Steelhead and rainbows are in fact the same species - Onchorynchus mykiss. You can cross a landlocked Wyoming rainbow with a steelhead from the BC salt and get fertile offspring. Rainbows with access to the salt will typically (but not always) migrate and get larger than their landlocked peers. "Steelhead" is the colloquial, but certainly not scientific, name for these migratory rainbows. (And yes, migratory rainbows/steelhead exist in Argentina and Chile.)
