  • This video makes me wish i had a big cage, and a bigger stick.....

  • The bubonic plague came from my beautiful niece and not a diseased rat.

  • He is really cute.

  • I hate rats

  • WHAT DID YOU DO WITH HIM?

  • don't misunderstand me im not saying catch wiled rats and keep them as pets. even sick rats can live long enough to cause issues. and if your naberhood rats are infected they can couse mass amounts of damage to property and helth issues. a solo rat probably isnt going to be much of a risk but even there wast in larg amounts can be a health risk. if you capture a wiled rat relocate 0or destory. the vet part was for those deturmend to keep one.

  • if your determend to keep one you will need to find a exotic vet they play by different rules then a everyday.

  • Vets will not accept wild rats into there office...if they do, I would never take my pet there. Too much of a risk of infection for other animals. Give them a call...you will see

  • your thinking of a domistic vet not a exotic.

  • domestics dont take any kind of exotic pet like skunks bobcats etc. thers a different group of vets for these types.

  • exotics know hoe to deal with a pet that's not domstic. even wiled rats. of course they keep it away from any other pets and use a hazed cage untill the rat eyther passes test or has to be destoryed.

  • keep forgetting shit. i had a bobcat once so i learned of the entire different group of vets out there.of course no normal vet even knew how to deal with a bobcat i had to find one that delt with exotic animals/

  • yes, that is true unless they have training in that species and of course.... insurance

  • i have a aunt who does exotic work. i can tell some of the strange things people bring in.. raccoons skunks wiled rabbits bobcats. and rodents of all types even a old grey field mouse once. will admit i never saw a rat but relly how many people would be crazy enough to whant a wiled one.

  • @luther349 In captivity (getting from a breeder is suggested), skunks are animals with a ferret mentality, except they are much larger. The only reason skunks are outlawed in certain states is because the federal government suggests that, depending on the state, they cause "health risks". Yet, look at humans. They carry diseases, wherever you walk. It's quite ironic, actually.

  • no I'm saying both....exotic vet is a regular vet with exotic training only in certian species.

  • exotic vet ( as you call them ) will not take wild rodents ( roof rat or norway rats) because of the diseases they carry. Or at least a vet who knows what they are doing. An exotic vet is still a vet. If you don't believe me, call one and tell them your bringing in a wild norway rat and see what they say.....

  • This rat looks very healthy. A sick rat would look weak and have diarhea. Exterminators create fear in people about rats in order to sell their products. The plague was caused by the fleas, and horses and dogs carried those fleas as well, and it continued so long because no one wanted to get rid of the horses because they were too expensive. Lots of healthy rats are being killed for no reason.

  • @TheYellowtulip I wish you wake up one day with half of your face already eaten by your pet rats.

  • @MrTaipan55 Go play some playstation games instead of wasting time on youtube posting silly comments.

  • I agree with you except, that one sick rat can still cause a cascade of problems that can infect numerous numbers of animals and people. Most vets will throw you out of the office in a polite way !!! lol

  • @luther349 the problem is that a single rat can still cause lots of health problems

  • rats do carry alot of things but most don't effect humans. the stuff that does the rat normally dies. from but the risk isn't much grater then owning a domestic rat. as for rabies very few rats actually have rabies they also die from it. of course a wiled rat is not a pet and even if the risk is small they can still carry something bad. if you do wanna keep wiled rat take it to the nerest vet to make sure hes not dangers to keep. people fear of them lead to alot of lies abought them.

  • Yes thats a good point, but all mammal that get rabies will die without treatment.Rodents are living longer with diseases more than usual in wild or feral rats.A vet will not take in wild rats due to the cross contamination to affect other animals, they are asked but the health department to put them down asap.Fancy rats or the common per rat is a different story, they are raised without diseases and are fine.

  • Besides, the risk of owning a domestic rat is very low, about the same as owning a house cat, unless it had a pre existing condition before entering the house, I doubt you will have any problem. Now if the rat is allowed to go outside.....that is another story

  • @TheYellowtulip I agree with you 100%. Rats are not the "monsters". WE ARE. We are the idiots who made them monsters, by making them invasive species; along with every other invasive species, on the planet. We are the ultimate negative entity on this planet. And also, I have a pet rat named Millie. Although she’s not wild, she does illustrate a brighter side to rats, and portraying rats as not being vicious animals, if they are raised by humans, who give them proper care and attention.

  • You sir are very ignorant, YES you can get rabies from a Rat or any Rodent, It is not rubbish but fact and you need to stop reading children stories and fake blogs on the internet from people who have false information. Now Rats did cause the plague and can still do today, If you ant to blame fleas go right ahead, Rats still carry and transmit the diease any intelligent and informed person knows that !!!!

  • Humans DO NOT carry more diseases than any rodent species, and for your information I DO get paid to know this information and very well I might add. Perhaps you should get real information from Web Sites with real information, The CDC, USDA and your local health department.

  • does the Hanta Virus 1993-95 ring a bell anyone?

  • my home has been invaded by these rats, how they got into the attic is a mystery but I am paying big money to get them out, I love animals and hate to harm anything but the rats in my house are getting killed.

  • its sad but true, Rats are not only destructive, they carry many diseases, once you get them out make sure the area they were infesting is cleaned and sanitized.

  • ...uh why the hell do you have a SEWER RAT as a "pet"? seriously either end his misery, or release him/her in the wild and let it go free. Seriously wtf is wrong with you?

  • "Oh, oh, I know this is true because my mommie said so." Grow up a bit, live a bit, do your own research, compile your own data, then talk about something. At some point, somebody's mother told them the world was flat, that Santa Klaus exists, missing teeth are taken by the tooth fairy and that stepping on a crack wil break their back. If you are a child, I suggest you be careful when joining grown folks' conversations.

  • Its a shame people spew off at the mouth and have no idea what they are talking about, these are the people who put themselves in situations where they get hurt or exposed. If they only knew what went on outside their front door....it would scare them !

  • Ain't that the truth, man? Reminds me of all those people who have jumped on the "no vaccination" band wagon recently. They refuse to vaccinate their kids against measles, mumps and rubella as wel as chicken pox. These are the same people who would scream bloody murder when their kid gets sick and nearly dies or actually does die and blame everyone but themselves and their stupidity.

  • Thats ok...more oxygen for us !!!!!

  • 'Mommie' has 20 years experience, several degrees and 10 years handling rodents (including rats) in the field, plus 5 years animal control orgs live capture and release. I catch and handle most rodents (esp all rat species) by hand, have never been bitten and certainly have never caught anything. i think you will find that there were actually no rats in Iceland at the time of that plague yet 2 thirds of the population died from it so the evidence clearly shows that rats were not a cause...

  • first of all if you are catching rodents and releasing them in the US I would love to have your personal infomation to pass along to certian folks that I know. You are very ignorant and are lying if you are catching and releasing rodents in the city or anywhere else. You are also very ignorat in handling wild rodent and not protecting yourself from exposure,

  • I am sure in a matter of time you will come down with one or more of the many dieases that rodents carry if you havent already. I recommend getting a new re-education and a trip to the doctors for some blood work

  • Did you set the poor thing free? It is a wild creature belonging to a group. Rats in the wild live in large groups. It is prob very very scared. Be nice!

  • Hi woodgirl, Im sorry to say it was not released, wild rats and mice are required to be destroyed on site because of the diseases they carry and transmit. NJ right now has one of the highest Rabies rate in the country, not to mention the other problems with feral animals leading to contamination, but I did give it a last meal.....

  • ;/you are obviously not very well educated in diseases. rats don't carry rabies. there are no known diseases spread by rats, weil's disease comes from dirty water NOT animals of any kind. murine typhus is spread by fleas, but rats can die from fleas so they keep themselves flea free for survival. and there are generally no other diseases which are blamed on rats. pest control companies lie about rats having diseases so that you buy thier products. you murdered a rat for nothing.

  • My dear you obviously do not know what your taking about and need to get your information straight.I work very closely with a research lab and the health department....you need to do more research before say things you know nothing about, I'm sorry but you are wrong and its a shame because it people like you, with your lack of knowledge, that leads to the large amount of mis-information. I don't know where you get your info from but it is wrong.

  • Rats in the wild can live there entire life ( approx 13 months) in the wild carring diseases AND transmitting them... The Bubonic plauge,The hanta virus ( the 1993-95 outbreak in the mid west)Murine typhus, Rickettsial pox, Samonella bacteria, Rat bite fever and leptospirosis, and many others...these are some of the reasons why they must be put down.If it wasn't for the pest control companies doing what most cannot do, we would all be in a bad position of health

  • and YES they also carry Rabies if infected....much like raccons and ground hogs. Right now NJ has the highest rabies infection rate. Feral cats will be there soon.

  • My wild pet rat has lived for 2 yrs and 3 months now and is tame and loving. What you are saying is that all rats should be killed assuming that they are all sick? Its like saying lets blame the innocent as well and put them in jail also.

  • All of these diseases existed because of poor human sanitation , not because of rodents. Even mumps , measels and childhood diseases existed because of bad sanitation and bad nutrition.

  • This is a lie created by companies who want to create fear in order to sell their products. Of course they will not tell you that rats only live for a few weeks then you will not buy their products to kill the rats. It is simple common sense.

  • nope its you who is missinformed, i get my info directly from my mother who is a scientist. saying that you are right doesn't make it so, wheres your evidence that rats carry diseases? which diseases? how many people have died from those diseases? if you are calling me a liar prove me wrong.

  • First of all your Mother is mis-informed, just because she is a scientist ( in what?) dosen't mean she has the correct information, and I am not saying I am right, I am just giving you the proper information. If you choose to not believe me, that's fine. as far as evidence most Health departments can provide you with all the correct information and Pest control companies also do research on the subject.

  • That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read! Rats carry lots of diseases in their feces, in the fleas that infest them and in their cells. Study some history. See Plague of Justinian, and the Black Death to name the most famous cases. These creatures should be destroyed on sight when found in people's houses or in buildings used by humans. When something they carry afects a human population, history teaches that the death tolls are in the MILLIONS, not hundreds, not thousands, MILLIONS.

  • Rat do live "near" each other to make it appear as a large group, but once they are weaned they live alone except when mating

  • if you'd like to make a pet of him, look up trust training; it really works! and a bigger cage w/ some toys would be nice. we found one on craigslist for $35. huts and toys are cheap at walmart, and old clothes/rags make great hammocks. hang w/ paper clips. good luck!

  • Can your pet vermin play with my 4ft mangrove monitor lizard. She loves pet vermin. My burmese python likes rabbits. When she was smaller I fed her rats also.

  • boasting about killing animals, owning a reptile to attempt to look hard, you have obviously got a small penis and an inferiority complex. what a dickhead.

btw reptiles migrate for thousands of miles and hate bing cooped up in an enclosure, not to mention the fact that they only live half the lifespan in captivity that they would in the wild.reptiles are not social so they dont form relationships. reptiles should not be pets.and dicks like you should not be alowed pets anyway

  • rats bring all kinds of plagues to mankind and your country was almost wiped out by these vermin and to top it of your people brought them here to my land and they destroy millions of tons of HUMAN food. I have had fang for 22 years and that is 12 years longer than in the wild. If you think I have a small dick just ask your mom.

  • I dont think you want a dirty dieased rodent playing with your pet

  • The only good vermin is DEAD vermin.

These fucking things should be exterminated and the remains burned. The only thing they are useful for is target practice and feeding my 16 ft python and monitor lizard.

  • Norway, thanks for your legacy

  • I had hundreds of these guys at my home in Washington State ..............and they are 'HUGE'.... I did manage to get ride of them though .............you just have to cut off their food supply.

  • Kill on site is a good policy. Rats carry many deadly diseases. Reminder the Black Plaque? Ring around the Rosie's, pocket full of Poesy's? Many nasty germs that killed people are carried by rats. These are the most vicious and dangerous, Norway Wharf Rats.

  • Vicious? Utter nonsense.

  • Have to agree except for one aspect, test subject rats, Haven't personally seen them but heard some testee's are quite vicious, but then again, can't blame them.

  • Yes, they can become very vicious. Theres a great book on the subject called "Rats " its the research this fella did on rats in NY city for years.

  • Robert Sullivan spent 1 year observing and researching rats in New York city. Sullivan goes through a few common misunderstandings about rats, and them being vicious is one of them. Overall, I found the book to be more about humans and the social history of New York than about rats themselves. But I really enjoyed it none the less.

  • rats are not vicious, I have cared for, caught, and released thousands of wild rats. they will only bite if cornered and even then they will only nip you to cause a distaction while they run away. you seem to be surprised that this rat tries to defend itself when you trap it and jab him in the face with a stick.

    moron

  • actually rodents have a hierarchy much like dogs and cats, and can become vicious in the right circumstance

  • AbiHey, rats that live wild in a city such as Newark, NJ ARE vicious. They are dangerous and disgusting. Unless you live in a big Northeastern American city, I guess you can't understand.

  • any animal can become defensive and seem vicious at any time it feels in danger

  • Killed on sight? That doesn't seem right to me...don't ALL feral animals carry disease? :(

  • No.... All feral animals do not carry diseases.

  • Neat, sort of a Gitmo for rodents you have there.

  • Actually I like pet rats, the only real difference between them and the wild ones are the fact that they are wild ( feral ) and loaded with diseases. Its too bad it is required to kill them on site.

  • Unless these people live in a big city, they're not going to understand how dangerous, disgusting and disheartening it is to live in a place full of sewer rats. People are confusing their cute and cuddly pet rats with these vile creatures.

  • well your right... people can sometimes be closed minded with out fully understanding the conversation.

  • @RichieD814 This.

"wild" Rats are not sociable, pleasant, polite, creatures.

Wild Rats are cunning and destructive creatures who have teeth as hard as iron who do what they need to survive and are just as dangerous and harmfull as any other wild animal be it a mountain lion, or a mouse.

They carry diseases and parasites from living a hard life and they are in no mood for any of you guyses misplaced sympathy.

  • @gopherdude - Learn to read. I wrote the same thing you did.

  • It's cute. It's a shame they have been given such a bad stigma. A buddy of mine used to have pet rats and says they are very intelligent

  • It's subjective on whether rats/mice are "cute" or not, but due to circumstance, they have EARNED such a negative reputation b/c of the damage they cause (albeit unintentional) inside- chewing wires, thus increasing the chance of fires, as well as causing all other kinds of damage by chewing through pipes, walls, duct work, etc. And, YES, they do carry deadly viruses such as salmonella, hanta virus, fleas, mites, etc.

Lastly, since they breed SO quickly, they need to be exterminated asap.

  • you got that right....

  • its also amazing how many fires in the city the cause from chewing on wires.....

  • @SomaSounds It's kind of ironic how people say the rat population requires control, yet there's only about 1.25xs more rats on the planet than humans. We are the idiots who actually created them to be illustrated as monsters. We spread them throughout the planet and made them the invasive species, yet we are the worst invasive species of all. Both, the black and brown rats were native to Asia, before we ignorantly spread them throughout the world. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have this issue.

  • They haven't been given a bad name, not all animals are bad....Rats are intelligent to a point just like other animals ( but we are not talking about fancy rats or Pet rats ) were are talking about wild rats.

  • WOW what a great idea....ill work on that "NOT" you are very ignorant. If you watch closley Im barley touching it. Open your eyes

  • Aw :'( .

  • I've had rats for ten years and never heard anything about salmonella from them. Indeed six of mine died from catching salmonella themselves, so it's unlikely they can carry it safely. Google has nothing to say on the matter either.

This is a very beautiful animal. She's clearly intelligent, but also in respiratory distress. I'm sad that you caught her, but didn't euthanise her either.

  • Actually according to the CDC ( and the reason why wild rats and mice are required by law to be killed on site asap) because they can carry dieases and live for up to a year or more, does the black plauge ring a bell? also the reason for respiratory distress the causative organism, Streptococcus pneumoniae, is a gram-positive coccus. A number of serological types have been associated with respiratory disease in rats.

  • 'The black plague' is a broad term that covers several diseases. If you are referring to the Bubonic Plague, which many people mistakenly think was carried by rats .. it was the fleas on the rats that spread it.

Tell me, how long did you keep the rat before you euthanised? And please, how was it performed?

  • If your talking about lab results, I cannot reveal them at this time. I can only say that you are confusing "wild rats" with "domestic rats" and you need to do more reasearch instead of taking Googles word for it. Rats and mice with the bubonic plauge and others can live with the diease for a long time.

  • I am not confusing wild rats and domestic rats. Do you perhaps mean that I am confusing rattus with norvegicus? Again I am not. The rat you caught appeared to be norvegicus, though it was a bad quality video so hard to tell. I do not take Googles word for anything. I am an animal biologist; I read the journals. I was referring to what you did with the animal once you had caught it, other than poke it with sticks and feed it peanut butter.

  • So instead of feeding it would you rather I just cut its head off. And if you watch closley you'll see I wasn't really poking it. I was barley touching it.

  • You should do more research before spewing off at the mouth. The Bubonic plauge is not a broad term...look it up.You should stop reading journals and read more on The hanta virus ( the 1993-95 outbreak in the mid west)Murine typhus,Rickettsial pox,Samonella bacteria,Rat bite fever and leptospirosis, these are the reasons why WILD mice and rats are required to be killed on site.I am not talking about domestic pets.If your an animal biologist,

  • fat motha f*cka....u feedin him donuts or something??? gross lol

  • That baby capibara looks pissed

  • Hey, just HOW did you manage to catch that critter. Did you use a net or somn?

  • its master splinter!

  • newark

thats all i have to say

  • dats one huge fuckin rat, i thought mine was big

  • where in newark?

  • Right by the airport.... caught while we were working in the area that day

  • did it come in from Norway off the plane or something? or are "Norway Rats" common in Newark?

  • dang thats like a fricken cat

  • Poor thing....

  • very interesting, but 2 FEET!!! wow, and thanks for your knowledge and info. about the book and diseases.

  • I feel bad for the thing just because I have rats and they are such amazingly natured animals, of course if anything is taken away from its home it is not going to be very happy. The only thing I wonder is how you knew it was a boy. You can't tell extremely well but it didnt look like it had any resticles which made me think it was a girl, and if it was a boy the testicles would be extremely noticable.

  • According to our lab techs they said it was a female....If you really want to understand the problem with wild rats you should get a book called RATS by Robert Sullivan who did extensive research on wild rats in NY... very interesting

  • Most "pets" are amazing I will agree.... but when it comes to wild rats that breed diseases and pose threats of airborne and other viral/bactierial strains, thats a problem.

  • The poor thing.. give it some food and water at least!

  • it had plenty of food and water

  • actually i fed it everything it wanted, before it died, you should have see everything it was eating, quite amazing

  • Perhaps you don't really understand anything about the nature of your statement. If you really knew about what goes on outside your perfect little world that you have created for yourself, you would understand more about

Diseases and the reactions that humans have on the environment.

  • Fuzzysquirrelnutz is a huuuuuuuuge dumbass for that 1. lolololololollllololol

  • Its amazing how much mis-information that is out there on Google...and people take it as fact oh well

  • How stupid some peole are. Salmonella is FOOD POISIONING. That is what you get when you leave your meat on the counter with out putting it in the frig. NOT something you gatch from a rat. Rabies maybe but not Salmonella. Your on a computer, Don't be so stupid.Google It !

  • Actually YOU are STUPID so unless you work in the Lab (research and Development studies or the CDC ) you need to do some research before you open your mouth.....YES you can catch Salmonella from mice and rats. Look it up stupid!

  • Reminds me of my former wife

  • K... I hafta give u credit for a wicked tongue lol

  • I hope it didn't have fleas that jumped off in your house. That's how bubonic plague is spread. By fleas that bit infected rats.

  • Why don't you give him a posion man...

  • I was supposed to send it to Trenton to be tested for Rabies and destroyed... but it didnt make it. It was too sick to send and loaded with disease

  • Are you retarted? All mice and rats in the wild have salmonella. Releasing a wild rat or a wild mouse is against the release laws (health dept and EPA) and besides, you can infect other furry animals that dont deserve to be infected.

  • Why the hell don't you let him go. He's not a pet, but a wild animal. Shame on you!!!!!!!1

  • Once a wild rat is caught, by LAW it is supposed to be destroyed asap.

  • wow its tail is really thick lol. its got cute eyes thats about it lol.

  • What have you done whit it , if I were you I would release it

  • i think its cute :)

  • Those rats are crazy. Even though its so big, youd be surprised how high they can jump.

  • CRAP thats huge!

  • Yeah. that thing was the biggest one I've ever caught

  • holy crap its like a cat
