Phil is so good at poker that he can figure out the only hands that can beat his hand.. unfortunately, he usually assumes the player he's going against has that hand if they play aggressively. He needs to realize that sometimes people just take a chance aka.. gamble.
@wollibuster I'm pretty sure he has 11 bracelets, but his last one was in like.. 2002 or something. He isn't that accustomed to the new breed of hold em player who gamble on chance a lot more than players did in the 80s and 90s when Phil was the King of Holdem
Guys-it is all a deliberate act from Phil. A money making business decision to become the John MacEnroe of poker. I don't think he is really like that, i'm guessing. And it as worked.

LOL donkaments. How did this tool win 11 bracelets? Easy, most of them were won before anyone cared about the WSOP... when the WSOP consisted of a few decent players like Hellmuth, without a large field of really good players between him and a bracelet.
Isn't Hellmuths hand dead when he shows Mike his cards? I know in a cash game your aloud to show your cards but this is a tournment so his hand must be dead once he shows Mike..
There are a few things to consider in this hand : - Hellmuth can't just call the bet : He is an old-school player and for them 15 BBs is really just All-in or Fold mode - The commentator said that the amateur had opened with a raise only one time before in the entire session. Imagine playing 120 hands in a table with a guy that NEVER raises preflop, and then suddenly he raises and you have QQ. I am not saying that it was a good fold, I'm only saying that Hellmuth had solid reasons to fold.
Exactly, based on the face value of the cards it's a shove every time with this stack size, but Phil is naturally paranoid. This other dudes opening range appears to Phil and the commentators to be tighter than 88+, AQ+ -maybe he is a nit whos had a trash run with cards for the last hour and decides, you know what I'm gunna steal this Hellmuth nit's BB with my AQs. So based on his apparent range, I don't totally disagree with the fold. I don't like it but I don't hate it. Its gross
Hellmuth opened up his game the last few years after watching these idiots 3 and 4 bet with crap........online poker has killed poker.........any lucky idiot can win now.
Do any of you uber-donks even know what a triple range merge is? The loose cannon's range is so polarized that a fold is the optimum play. But Hellmuth only has 11 World Championships, so what does he know?
@Spicoli56 11 bracelets true majority came back in the day with100men tourney&guys folding pocket pairs2raises.not doing what the young new generation is doing these days 2-3beting with 9high bluffing with 7 2 three bullets! he is overated unclassy nevr takes responsabilty when he loses has many tells.look here on utube show me more then 1cash game wer he doesnt get crushed hes the laughin stock among his peers now he folds QQ short stacked took5min like a fool! durr ivey true poker.hellmuth abc
@Spicoli56 Suppose that you shove and he only calls when he has KK or AA... You win because you risk $9000 to win $1800, but he is only calling you 1% of the time, which means you pick up $1800 99% of the time and lose $9000 1%. And that's if the guy only calls with KK or AA, if we add some more hands there like AKs he is in better shape. So shoving is better than folding here.
@DRondeel I am saying in the extreme case that he only calls with KK or AA. If his calling range is wider than 1% it's even better to shove QQ :) Read my last 2 sentences "And that's if the guy only calls with KK or AA[1%], if we add some more hands there like AKs[more than 1%] he is in better shape. So shoving is better than folding here."
@Blas01 You're assuming that he would be raising with any 2 cards here. If that were true then he would call less than 1% if he had AA or KK. But given that that was the second time he raised preflop he is obviously being very selective with his raising hands. If his min raising requirements are say AQ and 10 10, we might assume he would be calling all in with QQ or AK (though I think probably a lot more hands than that). In that case he would be calling all in with 80% of his hands
@toby0cooper Against such a tight range it's a fold. Let's say his range is TT+ and AQ++? That would be very selective but can go with that, it's a 5% raise. The math would be: .80*(($9000*.40)-($9000*.60)) + .20($2700) = -$900. However it would be very tight for someone to be only raising 5%!!! As we expand his raising range we get closer to a correct shove, but if Phil knows this guy as such a tight raiser I do agree with the fold.
@Blas01 You aren't taking hand frequency into account. There are 48 hands in your 5% range. 16 of them are ace king, against which Phil is about a 55-45 favorite. 8 of them are AQ, against which Phil is an even bigger favorite, 67-33. That's 24 total hands in which Phil is the favorite, fully half of the total hands! The paired hands cancel each other out (AA, KK, vs JJ, TT), so Phil is a solid favorite against this range. He should have shoved.
poker is the biggest joke ever, its like going this coin will come up 'heads tails tails tail heads' and being right and everyone going 'oh wow you're amazing, good call' but if you get it wrong they go 'wow what an idiot' when it was just luck what came up lol
The guy is a pathological attention seeking crybaby.
Asking for a minute to think but he is not thinking at all. What's going through his head is " I really hope he happens to have KK+ this time so I look smart if I'm right"
The fact is that PH is a total cash game retard. The only reason why people watch him is because it's entertaining when he goes broke
@Foreverguga1 Hellmuth is a lot better than some nobody piece of shit like you sitting infront of a computer and acting like a fucking poker expert. He probably makes dozens of times more money than you, so shut the fuck up.
@Foreverguga1: Exactly i have only been watchin 4/5 years and at no point have i ever thought Hellmuth was a good player! He is an arragont asshole who constantly makes a fool of himself, just look at how he enters the WSOP main event, always making a scene and looking for attention! He makes me sick he thinks he is so important and the most annoying this of all is he really isnt any good at all, a classic example of somebody whos ego is greater then there talent
And honestly, 90% of the medium and even small stakes regs are better cash game players than Hellmuth. He just happened to get into the game before the boom and made his money before all of the talented cash game online grinders got out there.
Absolutely. First of all, cash games are mostly played against fierce competition. The guys he's sitting down with have made their money by consistently beating other winning players.
Phil Hellmuth made his money playing huge MTTs, with 90% of the field being amateurs that are literally donating their chips to him. Making bad calls and paying him off.
PH can outlast donks but he's not nearly in the same league as cash game pros.
He made his money by simply waiting for aces and kings, playing fit or fold poker in full ring MTTS.
Half of the table doesn't realize he's only playing monster hands and still pay him off with middle pair.
If you wait for big hands in 6max cash against pros, people destroy you. He needs to balance big value bets with big bluffs but he's still applying this poor MTT strategy that only works against total retards. He got blinded out vs Antonio, desperately waiting for big hands
You're right about him using MTT stategy on a cash game but to say he has a poor MTT strategy is crazy. He has made a lot of money with his strategy, he has 11 WSOP bracelets (more than anybody else). Cmon you just hate the guy so you talk shit, I don't care much for him either but you have to respect him as a poker player.
He won his bracelets in times when poker was a taboo and the fields were even worse than they are at the WSOP nowadays. No MTT winner will ever gain my respect. Jamie Gold won 8 million dollars not even knowing the basics to beat $1-$2 cash games online.
I do respect online S&G grinders playing HU or 6 max having an edge because they CONSISTENTLY beat others.
Hellmuth will never ever gain my respect. His thought proces about poker in general is pathetic. Plenty of evidence about it online
@Foreverguga1 You cant compare Jamie Gold to Hellmuth. Hellmuth has been winning for over 20 years, Jamie just won 1 tournament but Phil cashes in tournaments consistently. 3 2nd place finishes this year at the wsop all in other games than holdem has to mean something.I respect all poker players from cash to SnG to MTT because no matter which game you play, they are all tough to win at consistently.
You are right. Jamie Gold is 7 steps higher on the ladder of stupidity. Hellmuth has a serious edge on amateurs in live games, Gold hasn't. Maybe PH has more edge on them than Durrrr or any other online wizzard. So that is a quality he definitely has. But if you let hem play poker with the highest level thinkers, he gets destroyed because they are not nearly in the same league. If Hellmuth were to play online poker with Ivey, Dwan, Antonius, Isildur etc, he'd lose at 8BB/100 no doubt
@Foreverguga1 Yet he makes so much money through sponsor and they keep inviting him back on tv more than anyone, so maybe theres a hidden genius that knows what hes doing
They invite him because it's entertaining to see how he cries like a baby. Youtube is full of it.
And there is no genius in him. If you can beat $1-$2 cash games online and you hear him explaining his reasoning in PAD cash games, you realize that he has the poker intellect of a novice player. He made all his money playing with novice players in MTTs. He can't beat any decent cash game over a decent sample of hands because he is a total cash game fish.
@Foreverguga1 Hes not the best poker player, infact he sucks in cash games... pretty good in tournaments but this whole "crying" and making a scene thing is an act for the most part.. he does because he knows this is whats getting him constantly invited... hate him or love him hes entertaining to watch...
@BigSAK88 Exactly. Getting as more exposure on TV as possible can only do good for him and his bank account, which is why he keeps it up, any grown man would, at this point, look back and say "yeah, I've been a whiny little bitch" if it was genuine.
I'm laughing so hard at the 1-2 NL pros commenting here. This is actually a great fold. The very definition of a sick triple range merge by Hellmuth. Of course you donks wouldn't know that.
I don't see the fold either, but if you listen the announcer says thats only the second time the guy had opened up. Phils not a gambler, and he probably figured if he shoved he was getting called, maybe even being behind, definately against AA, KK or AK and he doesn't like flips pre flop. I've folded queens pre flop too, but never in that spot. Still, I agree its a crazy lay down, but Phil does have some pretty crazy instinct...even though he was pretty off on that one.
just signed up to this Full Tilt Poker, used code: GRAB600 when I signed up n got a nice $600 bonus - also got into a few tournaments for free too which is pretty sweeet
Patrik had also a great WSOP, even though he didn't play himself that many tournaments. But his start is interesting, he started with only 50 $ online, and hegot it free from PokerFrik website :)
Ok everyone give phil a minute.....umm I'ma go give Phil a minute!

If his min raising requirements are say AQ and 10 10, we might assume he would be calling all in with QQ or AK (though I think probably a lot more hands than that). In that case he would be calling all in with 80% of his hands
toby0cooper 8 months ago
@toby0cooper Against such a tight range it's a fold. Let's say his range is TT+ and AQ++? That would be very selective but can go with that, it's a 5% raise. The math would be: .80*(($9000*.40)-($9000*.60)) + .20($2700) = -$900. However it would be very tight for someone to be only raising 5%!!! As we expand his raising range we get closer to a correct shove, but if Phil knows this guy as such a tight raiser I do agree with the fold.
Blas01 8 months ago
@Blas01 Based on the evidence, and possibly the fact that he's an amateur, it does seem that he has an incredibly tight range tbh
toby0cooper 8 months ago
@toby0cooper Yes I agree, and I'm sure Hellmuth knew this :)
Blas01 8 months ago
@Blas01 You aren't taking hand frequency into account. There are 48 hands in your 5% range. 16 of them are ace king, against which Phil is about a 55-45 favorite. 8 of them are AQ, against which Phil is an even bigger favorite, 67-33. That's 24 total hands in which Phil is the favorite, fully half of the total hands! The paired hands cancel each other out (AA, KK, vs JJ, TT), so Phil is a solid favorite against this range. He should have shoved.

-New generation players 3bet with queens & someone( Durrr) can 4bet or 5bet.
-Old generation players 3bet or snapcall in this spot.
-Phil Hellmuth folds cause he is still convinced to be the best player in the world.

poker is the biggest joke ever, its like going this coin will come up 'heads tails tails tail heads' and being right and everyone going 'oh wow you're amazing, good call' but if you get it wrong they go 'wow what an idiot' when it was just luck what came up lol

The guy opens for 3 times the big blind and Hellmuth has QQ. Why does he act like he has this life-changing decision?
Ahh, that's right, it's Hellmuth. Tv time.

@VicenzoV Exactly right!

@VicenzoV

@Foreverguga1 your opinionated and dumb.

@Foreverguga1 Hellmuth is a lot better than some nobody piece of shit like you sitting infront of a computer and acting like a fucking poker expert. He probably makes dozens of times more money than you, so shut the fuck up.

roycesboy 7 months ago
@Foreverguga1: Exactly i have only been watchin 4/5 years and at no point have i ever thought Hellmuth was a good player! He is an arragont asshole who constantly makes a fool of himself, just look at how he enters the WSOP main event, always making a scene and looking for attention! He makes me sick he thinks he is so important and the most annoying this of all is he really isnt any good at all, a classic example of somebody whos ego is greater then there talent
Marky1989N1 7 months ago
@Marky1989N1
And honestly, 90% of the medium and even small stakes regs are better cash game players than Hellmuth. He just happened to get into the game before the boom and made his money before all of the talented cash game online grinders got out there.
boredfun91 7 months ago
@Foreverguga1 why do you think he cant play cash but can play tournaments well? is it a different skill set do u think or what?
trixapete 6 months ago
@trixapete
I'm 100% sure he can't beat $2-$4 online
Foreverguga1 6 months ago
@trixapete
Foreverguga1 6 months ago
@Foreverguga1
You're right about him using MTT stategy on a cash game but to say he has a poor MTT strategy is crazy. He has made a lot of money with his strategy, he has 11 WSOP bracelets (more than anybody else). Cmon you just hate the guy so you talk shit, I don't care much for him either but you have to respect him as a poker player.
zerep006 6 months ago
He won his bracelets in times when poker was a taboo and the fields were even worse than they are at the WSOP nowadays. No MTT winner will ever gain my respect. Jamie Gold won 8 million dollars not even knowing the basics to beat $1-$2 cash games online.
I do respect online S&G grinders playing HU or 6 max having an edge because they CONSISTENTLY beat others.
Hellmuth will never ever gain my respect. His thought proces about poker in general is pathetic. Plenty of evidence about it online
Foreverguga1 6 months ago
@Foreverguga1 You cant compare Jamie Gold to Hellmuth. Hellmuth has been winning for over 20 years, Jamie just won 1 tournament but Phil cashes in tournaments consistently. 3 2nd place finishes this year at the wsop all in other games than holdem has to mean something.I respect all poker players from cash to SnG to MTT because no matter which game you play, they are all tough to win at consistently.
zerep006 6 months ago
@zerep006
Foreverguga1 6 months ago
@Foreverguga1 Yet he makes so much money through sponsor and they keep inviting him back on tv more than anyone, so maybe theres a hidden genius that knows what hes doing
BigSAK88 6 months ago
@BigSAK88
And every pro knows it
Foreverguga1 6 months ago
@Foreverguga1 Hes not the best poker player, infact he sucks in cash games... pretty good in tournaments but this whole "crying" and making a scene thing is an act for the most part.. he does because he knows this is whats getting him constantly invited... hate him or love him hes entertaining to watch...
BigSAK88 6 months ago
@BigSAK88 Exactly. Getting as more exposure on TV as possible can only do good for him and his bank account, which is why he keeps it up, any grown man would, at this point, look back and say "yeah, I've been a whiny little bitch" if it was genuine.

sickest slow roll ever if he shoved.
gavnastyyy 11 months ago
I don't see the fold either, but if you listen the announcer says thats only the second time the guy had opened up. Phils not a gambler, and he probably figured if he shoved he was getting called, maybe even being behind, definately against AA, KK or AK and he doesn't like flips pre flop. I've folded queens pre flop too, but never in that spot. Still, I agree its a crazy lay down, but Phil does have some pretty crazy instinct...even though he was pretty off on that one.

i was playing poker last week with my mates
and i had a QQ and i made a raise 1,500
than another one Re raise it to 3,000
i with out any doubt fold the hand
than he show me his cards he had AA
so it was a nice lay down by me
josger16 11 months ago
@josger16 It's not a great laydown surely, as you're getting more than 3:1 so if you're sure he has AA then you can play for set value....
