My thoughts: purchasing ANY animal illegally, or attempting to keep ANY large carnivore in an apartment, is just plain idiotic. From what I know of this story, Bryan eventually gave Jake to a sanctuary via an amnesty program (I commend the lawmakers involved. Undoubtedly many animals have been saved because otherwise irresponsible owners were able to do the right thing, instead of holding onto, releasing, or killing their animals out of fear of the law.
However, while Bryan made many extremely poor decisions, given that he seems to still have a good relationship with Jake he must have done something right.
I would also take anything said on Fatal Attractions with a grain of salt. While I haven't seen the show myself, it seems that nearly every responsible exotic animal owner has criticized it for sensationalism and demonizing even the people who know what they're doing.
Finally, I am repulsed by the commentators' attempts to portray hyenas as evil monsters... all this talk about "deadly carnivores."
Any carnivore the size of a human or larger is easily physically capable of killing a human (the largest domestic dogs included). All carnivores also retain prey instincts, even those which have been domesticated for thousands of years (cats more so than dogs. This does not mean that cats are "less domesticated. Cats are often used as mousers...
...and are expected to remove small prey, while hunting or guard dogs are usually bred to restrain their hunting instincts unless commanded otherwise). But this does NOT mean they are incapable of forming bonds with humans. It just means that such bonds are not foolproof (dogs that attack humans and haven't been abused or neglected are perhaps one in a million. With wild carnivores, this rate may be more like one in a hundred, or even one in ten.)
Spotted hyenas in particular are extremely intelligent and have a strong social hierarchy, although females are more aggressive.
Another interesting thing: Bryan's description of the first two weeks sounds a lot like some parents' accounts of having an infant or toddler in the house. Of course, this is not truly a valid comparison, since many people do even less research before having babies than responsible, intelligent people do before getting pets.
I would love to own one but not that stupid.. If one needed help yes I would pitch in the money to save if I could. But while getting the money I would find a zoo or someone that knows how to look after it an can give it what it needs. I would never bring it home.

That doesn't mean they're saying hyenas are bad animals, but that it's bad to try a keep a pet hyena in your apartment, because they are wild animals, they haven't been bred to be domesticated. The creepy music is just for effect, I doubt that they are trying to make everyone hate hyenas. I personally thought the baby hyena was very cute.
