The word Russia is believed to have come from Rus. There is a variety of ideas on where it came from. Maybe from the word for Sweden, Ruotsi, or the old Norse meaning, rowers or seamen. It could also be from the Swedish tribe called the Rhos. Also, Russians weren't Vikings, however their foundations and early nobility were of Viking ancestry. The Rus was a name for the military organization that`s named druzhina in Russian. I don`t think the word Rus is connected with rowers. Old Norse *roths- also meant military team. Viking actually means "Raider" an was used to refer to anyone who raided up and down coasts and along inland rivers using boats. They were fast attacks, killing or scattering everyone, taking slaves and loot, burning the buildings then retreating to their boats and sailing away.

The word Russia is believed to have come from Rus. There is a variety of ideas on where it came from. Maybe from the word for Sweden, Ruotsi, or the old Norse meaning, rowers or seamen. It could also be from the Swedish tribe called the Rhos. Also, Russians weren't Vikings, however their foundations and early nobility were of Viking ancestry. Eventually they intermixed completely with the native Slavic population.

The Rus was a name for the military organization that`s named druzhina in Russian. I don`t think the word Rus is connected with rowers. Old Norse *roths- also meant military team. The Scandinavians who lived among the Slavs called themselves Rhos because they were military men and a part of the military organization. Slavs thought that was a people`s name.

And the name Rus can have different interpretations. Why only ROSlagen? How about Ruscia-Russia-Ruegen island? Old-RUSsa-River, etc.? There`re a lot of the roots which sound Rus and we don`t have a strong prove that only one is correct.

E.g., there`s a theory they came from the Ruegen island which was called Ruscia in the past, etc. Of course, some people from Roslagen could visit the Eastern Europe(as traders did) and left some runes but that doesn`t matter those visitors were the Rus. Well Vikings were equivalent to Pirates in the day of the Norse. However do not mistake Vikings as Norseman. Not all Norseman were Vikings.
