I think it's cool when one gets to hear many different version of the same song. I have heard this song by a few different people. I love the chesty quality of the alto here. She gives a rich contrast to the light executing soprano in the piece. I sometimes sing a made up middle line to add harmonies to it when I listen to this at home.
@Himmelsfunken and have I a different edition, or is the Chrite not written as a duet for Sop 1 & Sop 2. not alto? But all the versions on here get the alto to double-up and sing sop 2 as well. Shame, asI'd love to hear a version with 2 sops.
@pianomags You are right, it IS written for two sopranos but it's more or less a financial question why the least promoters cannot engage 2 sopranos, 1 alto, 1 tenor, 1 baritone and 1 bass (as it is meant by Bach). Most of the times there are only 4 soloists and then you have to compromise.

@angietihi
I agree with the soprano but the alto is far too heavy for my taste...

The conductor is the Swede Herbert Blomstedt. But who are the singers and musicians that are singing and playing so very wonderful?
