Just don't feel it. I love my 1210's and wax. I can do stuff like this by running Ableton into my 3rd channel, and having sends/receives routed into.out of Ableton, whilst still actually mixing, and playing disks. hence; Disk Jockey.
@jackmileshunt yeah man i do too like mixing in vinyl but he's paid his dues and became an icon in the techno dance scene so yeah i also like what he's doing digitaly.... he is still doing a lot in the mixes that shows that he can show a side of a song or songs that vinyl mixing would be next to impossible or at the least hard to accomplish since beat matching is a somewhat time consuming.
Respond to this video...his time that would be spent on beat matching richie and others who do the same kind of set up use to expand the creativity and complexity of the tracks
If you do have a track that is a bit 'wonky' (Burial comes to mind) - then you just need to set loops for the in and out sections - generally, as long as you are close, the loops will then stay enough in time that you can sync mix in our out of them.
I would also suggest, you go through the tunes, confirm that the grid is on, then use the 'lock' function - so you know they can be dropped in. The only real time I have an issue, is because I haven't prepped them correctly.
Semantics aside. The point is. Traktor can happily beatgrid all forms of 4/4 music - provided you can identify the first downbeat or the like. I generally set the grid, then at worst (not often) use the tap button to set the BPM (sometimes you just need to double it for D&B), check it against the tick, and done!
Lucky this is simple 4/4 music. try doing this with breakbeat or dnb or dubstep and you are fucked. you will end up syncing the snare with the kick of the other tune.
you can do those thing actually only with minimal. especially when tracks are very monotone to play separately, so you have to make it more reach with another track on it. in electro stuff i would never need so much parallel loops on a track
@muenster1983 completely right. thats why i switched to minimal some years ago. Electro is lots of times really simple too, but it has so much melody that its hard to mix so many loops with so many different keys.
Not to mention trance, which even with 2 tracks being mixed is a big mess.
Cmon guys, save plastic instead of making infinity of vinyls :P New djing is eco :PP + yeah in old days people had only 2 or 3 tracks on vinyls... without anything else than jumping from 1 track to another. this is cool, but you can do the same or more in ableton with an mpc40 and a bcr2000, with out having to break the bank, he has about $10 000 worth that isnt worth the mixes
@mayaxatlPL nice....I'm not judging him 'cause I think hes an innovator but Im not really into the effects he uses on traktor. I prefer the standard effects on the DJM-800+
richie hawtin doesnt need to prove he can beat match , hes a pro we no he can beatmatch fs, syncing his tracks allows him more time to focuse on his mixing and all other amazing stuff in his sets
very help full vid, just wondering would i be able to plug my mixer (which is connected to my 2 cdjs) into the 1d , could i mix with the cdjs and the 1d. if not would i have to get a sound card like the audio 8?
Your stupid. Of course a good DJ could do this all hardware based, but the simpler it is to do, the more things he can do at once and the more amazing his mix becomes. And that's all that matters, not how old school his setup is. The people on the dancefllor don't care.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Kind of a harsh response to a SUBJECTIVE OPINION. Traktor is complicated, serato is what works best in MY own opinion. Even Ableton live can do a better job.
btw. i do care when im on the dance floor because if the dj is using software to mix he is cheating his pay for the night.
jerry800 your an idiot and clearly don't understand the structure and how much is actually involved in Richie's set's. with tracktor he has the ability to mix 4 separate tracks plus all the effects etc.. now if he had to beatmatch everything first his sets would be no where near as experimental and fast paced as they are now. the blend of the mix is far more important than whether he or the software is beat matching it.
thank you for calling me an idiot through youtube.. did it make you feel better about your life? hah... No i agree now i have done my research Traktor is an innovative software along with NI controllers makes for a much better experience but why lugg around soo much? I just think the set up is complicated not the way it works I understand whats going on I am not new to this.
you can find traktor midi maps on the native instrument forums. Or better still, you can learn to write your own. Basically what a "macro" means is assigning two values to one control. The lazy method i used was to install someone else's midi map, look at which controls they used to do a particular function, then modified it for my own needs. It takes a few minutes, but it's both educational and has a good good outcome.
you will have to beatgrid all your tracks to sync traktor when using effects or sync mixing, takes some time to do so, but when you are finished with to beatgrid every track, you no longer have to look out for out of sync mixing or using a effect.
Very cool video. Can someone tell me what song he is playing? IT IS SICK. Hopefully it was not just for this demo. When you hear this kind of music, you know that party is hardcore...
What are the lists of instruments and softwares your using for the whole set up ? Thanks for all your post, trying to get an idea for all the things I need
may seem like a genius, but these loops and mixes are very easy to do in traktor and is not an example of richie's musical genius ;) sounds great though!
well if you mean looping several tracks, then releasing simultaneously in sync, using a xone1D, then you must setup two midi options to one button, this is called a double-macro. One button creates/releases the loop and sync's. For each track (deck), you have one button.
I recommend checking the native-instruments forum, great information there.
I've never made a video in my life, but im dead set on getting it done.
What kills me is that i never rehearse or pre-plan sets, and i've done some 10 hour performances that i could never reproduce again, and not a recording in sight !
So this is a good way to get it down.
It may not be to everyones liking, because i don't like to stick to one sub-genre and i have quite an eclectic taste, taking elements from various sources.
I've been in the business for about 16 years now and have always remained cutting edge with technology and concepts.
Just listening to how he thinks and what he uses, from experience, i think he would be pretty open to my concepts and ideas on expanding what he does.
This technology has been around for quite a long time in one shape or another, but its only of recent years that people have made the transition to fully digital. So it may seem advanced to some, but there are people not in the
anyone who is criticizing here should realize this is an INTERVIEW, with Hawtin talking about the way he uses his setup, not a live performance. yes, if he was looking to impress upon the world (which at his point he doesn't have to) his abilities through this INTERVIEW, then maybe he could've put a little more thought into his "performance". but that's my point, it's not a performance, it's a fucking interview. not him using his set up to it's full potential, THAT costs $. And worth every penny
a completely new slant of it, it takes Dj'ing to a whole new level.
This is mainly because i am from a production background but have always dj'd. Thankfully dance music uses basic elements, chords, arrangements, samples and loops to make.
Next step up is full on production, utilising effect processors (properly) VST's and samplers. But its not practical for a Dj.
This guy isn't using this set-up to its full potential.
I really need to get on this scene.
I've built a similar work flow using different equipment, but what im doing uses it to its full potential.
Its the last step before actually creating new music live, with VST's and samplers.
I sample,loop,effect,re-sample and arrange into my composition on the fly. I also sample a drum loop, chop into drum hits, and create a new beat. Also taking for example a 2 bar phrase from a different genre..
Im not really slating Hawtin, im a fan, and we share alot of the same beliefs about dj'ing.
But i've seen quite a few of his performances now and quite a few youtube videos.
Theres no performance to criticise here, but after seeing how his set-up and workflow is designed and matching that concept with his live performances, also knowing about the equipment he uses, there really is alot more you could be doing.
i think that isn't the best example he choose. the looping of those 4 tracks doesn't sound good to me. but how he brings the 4 tracks back in is great ;-)
i saw him on saturday. he does that alot. hes random. and when he brings in a new element from a new tune he doesnt bring it in seamlessly its very sudden and obvious. and so the whole set sounds "blocky". still, if i had that setup in my room i wouldnt be able to leave the house. im sure its fun, but as for sounding good ?? what happened to good old fashioned seamless mixing.
yeah - i got traktor now and tbh i use the auto beat match thing a bit. you can still do car crash mixes even then so you can concentrate on a good tight mix.

What kills me is that i never rehearse or pre-plan sets, and i've done some 10 hour performances that i could never reproduce again, and not a recording in sight !
So this is a good way to get it down.
It may not be to everyones liking, because i don't like to stick to one sub-genre and i have quite an eclectic taste, taking elements from various sources.

spotlight that are pushing the boundaries even further. Just triggers, waveform visuals, multiple tracks and effects. Not a deck and mixer in sight !
Well i do hope

Where do i go to get my sets out there ?
Oh wait.. a video would be a good start.

sample, process and re-sample. Then maybe slicing the sample and re-arranging to compose a new melody completely different to the orginal source.
With this technique i can build completely new compositions, remixes, re-edits, arrangements, build-ups, breaks, breakdowns all live.
I also do this is a constant evolving style, as if it was all one masterpiece of dynamics rather than just mixing two tracks.
With the recognition of the original material from the audience and then hitting them with

I'm not sure I agree with you, see my comment above. Curious what you think. Cheers.

Aha ok, i see where your coming from, i think.
Im not really slating Hawtin, im a fan, and we share alot of the same beliefs about dj'ing.
But i've seen quite a few of his performances now and quite a few youtube videos.
Theres no performance to criticise here, but after seeing how his set-up and workflow is designed and matching that concept with his live performances, also knowing about the equipment he uses, there really is alot more you could be doing.

i think that isn't the best example he choose. the looping of those 4 tracks doesn't sound good to me. but how he brings the 4 tracks back in is great ;-)

i saw him on saturday. he does that alot. hes random. and when he brings in a new element from a new tune he doesnt bring it in seamlessly its very sudden and obvious. and so the whole set sounds "blocky". still, if i had that setup in my room i wouldnt be able to leave the house. im sure its fun, but as for sounding good ?? what happened to good old fashioned seamless mixing.
funkspasm 3 years ago
I totally agree about the 'blocky' sound.
This is why no matter what the technology does (people complain about auto bpm mapping),
it still takes a good DJ (will be rephrased to Digital Jockey) to make a good set.
DonJuanDeMarco2 3 years ago
yeah - i got traktor now and tbh i use the auto beat match thing a bit. you can still do car crash mixes even then so you can concentrate on a good tight mix.

thats what everybodys expects 1234 1234 1234 you know.. the most of them do it that way and there is no suprise in the set,
i like richie's style because you never know when he gonna drop the bass.. like it more that way.
derlig 3 years ago
the button sync is always on, how can we do that? where he puts the master bpm and all the tracks follow that bpm?
what is the settings he use?
mpcat 3 years ago
Exactly! It takes away the predictability of a live performance.
Who says you have to be so structured and follow the 1 2 3 4 rule throughout a set??
dcrjohnson 3 years ago
he always drops the bass back in late...makes him not sound like every other dj in the planet. thats techno 4 u baby.
