People are fucked up. Values are fucked up. Grrrr. And people ACTUALLY WONDER WHY other countries hate america and think we're a bunch of lazy fat ass scumbags..... UMM... because we ARE.
No, that sounds about right, considering there are so many more people in the world that are living on less than a dollar a day; America and other first-worlds aren't very population dense.
not everyone in hollywood lives like that. their are lots of people in hollywood that are poor. i just wanted to clarify that, but i see what youre saying. :)
you're not just masturbating your mind, you have done'something' now if i ever stumble upon a bloated bellied 'refugee' (apparently you don't know what that is), i'll save him from starvation...by smashing his head against the ground. i love it when people in quarter million dollar homes pine for the poor. you suck...really you are surrounded by syncophants in sequined pants.
you know how i hate to repeat myself, but YOU PAY PEOPLE TO GROOM YOUR FORHEAD. if that doesn't make you feel, uh, like um, kinda dirty.....you're so deep. every birth is, by definition, a death sentence. and it's never good....F- you never had sight of the 'big picture' ass.
i cant believe i was wanting to kill myself today after i found out that the government took over wamu and that i just lost a lot of money because of it. i complained that i lost money but i never thought about others. i guess im just selfish like that and this video has got me thinking a lot.
We all have our struggles from the world's leading counties to stone age war riddled countries we all complain about our lives and the condition of it. But the key point is the condition of the environment that a person was born into and grown up with, as a result we all worry about our lives the same amount.
i dont care what most of the negitive aspects people have to this video. i just want you to know that what you do. letting your voice be heard even too me, is refreshing and i believe that in a world when you as a person has something why not expand and share. i comppletly agree with u.!
I don't really feel for these people, there's enough opportunities in this world to thrive, the fact that these places have refugees is meaningless at the end of the day, it's not as if you'd give up everything you have to one of them in order to make their life better, because you could do that, you could enhance one life.
People will only do something when it has next to no effect on the way they live, and if it did, all they would offer is sympathies, which amount to nothing.
I disagree. Even if it has no effect whatsoever on your life - even if you never think about it twice - the fact that some people in the world struggle to survive isn't meaningless. It changes (or should change) the way people understand the world.
There are a few people who will go out of their way to help others, and that counts for something.
Life IS cruel and unfair, and you'll never be able to help everyone, but that doesn't justify apathy. It doesn't mean you can't make it better.
Changing how people perceive the world isn't enough. The few people that help aren't enough. Feeling for them isn't enough.
The only way for the world to change is for those who abuse power to surrender it for those without, for those with wealth to share it with those without.
This world won't change, humanity has become a monster that's all too happy to sit and do nothing. The things I've seen are unforgivable. Sympathy and hope were never enough...
I think it's wrong to say "the world won't change;" It's changed a lot in the past. I'd argue that humanity is less "monstrous" today than we were, say, in ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, or America in the 1700's. I'd even go so far as to say the world is changing as we speak.
On a smaller scale, I think the things individuals do DO make a difference in others' lives. Saying "The few people that help aren't enough" doesn't mean you shouldn't try to help- it means MORE people should try to help.
What you're feeling is felt by quite a lot of celebrities who make enormous salaries. They feel quite guilty about their enormous wealth and this is a reason some join the Church of Scientology. Scientology says big money is A-O.K. Many celebrities are the most vehemently anti-free market folks you'll ever meet, even though its the free market that enables them to be so rich.People enjoy their wealth but hate themselves for it and the system creating it.
I am SO glad that somebody posted a video on this subject. I feel EXACTLY the same way as you, in fact I made an account just to commend you on this video. You really do have your priorities straight, and you are really helping others in the world. We honestly do have an obligation to help others in the world. In any way we can. Your message is WONDERFUL, and it really speaks to me. One voice can change the world.
I'm not American and one of the first things that shocked me when I went to the US is the tremendous amount of wealth that country has compared to the rest of the world. People live in a rich bubble and think that that's reality! If they only knew what the world and LIFE is all about!
Great video coming from a girl born in the United States of America.
I don't have alot of money, nor my parents. But i'm happy I have a roof over my head! And I've lived in this same trailer since I was 5 & now i'm 12. I do wish I could move but I do appreciate what I have.
These sites are just what I've been looking for, for my kids. They complain because I replace their broken GameCube with another GameCube instead of a PlayStation 3 or a Wii or whatever overpriced game system the uber-capitalists are pushing this week. They don't understand how good they have it. Maybe these games will help. Thanks!
The funny thing about that is so many people are always saying how mankind is superior to animal's yet they live their lives by the animal kingdom mentality. Mankind is the one species that has the ability to correct and fix quite a lot of the problems of the world but they're too damn ignorant and greedy to do so.
Palestine? what's that? there's no such place, maybe you meant Israel. The arabs you're referring to are not poor, they choose to live this way, they actively chose war over peace. 70% of them voted in the last election for the Hamas, over the Fatach, they voted for a terrorist group that have no wish to try to make peace.
yea...yea i know what you mean...i work..but my parents support me [im 16] im lucky enough to have all my needs met and much more...but then i stress and bitch about the small stuff..about the boy i love not loving me, about all this pointless stuff that makes me forget how lucky i am....america is so icolated...were so unaware of the world around us....thanks for posting these videos..=]]]]

your not doing anything, your just trying to show off. oooo my big bed, im so rich and im getting married oooo but those poor refugees... stfu I'm so sick of people and their fake sympathy. I dont care about darfur you know why? because its their own people doing it to them if they want a change they have to do it themselves stand up and stop expecting others to do something about it
o and something to think about while your soaking in your enormous bathtub, money and material possessions are what our country is about, capitalism don't like it? change it. start a revolution and quit whining about how good you have it on youtube
Social is awareness is a burden we should all carry, the world would be better if we did. Glad you see this; the world would be better off if more people felt it and spoke out like this
I don't mean to sound mean or anything, but after seeing two of your videos you seem incredibly depressed.
While I can relate to what you're saying, "suffering" and all that is all relative. If you don't know what a good life is, you don't miss it.
Also, if you spend your time worrying about everyone else you will never be happy. Do what you can (donations, hell I do) raise awarness or whatever, but don't beat yourself up about something you have little to no control over.
Do what you can..If you keep living like that you will fall into a deep depression for things that are out of you own control.Enjoy going to a nice hotel, eating good foods. One step at a time, dont let world issues ruin you love for life.Help every chance you get but dont let it take over your happiness..To them it would seem worst that you live in a great country but your sad at the life you are given..Guilt for things that is out of your control is something you dont need.

.......your blue eyes are so nice, and your blue sweater accentuates them .... please always wear this sweater when you make your videos ..... OK Please?
The madrassas were funded by the East (USSR) and West (NATO and US) - during the cold war for their own egomania and paranoia. While the spark of extremism always existed, cold war added fuel to inflame it into a wild fire. The money created militias abandoned after the grand battles led to a standstill. However, once the monster is brought up on a diet of human sacrifice it keeps asking for more, not caring where the sacrifice comes from.
This turns extremism inwards (ethnic cleansing, oppression of women) and outwards (terrorist threats in the West). West has to become a better judge of genuine threats versus perceived ones, helping to cut off direct and indirect sources of money to these madarassas. Madarassas offer lodge and board to young men and women and demands complete obedience. Small price in lands with no opportunities.
Are you sure the hotel was posh?? ZZ Top?? Sounds like you could have been at a Ho Jo's. . . . I AM just like you--I am empathetic, altruistic, and compassionate. Keep fighting the good fight :)
It's a good thing that you're thinking about these things. But do you think that most Americans want the bulk of the world to live in poverty? I think not. The question is, what's the best way to help people, such as those in Darfur?
Just because you live in a desert region doesn't make you want to kill westerners. I have to say that the good majority of terrorists come from desert areas but those desert areas are muslim. Are you really going as far as blaming the climate for something that is so simple?
Reminds me of a movie. Was called "Dark days". Some people lived in an abandoned section of the underground railway system, under harsh conditions. It was dark and cold. The place was filled with garbage and rats. The guy who made the film lived among them for three years and shared their daily life. Finally they were given real apartments. Was nice to see their happiness.
Ok Ok Ok... you are a good perso and I believe that you believe in what you are standing for. I also believe that my voice will not change your opinion... there's too many voices out there... so if you do read these, which I wouldn't be suprised if you don't, just look at things void of emotion and you will have logic. Not the most humane outlook but logic nevertheless.
There's no such thing as a blessing. One of the main reasons, why this happens is because some believe in the greater good and others believe in what's in front of them. The people who truly believe are eternal doped by those who are willing to take. Certain people find out this truth while others are thrown curveballs for their entire lives. People with opportunity must stop those who seek to take advantage of others because everytime those people succeed, their hunger only grows stronger.
SO communism... jesus... Talk all you want. The point is that in this world we live in, we are one nuke short of becoming that starving third world country.
You can give whatever name you want to what I said. That wasn't what I was talking about all but anyway there is obviously something going wrong with this country. Whether it's the consolidation of media providers, the segregation of schools, the lack of universal healthcare, Katrina or us being one of the later nations to acknowledge global warming. There's definitely something connecting all this stuff. Making money is distracting us as a people from the long-term good.
Ask someone alive in 1955 if there was global warning. If they remember we were headed into the next iceage. The point is that global warming is a political issue with emotional ties to it and in 20 years we will either a)be laughing at the idea or b)forget it completely which will most likely happen.
A year and Darfur could be us. You keep talking behind the hidden face the internet has granted you and I'll keep spending my hard earned money on myself. Call me selfish, call me an oppertunist, hell, call me blessed because, dammit, how many people would come to the aid of America? Israel and that's it. We have been the biggest provider of good will missions in the world and everyone of them would gladly give that up to see America burn.
Very well said Esther. I like the idea said at the beginning of the comments about making a donation from a percentage of the wedding cash that you'll get. We all should do something.
So... what? You want the US to go in there and stop the fighting? Yeah... we've tried that. Everyone hates us because we do that. You guys need to make up your mind. We are rich because we made it this way. A lot of blood and sweat was put into it. I hope you apreciate what your ancestors have done for you.
So you're concerned for humanity. Aside from making you own PSA ~ What are you going to do about it? Talk is cheap. Everyone can "put their voice out there" now.
Okay, so the point of your video is that you really care, right? What are you actually doing for the cause of the downtrodden? I mean, would you sell your car, give the proceeds to the cause and bear the inconvenience of riding the bus? Are you for upping all our taxes so we can all be forced to "care"? How far are you willing to go to prove you care? How much would you sacrifice? Just curious.
I like the way you're very aware of your surroundings, background and culture but have had the opportunity to travel and see first-hand what is going on elsewhere around the world. I really have to get off here before I compliment you to death lol. By the way, I heard that ZZ Top were leaving the hotel and said "Hey, isn't that Faintstarlite from Youtube?" :)
That was a really powerful video, absolutely loved it and really made me stop my busy life and think and more importantly to remind myself to stop, think and act more often. Thank you Esther. I hope I'm not ruining my comments by saying that your video made me think about 'It's A Wonderful Life'.
You are a very caring person and I really admire that. It's one thing to talk about this stuff, but the fact you've been there and talked to them is really amazing. I grew up in what you are talking about, and have stayed at that hotel several times. I don't know. I feel so hypocritical when you talk about this stuff because I know I will probably never see it.
Every man for himself! Survival of the fittest, yeah!!
jk. The worlds such a depressing place. Sometimes i have this urge to help everyone and other times the magnitude of problems become so overwhelming that i just don't want to care. I try to force myself not to care just to cope with the depressing reality that is the world. Fortunately everyone eventually dies.
It's not an obligation to help though, it's a mixture of things that makes people want to help-compassion, emotions, guilt etc
I'm watching some adoption vids on utube right now where ppl adopt children frm places like russia-the looks on these kids faces, and the happiness they express even the ones who don't get adopted(heartbreaking as it may be), and the happiness the ones who do get adopted express-theres amazing things being done by people all the time. Just becuz everyone can't be helped at the same time doesn't mean its a losing situation-even helping 1 person is a great feat. Inspirational people all around.
I´ve been getting that kind of thoughts myself. For me, it´s getting more and more difficult to go to a restaurant without "translating" their ridiculously high prices to some other parts of the world people´s lives(i.e: this steak, 3 weeks of work for a Neurosurgeon in Cuba).
I do thing the more frequently we remember it, the sooner we start stopping the madness.
the problem in palestine (wait, where is that? i dont see it on the map?) relates to the problem with the palestinian government who STEALS from their own people. its very very depressing and sad, but its a problem within the people.
AHAHAHA :D It's because palastine never existed. The Romans named the inhabital region the jews lived in palastine to spite them. SO when the jews finally came back to the area and made it into a paradice, Arabs poored in through the woodwork. Think of them as illigal immigrants tresspassing on Israeli ground.
simply pumping money into developing countries is the single biggest fault we can do as helping counties, because it allows the corrupt governments and power structures to keep in place in the frist place. best negative example for this is africa. over decades, the world has poured in billions of $, and the situation is worse than ever. the real problem are those corrupt governments that want to stay in power at all costs.
the lure of luxury is so subtle and before we know it we've lost all perspective. thanks for a brilliant 'jolt of reality'. we cannot afford to forget those less privileged than ourselves. you point out, 'we can't take it with us when we go'. how we treat downtrodden also affects where we go when that day finally comes!
okay - i only watched 1 minute and 20 seconds of this video.
why dont u just shut up and enjoy the luxury. jesus - u dont have to live in s box to feel good about urself. there is nothing wrong with enjoying what u worked for.
u went to university - so u deserve to be treated.
only reason i am going to uni in 2 years is so that i can get a well paid job and travel. just enjoy it damn (fucking) it!
Interesting video-I'm sorry that you got depressed enjoying something that has handed to you for a brief moment that's not apart of your everyday life. I agree, helping others in a time of need and keeping yourself aware of what another person struggles for is a good and the right thing to do- although what can you do if it's their government that keeps them down or achieving their goals like having fresh water, medicine for their families and a good school system. Just a thought.
Faintstarlight. Brilliant Starlight. If I ever decide to make videos on Youtube it will be because of people such as yourself. I could say something trite like beauty and brains. But you've got something more. Keep on inspiring!
Very good video. So true. I find myself getting depressed when I start to think of all these things. It amazes me that there are people that just live in a bubble and don't know half of what is going on in the world. I guess I'm what they call hyperemotional. I live by the poem that ends with '..but that one gesture meant the world to that starfish' about the little boy that was questioned for throwing starfish back into the ocean. I love that poem.
Its all about non-violence and education. Lets all be a lil more responsible. Sadly, im not so sure the people we need to reach are watching these videos. Be brave and keep spreading the truth. Otherwise its all for nothing. Peace and Love to all
Try working in a newsroom....where you see first hand of the American War Zone. Where stories are edited page after page. A statement said to me, "The readers don't want the truth!" (That is BS). Every paper in the nation is copyedited before the story is pasted on to the page....cut this, cut this, cut this. Advertisitng needs more room!
I completely agree with you sweetie. I understand what you mean by feeling, "dirty". I also know that there REALLY are some rich people in the world who do NOT know how to turn down their own beds and they become EXTREMELY upset about it, if it hasn't been done for them. There are more important issues in the world, Darfur is one of them.
I'm sure you could find better hotels, even in some of those so called poor nations. Conditions in some of these poor nation (poor medical care for example) can be corrected if the wealthy in that nation, helped the poor. There is an expression, before you help other's you take care of your own first.
This is really a wonderful video, and I completely agree with everything you are saying. We can't just sit here when people are starving and turn a blind eye.
I just wanted to put this up here as a note. You mention that you could be in Palestine, but there IS NO Palestine. It's Israel.
You know what? I was just stating a fact to straighten that part out, since in fact, there is no Palestine. It used to be called Palestine but is now Israel. And you speaking like that, well, it doesn't speak so well for your character.
Well to be exact the area known as the British mandate of Palestine includes modern day Jordan, Gaza, Judea and Samaria and Israel, there has never been a state or nation known as Palestine, i dont know exactly what Esthers opinions but i assume by Palestine she means Gaza and Judea and Samaria.
P.S. are you Jewish by any chance Faint? just curious because of your first name.
Great video. I feel the same way as you do. Unfortunately I know a lot of people that don't care about anything as long as it affects America or them self. It's very difficult to talk about serious issues like these with people around my age(22). One good example is the Iraq civilian deaths which get little to no attention in the United States.
ur rite. esspecially wen thats how i started, living on the streets wen i was 12 and being raised by a homeless old man i once called my father before him passing wen i was 14. getting a job just to get clean bread crums in my mouth.
but now im more successful cuz someone helped me out so i donate every day with my hard earned dollars cuz i know wat its like to struggle.
You really are a lovely person, but the weight of the whole world is too much for any one person to bear.
You seem to care a lot about the disadvantaged of the world, which is admirable, but you can't spend your whole life worrying about the people that don't have it as good as you. Yes, be grateful for what you have, but try not to feel guilty about having it.
Change what you can change around you, but don't be too far reaching. Stretch yourself too thin and eventually you'll snap.
i feel the same as her. its a rough place to be . to have everything but be so aware that there are people litterally starving to death. i think that people like her, are the people that save the world. because if everyone walked around greatful and with no burden, ALOT more people would die, and be miserable. I think its important to be greatful, yes. but i also think its important to be consious.
I feel the same way when I have luxury, even the luxury of not having to worry about my next paycheck, or getting to eat something fresh each day. It's a big deal. It's good to remember what other people are going through, so that when we do get that strength or opportunity to make a difference, we are moved to do something with it.
How can we live on with our daily lives knowing that there are so many things going wrong?
Can we really carry the burden of the whole world on our shoulders being sad every day that everything is falling apart? Or would it be better to live a happy life greatfull that we can?
Should we help those that need it the most in a far away country or should we try and help those people that cross our path and need help?
you are inspiring. and well spoken... i am glad to know you remain humble even when you have many blessings and good things around you. it's important to stay grounded, but not to let yourself be burdened or to refuse joy in life because not everyone can have it. Take care. (ps- even if your videos were 10 minutes, people will still listen.)
There is nothing wrong with living the lifestyle you are living, you've worked hard, and etc etc. Many people are living in horrific environments. Don't feel bad about the gigantic difference--- you, me, anybody can help by donating to non-profit organizations that are dedicated to help these people.
Deprivation is relative to our experience and understanding. Making videos to help people focus on, what is to them, an alien world is not a bad thing. Maybe a few people will stop feeling so deprived that they can't afford a new car or take a European vacation.
You felt dirty because the air is physically very dirty. Eventhough Cali has very tough regulations for air care, they have some of the worst smog I have had the displeasure of breathing in, although not as bad as Mexico City...
Oo a lot of idiots have commented that capitalism is the best and any other viewpoint or way of rule is wrong, very very very sad!

This is the best video I've seen of you so far.
I agree with every single thing that you say.
I'm not American and one of the first things that shocked me when I went to the US is the tremendous amount of wealth that country has compared to the rest of the world. People live in a rich bubble and think that that's reality! If they only knew what the world and LIFE is all about!
Great video coming from a girl born in the United States of America.

The funny thing about that is so many people are always saying how mankind is superior to animal's yet they live their lives by the animal kingdom mentality. Mankind is the one species that has the ability to correct and fix quite a lot of the problems of the world but they're too damn ignorant and greedy to do so.

Mikechur 4 years ago
Do what you can..If you keep living like that you will fall into a deep depression for things that are out of you own control.Enjoy going to a nice hotel, eating good foods. One step at a time, dont let world issues ruin you love for life.Help every chance you get but dont let it take over your happiness..To them it would seem worst that you live in a great country but your sad at the life you are given..Guilt for things that is out of your control is something you dont need.

BigLibrarian 4 years ago
This turns extremism inwards (ethnic cleansing, oppression of women) and outwards (terrorist threats in the West). West has to become a better judge of genuine threats versus perceived ones, helping to cut off direct and indirect sources of money to these madarassas. Madarassas offer lodge and board to young men and women and demands complete obedience. Small price in lands with no opportunities.

RebelGunSlinger 4 years ago
You can give whatever name you want to what I said. That wasn't what I was talking about all but anyway there is obviously something going wrong with this country. Whether it's the consolidation of media providers, the segregation of schools, the lack of universal healthcare, Katrina or us being one of the later nations to acknowledge global warming. There's definitely something connecting all this stuff. Making money is distracting us as a people from the long-term good.
verivius 4 years ago
Ask someone alive in 1955 if there was global warning. If they remember we were headed into the next iceage. The point is that global warming is a political issue with emotional ties to it and in 20 years we will either a)be laughing at the idea or b)forget it completely which will most likely happen.
RebelGunSlinger 4 years ago
A year and Darfur could be us. You keep talking behind the hidden face the internet has granted you and I'll keep spending my hard earned money on myself. Call me selfish, call me an oppertunist, hell, call me blessed because, dammit, how many people would come to the aid of America? Israel and that's it. We have been the biggest provider of good will missions in the world and everyone of them would gladly give that up to see America burn.

You are taking a situation ( a hotel )
which is not the norm in this country.
I'm sure you could find better hotels, even in some of those so called poor nations. Conditions in some of these poor nation (poor medical care for example) can be corrected if the wealthy in that nation, helped the poor.

I don't know.
