I think this song can be interpreted as optimistic---it says it's the end of the world as we know it (and we all know how bad this would can get-cruelty, poverty, natural disasters, we don't get much of a break here). The narrator feels fine, perhaps because he believes the future human experience will be better than it is "as we know it" now, and our future won't be about struggle and survival, but about celebration and peaceful co-existence. At least that's my hope.
