  • I just wrote to Eleanor Powell's son, Peter Ford, and he sent in this answer:

"Yes, that is Queen High shot in New York. Mom had a bit in that one dancing on that table. She was in another during this time, but i can't remember the name - it's in my files. Peter"

  • eleanor powell and ginger rogers in the same film. that is enough to give someone a nose bleed! what a high! i may be up in the clouds all day now!

  • that ending is certainly like eleanor doing her turnings

  • Sorry, but that isn't Eleanor Powell. In 1931 she was 19, not 17, and she'd made a big name for herself on Broadway, so much so that she would never do, or be asked to do, such an anonymous bit as this with all these other girls. She didn't make her first movie till 1935.

  • This film is from 1930, and she could have done this... as it would have been filmed back East. I'm checking on it. Sure looks like her to me!

  • I think the guy with the mustache in the beginning is Frank Morgan, the Wizard of Oz.

  • That's the Wizard the on The Wizard Of Oz!

  • what a treat!

  • Ginger Rogers is the lady singing at the beginning but it is Eleanor Parker as said at the end doing the tap dancing

    GREAT vintage stuff !!!!

  • Eleanor POWELL

  • Gosh, that's swell! Just the epitome of that rollickin' fun 1920's atmosphere!

  • Ginger Rogers = boop oop a doop

  • AWESOME TOTALLY AWESOME

    oh and TOTALLY AWESOME

  • Where did you get this rare clip of Ginger Rogers? I have a copy of every movie Ginger was is except for three. "Queen High", "The Sap from Syracuse", and "Hat Check Girl". Do you have access to the entire movie? This is a glimpse into Ginger's early career and her struggles with movie roles. She was the greatest! She could do anything and do it exceptionly well.

  • I think your wrong>>>>>>thats a VERYvery YOUNG gingerROGERS!

  • Ooh look it's Frank Morgan! I'd recognize his voice from a mile away.

  • I should see the comments starting four months ago. Wasn't Eddie Cantor rather overshadowed by Al Jolson. Their vocal styles are rather similar and they both blacked up..

  • ...?

  • A question mark is a rather unhelpful comment. My comment is relevant, you're an Eddie Cantor fan according to your website. Admittedly that has nothing to do with this particular video but so what. They can't arrest you for it.

  • Love this and a shame Eleanors talents were not snapped up earlier.Love Ginger Rogers in this looking so early 30s with the frock and waved hair.I recall old ladies still dressing like this so it is odd sometimes looking at these old clips of 20 year olds dressed in the same way!

  • A wonderful rare clip.

Many thanks for posting it !

    Matt

  • Yes, thanks for sharing this with all - something I would certainly never get to see otherwise! Ellie was a bit of a beanpole teen in this, wasn't she? How she blossomed in the next few years! And Ginger was a far cry from the cool grace she would later have. A great reminder that we are always changing. What fun!

  • Keep in mind Ginger was 19 at the time...

  • I assume that this is the better quality video because I can see her bobbed cloche style hair clearly now. You're right it's just like Louise Brookes' hairstyle. I still can't pick out Ginger Rogers. Which one is she?

  • Ginger is the one cheering up Frank Morgan.

  • Thanks a lot for the information. Well I've looked and looked and I can't recognise her as Ginger Rogers. Perhaps it's the dark hair. She looks a bit old in this to my mind. Frank Morgan calls her Molly I think. I had a great uncle called Frank Morgan. Did this Frank Morgan star in or appear in any notable films? I know of a Harry Morgan, he was the old bugger in M.A.S.H in command of the unit.

Do you like 1920s and 30s music?

  • Frank Morgan was a well known actor in silent films and many, many productions during the 1930s. His best known role was as the wizard in Wizard of Oz (1939).

  • Thank you kindly for the information. I can barely remember the Wizard of Oz (he was really an Australian magician you know). However I don't think the Wizard i.e. Frank Morgan is revealed in the film is he or if he is it is merely fleetingly. So in his greatest role he is virtually invisible. Were there silent films in the 1930s? I thought they virtually disappeared after Al Jolson's jazz singer appeared.

  • He appears quite a lot in Wizard of Oz, not only as the Wizard. Most actors have a double role in that film...the aunt is the witch, the farmers are tin man, the lion and straw man, etc...

  • Thank you for the information. I'm afraid I still don't recall his visage. Yes I do recall that the aunt was the Wicked Witch of the West I think. W of O is I believe the only American fairy tale of note at least whereas and no offence intended we Europeans are the masters of the fairy tale.

  • This is simply amazing! I thought I would never get to see this footage. Thanks very much for taking the time to upload it.

  • Wonderful to see this very first feature film appearance by Eleanor Powell. Thank you!

  • Yes your all welcome :)

  • I've commented on this video, I forgot to involve you.

  • You're right the panels in Frank Morgan's office are a superb example of Art Deco. Speaking as a man I think this clip clearly demonstrates that dresses are far sexier than trousers and particularly jeans. It would appear our American commentators either failed to see or traversed my little joke about the Wizard of Oz lol.
