I lived in the Canal Zone for almost 2 years. Ft. Clayton. I use to be able to see the ships going through the canal every day from my window. I will never forget how truly exotic this country was. I hope that it stays wild and beautiful.
I went to Panama when I was a teenager with the intention of finding primary rainforest. It's one of the ironies of my life that I never found it in Panama. I found primary moist forest on Barro Colorado and I found wet forest in San Blas but it wasn't primary forest. I finally found primary wet forest on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala and I've been in a few more since. I LOVE it! Paradise on earth. I loved Panama too for many other reasons.
Sure. Most of the tropical wet forest I saw was on the San Blas side of Panama where the rainfall is high year round. It was tropical wet, i.e. the ultimate conditions, but it was secondary, i.e. it had been cut down by the Kuna's slash and burn agriculture and was growing back but had not yet reached maturity. It was pretty tangled, unlike a primary forest where the canopy is so dense it doesn't allow much undergrowth. There is primary rain forest in Panama but well inside.
Mute this video and watch it paired with "808 State" by Pacific State.
