do you have any tips for someone whose 15, really wanting to play roller derby, but is afraid of actually talking to a rollergirl. I live close to the ICT rollergirls, and my boyfriends mom is one, but I'm afraid of asking her about it. I used to do speed skating on ice, is roller derby kind of like it? and do you have any tips where I can get the equipment? my familys tight on money,so where would be the best place to get the equipment?
Don't know about the States but in the UK you have to be 18 before you can play. You may be able to take part in the basic skating drills when you're 17. Otherwise, you'll have to wait til you're old enough.
okay. thank you, it kind of sucks though. I've completly fallen in love with this sport, well it's not that long of a wait. I think those are the same ages here too.
Most derby girls happy to have a chat about their sport. Perhaps wait for an event that your local derby league is holding. As for equipment, your local rink might get rid of their ex-rental skates. If you're not sure about derby, this is a good way to get yourself into some skates, without big cost. As for knee pads, elbow pads, helmet and wrist guards, keep an eye out on eBay. Most of the derby girls I know stated out with a really cheap pack of pads and a bike helmet.
You can always get involved with the league by volunteering. Leagues are almost always looking for volunteers to help out with stuff. That way you can learn about the rules and how the league is run, so when you're old enough to participate, all you'll have to learn is how to skate.
Also if there is a rink that has speed skating lessons near you, take them. Learning to speed skate helps out a lot with your endurance and keeping the proper form.
@andeariffel Why are you scared to talk to her about it? Most derby girls are happy to talk derby with anyone who will listen. :-) Many derby leagues have junior derby for girls who are too young to play derby; you might want to look into that. As for the equipment, you might want to see what you can pick up used. Your boyfriend's mom may have some advice on that.
It would be a bit better if you actually explained how to complete the laterals, I think - ie, where to place your weight, how to bend your legs, et cetera. Nice work, though - it's good to finally see some how-to's. Just don't forget the actual "how" part!
YEAH...is that ice??

They should clarify that this is about cutting across the skating lane, not "cutting the track" as the penalty is called!

I know this is a delayed response, but here in Oregon we have a Junior league, and I'm pretty sure they are younger than 18.
