@chairnobill Delighted! Yes the bass counterpoint part was particularly fun, actually I just tried to adapt in best way on piano the original Alan's concept which doubles tre track delayed on one stereo channel respect the other. Thanx again, as you may have noticed there are more APP piano adaption on my channel
@Doommaster1994 Thanx. Yes, Yamaha CS10 (I don't have one) was used (possibly for the intro pad?). The other keyboards/synth used on track were: EMS Synthi A with sequencer (a portable version of the VCS3, used by Pink Floyd in DSOTM) for at least one of the loops; Projectron (an evolution of Mellotron, hence a sort of analog sampler) possibly for the xilophone-like lead; and overall the Clavinet (electric clavichord) which performs the main theme.
@urbania70 Oh cool. So it was a Clavinet that was used for the main part? I had no idea. I didn't know what a Projectron was either (I know what a Mellotron is though). Thanks for the reply though. I learned this song by ear but I'd have to say you're probably the best player of the song.
@Doommaster1994 Indeed the Clavinet.. I mean the theme at 2.05. It was played by Eric, the CS10 by Duncan Mackay and the other two keybs by Alan. Most of these info were revelaed on the recent expanded edition which I suggest, others were revealed on the fan club The Avenue years ago. The Project work was huge. Thanx again.
@Doommaster1994 I added you and saw your proflie.. wow but you're 16y old? (and own a C64 LOL) It's always great to see the APP appreciation passed on to the young generation
@urbania70 Yup, though everyone thinks I'm older because I look and sound like it. My mom used to play this album but mostly Turn of a Friendly Card. I later bought the record for this for only $2. I learned a few songs from ToaFC by ear.
@Doommaster1994 PS 2:05 refers to my video. And about the Projectron.. as you can guess it was devised specifically for the Project, and used only by them. The difference respect the Mellotron was that, instead of tapes which rewinded after each key release limiting the sounds to 8 seconds, there were tape loops. This allowed long notes, in fact the main use (not in this song) was for pads (as "ooh" 's) very much like the digital samplers did later. Sadly there's no trace of the Projectron.
@Doommaster1994 No, as I wrote above, there's no trace of it. Alan told it in some interview.
Another great invention devised for APP album was one of the 1st vocoders, devised by EMI (I will send you the song in which it was featured).
Interestingly about the C64, Ian B (the APP guitarist), in the interview published on a side project very similar to an APP album, revealed that they had often long waits in the studio for technical reasons, so they set up a C64 and had fun with it.
love this song. nice job on the piano. the two repeating motif's still boggle my brain when i try to play them. parsons is great. check out my tribute song i composed in my channel. i'd love to hear what people think of it ("Parsons and I") :-) You will hear some related parsons elements in there. :)
@luisdent I approve happily your video response. A very good tribute, not only of high quality but (which is very rare) with real references to the Project.
@traiphumi Many thanx, and again compliments for your amazing Rubik-like puzzles. Please note this is a modest piano adaption, check the original by the Alan Parsons Project
@ajbena Many thanx.. it's the 1st time somene uses the word "intelligent" on one of my piano videos, much appreciated.. and appropriated since the theme here... Artifically-intelligently... #LOL
great album...great musical themes.....probably not discovered by many......glad you could interpret.......how about " somewhere some other place some other time "
@charlieg1337 Hello again.. I Robot had success already when it came out in 1977. I did a cover of "Some other time" with friends, I'll send you the link.
@takman59 Difficult to say... I know APP music since 25 years, but I never stop to discover details in it... there's always a new instrument, or a chord variation I didn't notice... For the making of the video itself see its description by clicking under it.
@woubie Thank you, this is just a cover. I'll send you the original. It uses among various instruments a clavinet, which is sort of electric amplified harpsichord (which, I see, you use in your videos)
Ancora, bravo..
PS correzioni ortografiche: Alan Parsons, Sirius, Eye in the Sky
I've read Asimov's Foundation Trilogy and also I Robot, and your piano cover is absolutely stunning:) I remember buying the Alan Parsons Album back in the 70s! Warm Wishes - Transgender Musician - DeniseX
Thanks. Welcome in the world of the Alan Parsons Project. This 70s/80s English prog rock "band" did 10 concept albums featuring hundreds of musicians. Eric Woolfson, the songwriter, passed away last December but his music is immortal.
Hi, I don't know if you know that Eric passed away 2 days ago. See my channel for info
This video had not been done as a tribute to Eric (dedication is to others). Sure I quote it, however the instrumentals were for majority work of Alan.
Me he suscrito a tu blog y te he enviado una solicitud de amistad.
That is some masterful piano playing right there! "I Robot" is a complex piece, and I wouldn't have thought it could be done in solo piano; but, buddy, you NAIL it perfectly! Are you in the APP tribute band? If not, you ought to be.
Also, the intro segment is very cool and informative. I didn't know Alan Parsons approached Asimov about the album ... my first APP album, BTW, after which I was hopelessly hooked. Favorite track: "Breakdown"
Thanx Davy.. Yes I had fun "zipping" lots of tracks in the solo piano.
There are various APP tribute bands. In Nevermore project (to which I dedicated the video) I (and Alec) played as guest. In Italy there's also an amateur small formation called Genialgroup including Alec and me (see his channel). I saw two shows of the professional German tribute band. Other bands are or were active. I just did a playlist of all APP tribute bands, and I put a direct link on my channel's homepage.
As for the Asimov-APP connection (actually it was Eric which spoke with Asimov), I too discovered the info recently.. it has been revealed by Eric about 2 years ago on the official APP website (link on my channel homepage again) which has been launched for the publishing of the APP catalog in expanded remastered editions.
I wrote this in the description ("more info"), anyway some more detail. I use a condenser mic with phantom power supply (about $100 in total) at 20cm about the piano's top. I feed it into a small mixer where I do some eq (cutting lows to reduce the bad reverberation by the wall, and, in this case, enhancing a bit highs to make the piano sound more suitable for rock). All this is relative, for you it may be different, the trick to get the best is, as always, doing lots of testing.
PS also important is the volume, which I adjust on the mixer. This defintely needs testing. For such a mic the noise is negligible, but you anyway want the highest possible volume in the video file. So I select the maximum volume which doesn't give distortion when i watch the video, putting some reserve for safety.
haha neanche io avevo capito XD comunque grazie!
Era in offerta a circa 70 Euro, se no costerò entro i 100.
It's the rhythmic complexity that got me first intrigued in this instrumental. Congrats on faithful and creative conceptualizing of this electronic music wonder!
Thanx.. you may wish to check a little interesting discussion about rhythmic in this piece in some recent comments to my video (look for a user whose name begins by "ACDC")
This is the song and album that got me into APP! When others were playing rock and roll loud out of their cars ...we were playing this album and all the other APP music loud instead! My parents were amazed about how talented APP was. My dad was Big Bad Jazz music and soon after so was I at 18. APP has always been big part of my music taste. Wonderful playing and right on target!
As a realy big APP fan; whenever I listen to this song, I never could imagine to hear all this different intstruments and rythm on just ONE instrument / piano.
YOU made it happen. I´ve played piano for many years when I was younger but you´re awesome.
Ever thought about covering ELO´s "21 cent man" or "2095" also kind of concept.
Thank you very much! You got the point! In much APP music, the arrangement must be considered as part of the composition, so when I adapt it on piano I try to reproduce the most possible parts which, in the original, were played by different kinds of instruments. In this cover there's probably over a dozen (although a maximum of 3 is played simultaneously). Really big APP fan? Try the Robot game! PS sorry, not expert about (great) ELO music
Gratzi, Giorgio!! Hello from the US. This YouTube is wonderful! All these years and I thought I was the only person to work out every APP song from every album for piano, including all parts + vocals! LOL Your performance is extraordinary! I love your added phrases from other tunes (I won't spoil it!).
I play a true rendition of "If I could change your mind". I wish I could find the right female vocal. "Turn of a Friendly Card" is a fun album to master as well.
Thank you and welcome aboard in the APP community on YouTube! Back in 80s we all fans thought we were alone, internet changed things. And now with YT we can share APP covers. There's lot of people covering APP on YT, although of course it's difficult music so only a small percentage do good covers, but there are various, and the rate is growing. Yes, TTOAFC is all fun to play on piano. And, if you catched the quotations in this video, try the robot game! 6 fans already got all quotations right!
Thanx, if you refer to the part just after the animation ends, i don't know if you know the original version, it's funny because there the second voice in delay with the first one is realized by magnetic tapes. It plays in stereo there, I did it with two different hands ;-)
most people would have never noticed that. the stereo part always caught my attention in the actual song because the rhythm of it is so awkward. When only the synthesizers are playing, it sounds like the down-beat is a 16th note ahead of what it actually is. excellent job, you did eric woolfson complete justice! Definitely 5 stars!
Thanx, welcome and well put! This part shows that without drums you have no reference about where the beat is - which works well in this case, since the melody is cyclical and without accents (it was made by one of the first sequencers), and enters in fade.
You can even rewind to the part featuring one synthbass track only, and interpret it with the beat either here or there.. or even in different ways... which demonstrates how much, in rock, the listener is actively involved in the rhythm.
From an interview to Alan which I just discovered, about the I Robot synth bass sequence: "This was an EMS Synthi AKS. I programmed it using the onboard sequencer. Because all the notes in the sequencer are at the same intensity, the downbeat could be anywhere in the sequence, and is only defined to the listener by the entry of the drums. Ambiguous downbeats were something of a trademark of mine!"
Excellent transcription. Melody and harmony translated almost perfectly. I would not mind if you played this on my own funeral.

Also, the intro segment is very cool and informative. I didn't know Alan Parsons approached Asimov about the album ... my first APP album, BTW, after which I was hopelessly hooked. Favorite track: "Breakdown"
Anyway, kudos x 10^10! A really impressive job!

As for the Asimov-APP connection (actually it was Eric which spoke with Asimov), I too discovered the info recently.. it has been revealed by Eric about 2 years ago on the official APP website (link on my channel homepage again) which has been launched for the publishing of the APP catalog in expanded remastered editions.

can you please tell me the way you recorded your piano? thanks!

All this is relative, for you it may be different, the trick to get the best is, as always, doing lots of testing.
urbania70 2 years ago
PS also important is the volume, which I adjust on the mixer. This defintely needs testing. For such a mic the noise is negligible, but you anyway want the highest possible volume in the video file. So I select the maximum volume which doesn't give distortion when i watch the video, putting some reserve for safety.

No no aspetta.. sei Italiano? HAHAHAHA! E io che ti ho risposto in Inglese! :-)

haha neanche io avevo capito XD comunque grazie!

Era in offerta a circa 70 Euro, se no costerò entro i 100.
urbania70 2 years ago
Ciao!
urbania70 2 years ago

PS
Corrige.. la marca del mic è Proel

A prog fan of all sorts, but I enjoy sci-fi as well.

5erharry 2 years ago

I am a new subscriber! Thanks!

It plays in stereo there, I did it with two different hands ;-)
urbania70 2 years ago
most people would have never noticed that. the stereo part always caught my attention in the actual song because the rhythm of it is so awkward. When only the synthesizers are playing, it sounds like the down-beat is a 16th note ahead of what it actually is. excellent job, you did eric woolfson complete justice! Definitely 5 stars!
ACDC7369 2 years ago
Thanx, welcome and well put! This part shows that without drums you have no reference about where the beat is - which works well in this case, since the melody is cyclical and without accents (it was made by one of the first sequencers), and enters in fade.
You can even rewind to the part featuring one synthbass track only, and interpret it with the beat either here or there.. or even in different ways... which demonstrates how much, in rock, the listener is actively involved in the rhythm.
urbania70 2 years ago
From an interview to Alan which I just discovered, about the I Robot synth bass sequence: "This was an EMS Synthi AKS. I programmed it using the onboard sequencer. Because all the notes in the sequencer are at the same intensity, the downbeat could be anywhere in the sequence, and is only defined to the listener by the entry of the drums. Ambiguous downbeats were something of a trademark of mine!"
