my respects go out to shane seggar for putting together this awesome doc.showing perspectives from both traditional and contemporary samoan lives.one love to all my samoan people out there whether banging on the streets or living the fa'asamoa life i still got love for yall.
AgreeS wit Samoantoa08 100% , but SoLe , SOS Started in 1976 in West Long Beach , Ask the OGz And RSP ( Royal Samoan Posse Crip Gang ) Started in West Santa Ana , OC in 1978 and still active to this day... You find them on Pacific and Magnolia , W/S Santa Ana where all the the Samoan churches are....
Luke do y'all thang Cuz . SA-GANG till my time I'd up USO !
Man I love Western and American Samoa , My HamoZ in tha islands
Plz dnt h8 tha Hamoz doin it hard in tha hoods of USA / Nz / AUS ..We proud of our Culture an reppin that SAAA 2 tha fulleSt.. ALofaz to dat SA-GANG on dat W3ST / EAST of STRONG b3ACH . CaL1 562 . , Hawaii , UTAH , SaCtwn , WA , OR , NZ , AK and AuS ...
I was borin in new zealand, raised in australia and have lived in Samoa
I noticed that Samoans in America tend to be out of touch with their roots and follow the paths of african americans.
The only time i look down on samoans is when i see them throwing up gang signs. I still got love for them.. but i'd love them more if they weren't imitating the TV.
just to correct u my fellow tuafafine..Samoans in USA do not copy the tv..they grew up in gangbangin..they did not have or watched TV's..some are wanna be gangsters..but SOS started in the 80s way before gangbanging was popluar in movies
i know the samoans in america grow up around that stuff but whats the kiwi and aussie samoan's excuse? We live in countries where an education is thrown at u for free and yet they still choose to be petty criminals.. it's too sad.
But i'm sure it's not impossible for a person to be raised with love and understanding right from wrong in the ghetto.
@LayzieTeine What education is free? University? That definitely isn't free in Australia and NZ. From Pre-school parents have to pay. Then through primary school to high school. And if you had any real idea about crime in NZ, you'll find that the 'petty criminals' are actually mostly Maori and European.
lol true, but these samoans are not imitating the tv,they "live" the life the tv portrays, people looking from the outside in will never get it.one love to all the uso's in all the four corners.
Identity is key, we have to go beyond culture, beyond male/female, beyond age. I'm samoan and I'm proud but before that, the questions that continues to roam this world we live in still remains.
1)what was the beginning?
2)what is the end?
3)whats my purpose?
4)who am i?
I'm full samoan born in america. I love my culture, but there still resides an imperfection in culture that cannot be trusted. Theres much to be redeemed.
"I love my culture, but there still resides an imperfection in culture that cannot be trusted. Theres much to be redeemed." What imprefection are you referreing to? What do you think needs to be "redeemed"?
The whole Joking, slandering one another down, shame base, not wanting to lose face as the gentlemen put it "malosi" not wanting to be "palaai". Theres legalistic factors that influence relationships btween elders and young people. You do this, this this, or get punished. The whole Drunkenness being apart of samoan culture, not true. Conforming ourselves to standards of poverty. BINGO, haha totally not samoan. Discipline is out of frustration, anger, not love. Selfishness.
Wow! I never considered that as a possible alternative. Discipline--An outward manifestation of one's own frustration. Personally, I would prefer to think it to be a means of establishing order; Not power!
However, I do feel that the Samoa we know today is a product of various factors, (ie Colonization, Westernization, Modernization, etc). Each has influenced the Samoan society and has taken shape in many aspects of Samoan culture--In one form or another!?
True, colonization, etc. have taken effect on samoan culture in many ways. We can even go to the extent that since no one is perfect, how can culture be perfect. We can't deny that theres a power of evil in this world right? How do we know that evil has not taken effect on culture as well? I'm not saying it's evil to be samoan, but as DarealDUBriDah shared about colonization influencing samoan culture, can evil do the same? The good thing is that there is GOOD in this world. But what to trust?
i wouldnt charge anyone to view the dvd, im simply just interested in how Samoan people live their lives in other countries compared to here in NZ...esp the youth and how heavily influenced they are by western society. im studying my degree in Social Practice and my main focus is to be out there helpin my Samoan people in the community. its ok tho... i can just watch it once u have posted it up on Youtube...appreciate the offer tho :-)...thanks
well, thats easy..samoans in america are americanized..they have 3 main samoan gangs..but there are many sets all over the US..biggest of them in LA, Seatle, texas, and utah..they have organizations too though jus like u guys in NZ...like youth stuff and samoan community stuff and church stuff..same in samoa..although samoa is not so urbanized..but they have turf gangs too..and school rivalries..every year samoana and leone high school fight each year resulting in at least one death each year..
oh hey, thanks for replyin back to my comment... appreciate it alot!! it was good to check my emails and see there was a response to wot i had said...thanks again! :-)
oh no problem... if u sell the dvd.. i will pay using paypal since i live in New Zealand... id really like to have a dvd copy of this to add to my dvd collection of samoan true stories/documentaries... do you have a personal email or another form of contact?
