Oh, yeah! I'm not surprised by the way they killed that snail. A few will sacrifice themselves so that more will come to finish it off. It took a while but in the end they carted off pieces of that snail to feed the nest. On the Science Channel, they stripped a live chicken to the bare bones in one night.
I saw these in Ethiopia, you wouldn't believe how hard they bite onto things, one got trodden on while I was there and it grappled its pincers to the carpet and wouldn't let go-even though someone who was scared of it was stamping on it in fear, they must have stamped on it 20 times and it was still alive and holding on. poor thing.
(I posted a rough English translation in another post). The Driver Ants are actually NOT an Army ant. Army ants # in 1-3 million, spread over the landscape, and have rough-permanent homes. Driver ants # 10 million, have no eyes, and move in organized columns that confuse animals into their ranks by moving in a zig-zag pattern.
The African Driver ants. 0:25, the snail tries to escape by dropping to the African floor, 0:46 but it falls from the frying pan... and into the fire. To defend itself, the slug excretes a mucus around itself. Within seconds, it is covered and it's impossible for them to get to the flesh. 3:00 the ants have a creative way to deal with the slime: by absorbing it with particles of dirt. With the enzymes used up, the ants cut away at the flesh. (rough memory from English version)
@padude64 They kill a Crab by cutting through soft tissue(The Arms)Then the little ants just crawl in...crab be dead in 2 minutes..no1 knows what they do O_O
Siafu are cool... The only insects capable of devouring an human being... They are the real kings of the jungle. PS. It's not disgusting, but just nature at action.

I would have thought all of them would have drowned, suffocated or whatever from being covered in all of that snail slime. lol
hellraiza81 1 year ago
truley ingenuious. They cant penetrate the slime so the ants use dirt to absorb the slime.

They cover the snail in dirt, which absorbs the mucous. Once the outer coating protecting the snail/slug is gone, they attack.
Kijiro 3 years ago 2
ummm... snails have shells, that's a slug. Close though, they're both mollusks.
