He's not. Watch more interviews. He's the same awkward dude with nothing to say. Maybe he gets nervous without a script.

Now, if any recall the crazy (and somehow controversial) episode with Crispin Glover where he definitely brought into question his sanity or whether he was under the influence of drugs, then somehow there's a similarity here. However, these two iconic actors can pull off such seemingly awkward pauses and dream-like disconnection and still manage to be great. They can't help but seem like they mean everything they do. They could pull it off with only a handful of words throughout.
