I was there, in the Bleachers for the first & last game of the series. For all of you who think the Pirates lucked out in the Series, think again. FACTS: Pirates playing in a much Tougher NL won 96 games in 60. Yanks in the weaker American League? 97. Pirates came back a record 48 times that year in the 7th, 8th, & 9th Innings to win. We were able to witness Miracle after miracle it seemed. They were never out of it. Despite the Run Differential, the Pirates deserved it. They were the Best Team!
If the 1960 World Series was judged by how many runs are scored in the series as a whole then the Yankees would've won. But thats not how their decided.
I'm sure Ken Burns has some lame-ass excuse regarding his artistic license and hearing smug Yankee fans whine, but to me it was unforgivable that Mazeroski was not interviewed to describe an accomplishment that he will be remembered for as long as baseball is played. I hope future historians will see this gross negligence as a prime example of East Coast elitism in the popular arts.
Bing Crosby's family has found a kinescope of the entire 1960 series. I hope to watch the whole series one day on MLB network. My friend Ray grew up 4 blocks from forbes field and attended 3 games of the series. He had a ticket but was too nervous to attend game-7!! He thinks Bing chickened out too! Ray says Forbes field was the greatest ball park in history.
It was one time in that amazing Yankee era when the Bronx Bombers got a taste of their own medicine. Maz's walk-off home run still resonates a half-century later. That Series was one of the best -- and strangest -- ever. The Yanks pounded the Bucs in their three victories, but somehow the Bucs scrapped their way to ultimate victory, including taking 2-of-3 in the Bronx.
All these years later, and still no second baseman could turn a "two-ball" (double play) as effortlessly as Maz.
The Mets beating the Orioles in the 69 Series is the upset of the last 40 WS but the Pirates beating the Yankees in the 60 Series is the upset of the last 50 years
PIRATES RULE! Yankee fans and Yankee players, you can't win 'em all! You don't NEED to win them all, you can chill out and just DEAL WITH IT, something you guys aren't used to I see!
And yes, this Yankee fan believes Mazeroski deserved his admission to the Hall of Fame. Maz thought Yankee fans hated him and somehow black-balled him for years. I doubt it. I respect and admire Maz, though I always believed the better team lost. Maz gave us a great memory for a World Series and his defense was top notch, too. He was a scrappy hitter, a slick defensive player and had some power. He hit two HRs in that Series. Maybe in Heaven we'll replay this Series.
I still think it is too bad the double play ball to Kubek took a funny bounce. Without that, the Yankees probably win. But I will say this, it is my favorite all-time World Series and I have a soft spot in my heart for the Pirates because of this, even though I am a true Yankee fan through and through. Whitey Ford was awesome that October. So was Vernon Law, though, and that Elroy Face was a real stopper. Maz, God bless you for the memory anyway. I still love you despite our loss.
I hope that if the Pirates ever get back to the World Series some day, that they win in the same way against the Yankees. Make the fucking Steinbrenners cry all the way back to Yankee Stadium.
What a classic moment in sports--and underdog knocking off the Yanks in dramatic style. Loved the Pirates uniforms, and old classic Forbes Field. Only shame was the Yanks firing Casey--jeez, only 10 Worlds Series appearances in 12 yrs, and they won all but 3 I think.
Hey Stephen Jay Gould, you friggin' Bronx Bummer rump-swab ! You might want to check your historical "facts"; Richardson DID NOT have to jump when Willie McCovey drilled that line drive to make the final out in the 1962 Series! He caught that bullet at his waist....
I recorded live the call of maz's winning HR...the radio announcer words were " Art Ditmar throws...here's a swing and a high fly ball hit deep to left field this may do it...back to the wall goes Berra...it is over the fence home run Pirates win." The announcer called Ralph Terry..Art Ditmar. I'm serious...I have it on tape...
When will the Pirates ever have a team like that or a winning team for that matter. 17 years of losing. Never did I think when I stayed up to watch a one legged Sid Bream beat Pittsburgh in 92 that would be the last time they would make the playoffs
UncleMike: You are right about Burns -- why put a pair of whiners up there? But the whining started before Maz rounded third. Bobby Richardson as MVP? Yes, he had good stats, but much of his production came in garbage time in the Yanks 3 blow outs. Maz should have been MVP.
Well, let's see, in the 49 years since, Yankees 8 titles, with a serious shot at a 9th this time; the Pirates... 2. And the last one really shouldn't count because of those hideous uniforms and that disco music. Even the Steelers' polka music was better than disco!
I'm kidding, mostly. Besides, the Oriole team the Pirates beat in '79 had bad uniforms, too. But to be totally fair, Ken Burns should have interviewed a Pirate fan about this, so he had somebody who didn't look like a whiner.
@UncleMikeNJ Make that 3 for the Pirates. 1960, 1971, 1979. Sorry but it means that much to me :) PS I agree, a Buc fan should have been interviewed. I'm tired of seeing Yankee fans whining about this one. GET OVER IT!
Well, I meant SINCE 1960. 1971 and '79. The thing is, from 1960 until about 1981 or so, and again from 1990 to 1992, the Pirates were always in the mix, at least contending. 1970-92, 23 seasons, 9 Division Titles (and very nearly a couple of others), 2 World Championships. A lot of teams around since then have done far less well. And yet the Pirates have been so poorly run. If management ever got a clue and got the Pirates back to the Playoffs, we'd soon hear PNC Park is too small.
@UncleMikeNJ OK, gotcha. The rest of your post, very true. I'm not sure what happened, but they should have kept Jim Leyland as manager. Lloyd McClendon? A JOKE! And he stayed around for a while! They need another Danny Murtaugh, but then again, he was one of a kind!
Geez, did these whiners (Crystal, Gould, etc.) expect the 1960 Pirates to just roll over for the Yankees? Ha!!! A team has gotta win FOUR games in the World Series or they are LOSERS. Learn to lose with at least a modicum of class and grace for just once Yankee apologists.
The Yankees won virtually every year back then, and listening to these Yankee fans whine about losing one to a gutty little team from Pittsburgh is too much.
@buckfan1969 ---it must have been so frustrating for the Yanks, regardless of how many they won, since they were clearly the better team, and the games they won were so lopsided.
Stephen Jay Gould - I think of the James Caan character in "Misery", except I would chain you to a bed and make you watch a repay of Maz' homerun over and over with toothpicks under your eyelids so you couldn't miss a moment. With Billy Crystal right beside you, same way. WHat bitches!!!
@bfnputz Well, everyone wants to see their team win every season. You never want to miss an opportunity at a championship. Look at how long it took the Red Sox to win one. And the Yankees did outscore Pittsburgh 55-27 in that series. It had to be painful to lose that one.

That game marked the final time Casey Stengel would ever manage in a World Series. He would go on to be the first-ever manager of the Mets in 1962.

Sour grapes. The best team is the team that wins the best of seven series. The scores of the indivudual games are irrelevant.
