upgrade the ram with carts that plugged into the back of the computer."
All too little, too late when they came out.

This looks like an "animatic" for a planned commercial that would have been completed with live actors.
This was the 1980s, before every single thing was themed on sex. It's so sad now that tall people can think of is incest and child rape.
