This is the deal with Naruto. It was almost totally pointless in the first series and, yes, was childish, but in Shippuden, it got more emotional and had depth and a plot to it. And eventually, it grew to have the same amount of emotionality as Avatar: The Last Airbender does, though it took a longer time to happen. Personally, I love both of the series and enjoy re-watching both of them.
I don't know why people have to hate on Naruto. Both Avatar and Naruto are good shows that deal with complex issues of friendship and war. I think it's the differences between them that make each unique and special. I love the comradery between Aang, Katara, Toph, and Sokka! I love Iroh and his mentoring role in Zuko's life! I love the central theme of hate in war, and the allusion to nuclear weapons in Naruto! I love the naruto-sauske firend-enemy dynamic! Why berate one and praise the other?

I can't really comment, having only watched the first few episodes but also the fact that it's kind of never ending and full of fillers is what can turn people off.

Your right about Naruto when it comes to Part 1 because it is pretty childish except for the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, but Shippuden is sooooooo much better because the plot in it is very deep an deals with problems that today's society has (*cough* Itachi Pursuit Arc and Invasion of Pein Arc *cough*).
