In Christopher Awdry's book, "Henry Sees Red," Henry was sent to the works to be mended. He was repainted. He was given a red undercoat, before being painted normally green with red stripes. But while they were finshing up his undercoat, Henry was called out to take the express for an unknown diesel which failed. He had a hard time getting over the hill, but when he came home, no one teased him.

Actually, on wickepedia it says red henry crash, go totally destroyed, rebuilt and re painted. But his memory survived the crash

He must've read it wrong. Henry did crash when he was pulling the flying kipper and was rebuilt into a new engine, since Henry was originally designed poorly. He was never red in that, though.
