I admire his courage!!! He pulls his chest register up to the top and sounds strained and tight. That why he isn't able to hold his top notes as written. There's just so much one can do with the chest register. I encourage him to work on his falsetto and nurture it into a head voice where he can use it to sing those high notes.

But if see the original score, Puccini indeed wrote the high B shorter than most tenors sing it today to show off the B.
