I love how when I first met Methos, he comes off as just a guy with headphones and beer, then he says "You cannot help me highlander." and I could almost feel the 5,000 immortal buzz myself. Peter Wingfield is awesome!!
Methos is one of the BEST characters ever written in fantasy...or any genre for that matter. The writers may have intended to kill him at the end of the episode, but I'm so glad they didn't. They saw the possibilities in his 5000+ year life and went with it.
He would have been amazing in his own show. The flashbacks are always so much fun to me!
They fucked up in terms of powers. Yeah Methos should have been able to do some mystical shit. He was older than Kane and Kell. They messed up on being consistent between the movie and the series badly. I am a fan, but why be so lazy with it.
@roresh Yeah he stays low and is very aggressive. Throughout the series he was one of the only guys who kept Mac on defense for long periods of time. Watch most of their fights and see Duncan running,or back pedaling a lot verse Kalas.
@bobbygoo9 Not in the flash backs he does not. Watch the flash backs Mac almost loses his head in the opera house when he cuts Kalas throat. In the final fight and when Kalas had thought Mac to Methos head Kalas was backing up more. I am talking all the past fights and in both Opera house fights Mac was running. He had to fall from the balcony to survive one situation too.
@roresh Yeah he stays low and is very aggressive. Throughout the series he was one of the only guys who kept Mac on defense for long periods of time. Watch most of their fights and see Duncan running,or back pedaling a lot versus Kalas.
Oh, man i was looking at Google Earth and found out that the Shakespeare and Company bookstore it real. Originally established in 1919 by Sylvia Beach, in the 1920s the store was a gathering place for writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, and Ford Madox Ford. Shakespeare and Company serves as both a bookstore and a reading library, specializing in English-language literature. Cool.
Have you noticed how the sound of Duncan "sensing" other immortals is diffrent for each immortal? Like Methos is a deep mystical sound and Richie is a higher pitched rattly rain stick sound.
I was playing around with photobucket tonight and looked up photos of the major actors on highlander. It seems Methos is not just my favorite Immortal, I was stunned to find nearly 600 photos tagged "Methos".
Now the photos are not all of Peter Wingfield. It seems people have been naming their dogs, cats, snakes and children Methos. I wonder what their parents were thinking when they decided to name the kids after "DEATH".
While I would also like to see a Methos series, I think part of the reason why Methos was so popular, is because he was so mysterious / underused. Eventually, as time went on, and more information was revealed (albeit slowly), it just added to the intrigue(?) charm of the character. I guess it's like the old saying, "less means more?"
this plot has more holes then swiss cheese. An immortal gets his neck cut by glass and it didn't heal? yet they get impaled ans shot a million times and heal perfectly. Methos says live another day and grow stronger yet hes been around 5K plus years and can't beat some random immortal? whats the point of this quickening power if any random immortal can be better then you lol. I love the show show been watching it for like 20 hours straight so far
@CranberryMuffinmanz You ever see the first Highlander movie? When the Kurgan got his throat cut but Ramirez, it didn't heal even after about 500 years. It seems to be a stipulation that immortals can heal from practically any wound except for one dealt to the head or neck area (in the movie Search for Vengeance Colin MacLeod has a scar on his face that never heals). And I say "practically" any wound because Xavier St. Cloud didn't grow his hand back. Lame? Sure. But there IS precedent.
@CranberryMuffinmanz Furthermore, Kalas is no random immortal. Who knows HOW many heads he took outside that monastery? And Methos has always been more concerned with staying alive than winning the Game. It isn't about age so much as it is about power and skill. And more importantly, it's about the will and the desire. Power and skill Methos has but, as he himself admits, he just doesn't want it badly enough.
@BrianFoxVideo lol Xavier got owned your right. I guess Neck and head wounds especially with a sword channels power or something that prevents regeneration. Makes sense - good post
In 5000 years, Methos chooses a plain broadsword as a weapon? Kinda boring. My only gripe throughout this whole series was some of the shoddy swordsmanship. This was back before they hired decent martial artists to act. *sigh*
It always bothered me how apparently weak Methos is.
Even is he hasn't fought for 200 years, in over 5,000 years he'd still have fought and beaten more immortals than anyone else, gaining much skill which along with his travels and learnings would make him virtually unbeatable.
@Vebinz I agree, if anything he'd be out of practice but he wouldn't have become incompetent in a fight like he seemingly is in too many of these episodes.
@Vebinz Yes that's my biggest beef with the series too. I remember in the third highlander movie the socerer, kell or kane , had some crazy powers and he was only like 2000 or 3000 years old. Methos should have some crazy shit too.

@Vebinz We don't know how much fighting he did.... He claimed to not have fought for the last 200 years but as anyone who knows anything about Methos knows... he's not always trustworthy. They did a fine job with the flashbacks during Highlander..... Don't see why they couldn't have done a Methos spin off. If you visit BC you wouldn't necessarily need much in the way of sets. They could have had reoccuring bad guys similar to Kalas, Xavier St. Cleod. etc They're kicking themselves now i bet.
@Vebinz The show could also have been more about him working as a watcher trying to stay incognito, spying on other immortals and strategizing with his watcher information he has on them while having the occasional close call being found out as an immortal by the watchers, a narrow escape or brutal fight once in a while. @Vebinz No matter how good you are you can still slip or make a mistake. Besides skills are perishable if you don't use them. LIke he says in the clip he hadn't faced anyone for 200 years. Methos liked to hide more than he liked to fight. That's why he's made it this long.

I really like Methos and this episode is quite good but it also suffers immensely from the totally illogical plot.
let's see: I am the ~800 years old Kalas and I think I can't beat Duncan, who's only 400. What do I do? Right, all I have to do is kill the legendary 5000(!) years
old mythical Methos, who I'm not even sure exists. And after he is dead, which will be NO problem at all, I am strong enough to take Duncan.
@PsychoWedge It`s not just about age. Methos rarely fougth other immortals thus recieved less quickenings than the combative duncan. He killed lots of older guys in just 2 seasons the methos in the last millenium.
We know that. After the epsiode... ;) Kalas didn't know that at the beginning when he started his masterplan and nobody was even sure Methos was for real. Also, saying that in all his 5000 years Methos rarely fought is presoumptious (he was one of the horseman after all). He himself talked about the fire of youth that he now lacks to win.. Which means he once had it. And therefore he himself (and the creators of the show as well) confirms it is not just about the quickenings.
If Methos is supposed to be so powerful then why does Kalas think he can beat him? As much as I love the show the 'hinting at power' but not showing it is frustrating. They keep acting as if age is a major factor but then guys like Darius get taken out by mortals. Guys his age should be shrugging off bullets and laughing at tasers; and now Methos is hiding behind a guy thousands of years younger than him--it just doesn't make sense. Where is this power they keep talking about?
I don't think it's the sort of power that you're thinking of. I *think* that the power they're talking about it the strength of the Quickening of the Immortal involved.
-SPOILER-
Methos hasn't really fought in 200 years so he hides behind McLeod, if Kalas took his Quickening, he'd have all his experience/knowledge,and Darius was a pacifist.
@Backfromthedeadguy the power is in the AMOUNT of quickenings AND the "power" of the individual that is beheaded. Duncan has killed in double digits by the end of season ONE. How many did he slay before that? probably more than Methos, despite his longevity.
As far as this "power" goes, subtle evidence such as duncan's moonlight sonata on the piano when he claimed that he didn't know how to play is all i found. I agree, they should have been protrayed as physically superhuman or something.
@justletmeinassholes Methos dips out whenever things get to be too much so he doesnt fight too much but i think due to his age he probably stands toe to toe with Duncan on beheadings, but he just doesnt care anymore he doesnt want to fight just live.
@justletmeinassholes Is it possible that an immortal only gains real access to all that power and knowledge once he/she is the last one? And that until then, it's all there somewhere and some of it is available and some of it leaks through (like in the dark quickenings or the psychic stuff) but it's mainly subconscious, so that Duncan could play the piano while his mind was really not on it - i.e. he was in a kind of day-dream state or really thinking of other things at the time...
@Backfromthedeadguy ...and then when he 'snapped out of it' (the day-dream state) and realised he'd been playing the piano, he denied that he could - to cover up of course, and forestall any more questions or even requests for more, because in his/her fully conscious state, an immortal just doesn't have access to all that knowledge - yet. That would be a neat way of tidying up and explaining away all those glitches the screenplay writers and producers made through inconsistency and tardiness...
@Backfromthedeadguy And they're welcome to use it if they ever re-vamp the series. (Anything to improve one of my fav series : ) - and anything for the Highlander : )) I also have other great 'solutions' and explanations as to the immortals' origins if anyone's interested, but they'll have to contact me for those. I think my theory could pretty much solve many of the inconsistencies that have been allowed to crop up in time in this franchise.
@Backfromthedeadguy But I shouldn't boast too soon, I suppose. Actually, I should probably watch Endgame and The Source to make sure, but from what I've read in the movie summaries it might not be a hopeless case after all... Don't get me wrong, though. I really love Highlander: the idea and the first movie and particularly Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLoud. I don't think anyone else could have imbued the character with such heart-winning qualities.
@Backfromthedeadguy I think it was a lot of his character shining through that did the trick :). I'm just sorry they didn't take more care with the whole franchise. It was good - and actually great at frequent intervals - but it could have been even greater with a bit more care.
Methos was such brilliant casting. When I first watched this episode, I would have guessed the oldest immortal was some mid-50's guy with a long beard in robes living in a monastery. Making him a young, average looking guy who drinks beer and listens to music was a great way to introduce him. He didn't survive that long being a good fighter, but being very cunning.
Akkatlah, you're question is easy to answer. How was Kalas able to find out so easily about the existence of the Watchers.? Well, immortals generally accepted that mortals didn't know they expected, especially the villains like Kalas, but then Horton and other mortals killed at least four immortals, including Darius, and Xavier hired mortal mercenaries to help him kill. As a result, immortals like Kalas would naturally be more aware of mortals. What they overlooked once they'd see.
It always bothered me how Kalas was able to find out so easily the existence of the Watchers. How in the hell did they manage to hide the existence of the organization for that long?
I love how when I first met Methos, he comes off as just a guy with headphones and beer, then he says "You cannot help me highlander." and I could almost feel the 5,000 immortal buzz myself. Peter Wingfield is awesome!!

The kurgan was said to be the oldest by Ramirez. AKA Ramirez didn't know about any older ones.

One of the best Highlander villains! I really just enjoyed hating him. Kalas was a great 3 dimensional antagonist!

It always bothered me how Kalas was able to find out so easily the existence of the Watchers. How in the hell did they manage to hide the existence of the organization for that long?

All right! Methos is the man.
