I wasn't a fan of Micheal Andretti but damn did I feel bad for him when his car gave up after dominating & leading all those laps, same thing happened to Mario only 5 years earlier...
Indianapolis as a track is still the same spooky-special place, that's no different. What changed was that the officials got terrified of what the drivers' had accepted all along. Get rid of "clone carring", stop smothering development and allow faster speeds, along with all the real danger that comes with it, and you'll have what was. Until then...you have bleeding-heart, saccharine sweet "racing".
@VampireYoshi Tell that to Vitor Meira, or Mike Conway, or Bruno Junquiera, or Simona De Silvestro or others who have suffered injuries at IMS...yeah, it's just so safe now....Simona went out with 3rd degree burns on her hands and qualified an outdated car last weekend, one that was junk....The new car will be here next year with new engine competition, aero kits, etc..But don't EVER say Indy is not without real danger...Tony Renna died in your "saccharine sweet" era at IMS
in terms of the # of former indy 500 winners and other major acheivements of each driver, this is by far in my opinion the most competitive race of all indy 500's.
This was when Indy was at it's best. Run what you brung, whatever engine & chassis you can build or get, bring it, run it, win it damnit. Buick V6, Chevy Indy V8, Cosworth, Ford Cosworth XB, Judd Honda, Mercedes Benz, Lola, March, Penske, Reynard... There comes a time, damn right...
You said it...but the Speedway and the IRL are still scatching their heads why nobody shows up for pole day and qualifying...all they can do is offer gimmicks like they are doing this year on pole day. They are pissing away their fan base and they are too stupid to realize why. Years ago, qualifying was almost as exciting as the actual race!
I've seen F1. It doesn't even begin to hold a candle to the intensity and excitement of that place, when one of the Great Duels is ON. While the technology of F1 is (currently) the best, the sheer insane speed, the danger, the length of the event, and the nonstop pressure it places on the machine itself, never letting up, is unmatched at Indianapolis. Anyone who tells you otherwise has simply never truly experienced it.
I agree completely with the last statement you posted, but it is disappointing to see the cars crawl down pit road with a speed limit, when guys like Johncock, Sneva and Ongais would roar down it. Heck!...arguably Johncock won the '82 race with gutsy pass on the left of a car coming down pitlane...at least it helped him win the race.
Fortunately, I nailed tickets for row A of the southwest vista deck this year...I can't wait....70 days and counting.
the best intro ive ever seen. I loved the seriousness about it back then, because it really meant something. I cant take it serious now because the cars are all ugly, basic, development free, and the drivers arent as good as the lot back then either.
Agreed. The innovation that made Indy what it was is gone. The drivers are glorified corporate spokespeople now. It is a shame to see what we are seeing now. It is just a shell of itself.
When they let team develop/bring their own machines alongside the company-sold ones that so many buy...just like it once was, in other words. Let it be expensive, and let the little guys scrap for that surprising, unexpected advantage, just like Team Walker did the very year of this opening, and almost won the Ice 500 after starting shotgun. Also, get over the apparently liberalistic shivering TERROR of HIGH speeds, and realize it's always been a dangerous sport for daredevils.
@TruenoandLevin86 never again, sadly, alot of the indycar drivers are moving to stock car racing, anymore indycar is mostly full of openwheel has-beens, however there are skilled drivers in that series, it's just, you mention will power and any bread-and-butter motorsports fan (those who mainly watch nascar, or the "watch it if it's on" type) they will say "who the hell is will power?"
I was never a big Paul Paige fan, couldn't stand him. These new commentators make me change that sentiment. They are horrible. We need Paul Paige, Bobby Unser, Bob Jenkins, and the Doc Jerry Punch on pit road.
Thanks a million for these classic vids. Indy is truly the Greatest spectacle in all of sports. I love seeing the Rahal,Foyt and Andretti names at the Speedway to remind us of the classic family and tradition this sport has!!!!!!!!!
Correct, the 91 Penske was the one he crashed. (His 91 winner) was his backup. It was wrecked, but they put it back together for display. It's one of the few Penske winners that doesn't run.
Ahhhh....true history. How Indy was meant to be! How adrenaline is started! Those were the years!
Ever notice who and who alone was responsible for turning this video into such hallowed and far away memories? It was like saying this is MY track and YOU can't run on it! Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah! Tony Hulman would be so disappointed in what his grandson did to his legacy.
well yes i agree tony hulman would've choked in response to the changes at indianapolis. the ultimate change has parted open wheel racing for a very long time. NOW...the corner has been turned!! despite the current american economic debacle...the indianapolis 500 has entered its 100th year! a truly awesome achievment! the greatest single day spectator sporting event in the world!! i cannot wait...to be back home again in indiana!!!!
You are right! I know I have been getting the drive back, as evidenced by the Indy videos on my channel. Yes, getting the urge, the thrill is returning...the heritage, the history, the drivers, the speed.....it is The Indy 500!
and i believe its going to be a great one this year. Alot of talent in the field. Alot of stories and drivers to follow. and as Al jr. once said "you just don't know what indy means" its the pinnacle of racing. and its the place that brings out the best in drivers who race there.
Those were the real good old days of Indy racing. Bring back the Andretti's,Unser's and the turbos. Bring back the excitement of american open wheel racing istead of the unknown wantabe's.
Indy predates all the names you mentioned. While I agree that those days were awesome, there are no and should NEVER be 'provisionals' (like in a certain N-word) for 'famous names': "On merit, on not at all."
As for the tech, make it count for the evolution of the automobile; the current subject is fuel mileage. So make 'em improve on it, via challenging rules, and if turbos help fuel economy, add them. If they don't, keep 'em off.
I know I've got nothing on people that have been going to Indy for years and years, but after being conscious of the Indy 500 since 1968, I'm going to my first race this year and I'm not ashamed to say - I AM SOOOO NERVOUS!
I have been a Indianapolis Car fan since 1956. Indy 500 is still "The Greatest Spectical in Sports. And, now, it open to the people who refused to run in it the last 14 years.
Interesting enough, when Carl sold the track to Captain Eddie, he had lost most of his passion for autoracing, and the track itself. Frank Wheeler was pretty much in control of the speedway when Carl sold it to Rickenbacher.
I think you mean James Allison...Wheeler passed away in 1921. Either way, it was still his, even if he himself lost sight of it in favor of real estate.
Fisher's Dream: Auto manufacturers racing against each other, developing new technologies and new ways of doing things, then introducing these changes into the automobile industry, so as to advance the technology of society itself.
And it still MATTERS, dammit. Fuel economy, the passion of the moment; someday it'll be something else.
In its 98-year history, 709 drivers have started the run, but the Indianapolis 500 has only permitted 67 to make the final turn into Victory Lane. As this day begins the focus is 200 laps away. An antique cup waits for the new champion. Whose likeness will be molded in silver to join the historic line? The 500 miles lie ahead."
I appriciate the updated facts, they are going to come in handy for me. I am making a Delta Force intro and starting grid for this years race and the updated stats will fit well in the voiceover of the starting grid.
Look for it sometime between Bump Day and Race Day.
Pajas, I'm 33 years old and have been to Indy 5 times, this year will be my 6'th. I can Honestly say that I'm envious of you. Theres nothing like your first time. You have nothing to be ashamed of.
"The two and half miles beckon, Indianapolis is about speed. The quickest driver. The ultimate lap. No race is faster. No race is closer or more difficult, but Indy is much more. The 500 mile race is a celebration, a spectacle, the largest single gathering of people for a sporting event. Indianapolis is dangerous. Its narrow road and concrete walls tear at man and machine. A skillful drive can turn to disaster without warning.
"But the quickest times are found just inches from the walls. It is there the bold must rise; searching for the fastest lap. Even the bravest are not without fear..."
"To drive Indy requires skill. To race at the front, dedication. To win, courage. A champion must push beyond fear. The four corners at Indianapolis draw out a special significance."
Great video. I have allways said that IRL is better than ChampCar. INDYCAR all the way. Indy - the only racetrack that puts a lot of respect even in the best F1 drivers.
agree that the IRL is currently better than Champ Car, but it is nowhere near the quality of the racing in these Indy car videos. With the imminent merger/buyout ahead, hpefully we will witness these times again.
I just dont like spec series. Racing is supposed to be a contest between drivers and cars. When everybody is running the same chassis, tires and engines, it defeats half the purpose. Indy has become a 500 mile Honda/Firestone advertisement. There needs to be manufacturer competition otherwise the race car becomes just like the tennis racket, necessary but not the main focus.
I don't know if those of you bashing the 500 have been there in the last decade, but nothing's changed...it's the greatest single race in the world...period. The racing is unbelievable, and the goosebumps are still very prominent on this race fan.
My God do I miss Paul Page....all his Indy intros with that delta force theme used to get me so fired up....THIS IS WHAT I GREW UP WITH, keep the vids coming
I used to be a huge open wheel fan....but since the big split things have gone down the tubes. Luckly we have the American Lemans Series....otherwise the U.S. wouldn't have any decent racing. NASCAR is terrible (especially with the Car Of Tomarrow), and both of our open wheel series are dying and lacking the magic of the 80's and early 90's.
Indy was awesome back then. There's none of the goosebump effect anymore. The current cars look stupid and even worse, its a slow one make series, single seater race.
These are the best intros! IRL, Champ Car, Cart, USAC...I'm a born and bred Hoosier, and that means from the crib you love basketball and the Indianapolis 500. It's time for everyone to get their egos out of their ass, unite open wheel racing for the better of all involved, owners, drivers and fans, because for over 10 years, it's been a house divided.
Indeed, 12 years was a waste... IRL wasn't as sucessful as CART with Indy-500 and CCWS can't be recognizable as a successor to CART (That Can't Be CART's series successor with no OVALS!).
Just get the damn merger done so that both fans of Both series can hear what this music intro of the Indy-500 was all about: FAME!
Indy-500 & IMS was for any AOWR series that runs on it including USAC, CART and IRL. Who said it was a USAC race... Look before USAC wasn't even born yet.
It was absolutely a AAA race, though. When Bill Holland ran in an "outlaw," non-AAA sanctioned race, they kicked him out for a year. This power to decide who ran at Indy gave AAA dictatorial power over American motorsports...stating it, then, very simply: INDY...was everything. Still is, to a lot of us.
Man, these Indy 500 intros were the best. . .My heartbeat rate would jump a lil' when the Delta Force Theme would kick in- To me it was more asociated to the Indy 500 than the movie. . . I think this truely was *THE* best 500 not only because of the finish, but of the huge amount of talent there was at the time. After of which, a few would retire- Foyt, Mears (both 4 time winners) 83' winner Sneva, and 2 time winner Johncock. 92' was an end of an era really.
CART never sanctioned a single Indianapolis 500. Ever. They showed up for it, because it was Indy, greater than any owners, any (ALL) drivers, all organizations. And ever since Tony Hulman helped found the replacement for AAA, Indy has deserved to lead American open-wheel racing. Enough said.
Yes CART never sanctioned an Indy 500. Yes USAC and all their wisdom were so good they couldn't promote the series which Dan Gurney wrote up in the his White Paper. And also years later even the IRL had to replace USAC. Indy may, not deserve, to lead AOW but it sure shouldn't be Tony George.
CART promoted some things, but they were singularly attempting to make American open-wheel into a kind of F1 Jr., which made for MIND-NUMBINGLY boring events at several locations, some of which IRL is actually RETURNING to, such as the extremely narrow Belle Isle course. By 1995, Indy was the only event I was watching of the whole series, with as boring as it had become; meanwhile, every IRL race I've watched/listened to since its inception has been interesting.
I wonder what music was played when they were announcing the starting field that year. I think it's as cool as the Delta Force theme. I know the music played during the unveiling of the starting field was used for the '94 & '95 season as well. Does anybody know what that music is?
How about some "Delta Force: 2009". Insert appropriate Indy 500 highlights from past and near future where fitting...
"100 years ago, a group of businessmen in a booming automotive hub built a facility on 320 acres of land to serve as a proving ground for their industry's wares. The city was Indianapolis, and the facility, after the decision was made to repave the original surface, would forever become known as the Brickyard."
"It is here on every Memorial Day weekend that 33 drivers make their quest towards history. With every running of the Indianapolis 500, a new chapter of racing is made, and another legend is born. This year takes an even greater importance: not only is it the centennial of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but it marks the first 500-mile-race of a reunited IndyCar World Series."
"The Indianapolis 500 is the ultimate celebration of speed, the most popular one-day sporting event in the world. The thrill and the danger, the history and the prestige, the tradition and the ceremony all bring 400,000 fans together to this track in Indiana. In 500 miles, one driver will overcome the limits of man and machine to become the champion of the greatest spectacle in racing. 33 begin, but only one will drive into Victory Lane with a bottle of milk and a $2,000,000 payday waiting."
Fishflake1209 that's an excellent Indy-500 Intro speech, I wonder if we had a merger everybody will be excited... That's an excellent speech for the future of the Indy-500. Tell that to our favorite Paul Page!
I'd love to see a reunited Indy 500. Imagine a Pole Day with Bourdais, Tracy, Allmendinger, Wheldon, Kanaan, Castroneves, Wilson, Dixon, Hornish, Mi. and Marco Andretti, Patrick, Ranger, Clarke, Legge, Phillipe, Rahal as ICWS regulars and drivers from NASCAR, ALMS, and Grand-Am giving it a go.
Oh yeah, her too. ;) Maybe even include James Stewart, Travis Pastrana, and Ricky Carmichael in that. I plan on making the 500 an annual trip starting next year. Hopefully, things will be all good by then.
I'd like Paul Page back. If not him, maybe somehow steal the SPEED F1 tandem of Varsha and Hobbs (don't know if Matchett would do Indy).
I just wish they would bring back the Delta Force theme for every Indy 500 intro. I just love this theme and it clearly gets me thinking of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
Totally agree with everyone in here, the last thing open wheel racing needed was to UNinternationalize itself. Emmo, Nigel, Piquet, racing with guys like Unser, Jr., Rahal, Sullivan, Tracy, Andretti, it was the golden era of racing tragically cut short in '96.
Even if no one believes me, I have no doubt that it wasn't really about internationalism. It was about power, and Indy keeping itself from being in danger from a boycott from team owners, or any other attempt at something that smacks of 2005 at the U.S. Grand Prix. Yes, there has been a boycott by SOME of the best drivers. The Derby faced that from 1892 to 1913, twenty years.
Of course it wasn't internationalism! Tony George just needed a bunch of bullshit reasons to create a "unique" series. He just did it because he wanted the power, it was never about a more "American" open wheel series.
That may well be, but frankly I'd prefer Indy to have the power than the owners having it, because the owners wanted to all but make American open-wheel into F-1 Jr.
These intros from 1988 to 1995 were classic. I think they brought the delta force theme back in 2001 or 2002, but unfortunately they pretty much stopped using it :(
This opening from the 1992 Telecast shws clearly why those of us who loved the Indy 500 when it was the event, dispise what Tony George did in forming the IRL in 1995. Contrary to the hype on ABC today, the IRL Indy 500 is a joke compared to this open era. Notice the packed grandstands and the great international drivers vs now. Too bad but thanks for the trip back.
It is a shame that they had to waste pretty much a decade before bringing the Indy 500 back to a somewhat respectable state. I didn't really become an open-wheel racing fan until the late 90's, so I didn't even realize what was going on. If I were a fan back then like I am now, the 1996 Indy 500(as well as the next several) would have been devastating.
Holy shit, I think I like racing now.

@GPWSofficial The song is the theme from the movie "The Delta Force"(1986) starring Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin. It was written by Alan Silvestri.

Unfortunately its probably too late..I wouldve thought that Indy would be impossible tp ruin..my congrats to Tony George..you managed it.

Given recent events, this video makes me want to sob tears both bitter and exultant.
"TWELVE YEARS WAITING..."...has finally come to an End. THE WAR...is...OVER.
Let Carl Fisher's Dream resume.
VampireYoshi 4 years ago 5
Interesting enough, when Carl sold the track to Captain Eddie, he had lost most of his passion for autoracing, and the track itself. Frank Wheeler was pretty much in control of the speedway when Carl sold it to Rickenbacher.
ljostarter 4 years ago
I think you mean James Allison...Wheeler passed away in 1921. Either way, it was still his, even if he himself lost sight of it in favor of real estate.
Fisher's Dream: Auto manufacturers racing against each other, developing new technologies and new ways of doing things, then introducing these changes into the automobile industry, so as to advance the technology of society itself.
And it still MATTERS, dammit. Fuel economy, the passion of the moment; someday it'll be something else.
VampireYoshi 3 years ago
Sorry, you're correct. I meant to say Mr. Allison. Pop Myer's also did a lot in the Speedway's management in the 20's.

You Mean The IRL vs. ChampCar War Battle Is Over.
ltnascar 4 years ago
In its 98-year history, 709 drivers have started the run, but the Indianapolis 500 has only permitted 67 to make the final turn into Victory Lane. As this day begins the focus is 200 laps away. An antique cup waits for the new champion. Whose likeness will be molded in silver to join the historic line? The 500 miles lie ahead."
clements22osu 4 years ago 7
I appriciate the updated facts, they are going to come in handy for me. I am making a Delta Force intro and starting grid for this years race and the updated stats will fit well in the voiceover of the starting grid.
Look for it sometime between Bump Day and Race Day.

Pajas, I'm 33 years old and have been to Indy 5 times, this year will be my 6'th. I can Honestly say that I'm envious of you. Theres nothing like your first time. You have nothing to be ashamed of.
djski442 3 years ago
"The two and half miles beckon, Indianapolis is about speed. The quickest driver. The ultimate lap. No race is faster. No race is closer or more difficult, but Indy is much more. The 500 mile race is a celebration, a spectacle, the largest single gathering of people for a sporting event. Indianapolis is dangerous. Its narrow road and concrete walls tear at man and machine. A skillful drive can turn to disaster without warning.
clements22osu 4 years ago 7
"But the quickest times are found just inches from the walls. It is there the bold must rise; searching for the fastest lap. Even the bravest are not without fear..."
"To drive Indy requires skill. To race at the front, dedication. To win, courage. A champion must push beyond fear. The four corners at Indianapolis draw out a special significance."

Great video. I have allways said that IRL is better than ChampCar. INDYCAR all the way. Indy - the only racetrack that puts a lot of respect even in the best F1 drivers.
Tony George is the KING!
AJ1964 4 years ago
agree that the IRL is currently better than Champ Car, but it is nowhere near the quality of the racing in these Indy car videos. With the imminent merger/buyout ahead, hpefully we will witness these times again.
marksie99 4 years ago
Now merger's finished. Can't wait May 25th, and the first 500 since 1995 which really represents top of American open-wheel racing.
macheta 4 years ago 4
I just dont like spec series. Racing is supposed to be a contest between drivers and cars. When everybody is running the same chassis, tires and engines, it defeats half the purpose. Indy has become a 500 mile Honda/Firestone advertisement. There needs to be manufacturer competition otherwise the race car becomes just like the tennis racket, necessary but not the main focus.
XXformula 4 years ago
I agree completely, which is why I find myself watching more F1 lately than anything.
Hollywood49 4 years ago
I don't know if those of you bashing the 500 have been there in the last decade, but nothing's changed...it's the greatest single race in the world...period. The racing is unbelievable, and the goosebumps are still very prominent on this race fan.

My God do I miss Paul Page....all his Indy intros with that delta force theme used to get me so fired up....THIS IS WHAT I GREW UP WITH, keep the vids coming
XXformula 4 years ago 4
I used to be a huge open wheel fan....but since the big split things have gone down the tubes. Luckly we have the American Lemans Series....otherwise the U.S. wouldn't have any decent racing. NASCAR is terrible (especially with the Car Of Tomarrow), and both of our open wheel series are dying and lacking the magic of the 80's and early 90's.
ALEX ZANARDI FOREVER!!!!!
XXformula 4 years ago
Indy was awesome back then. There's none of the goosebump effect anymore. The current cars look stupid and even worse, its a slow one make series, single seater race.

It still amazes me that as tough and as gruff as AJ always was, he still had his honest humble side that you rarely saw.
This was one of them.
racermac1988 4 years ago 3
All of the historic races are great, regardless of what the series is. Long Beach, The 500, Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring.
racermac1988 4 years ago
I agree. . .And I'm not sure Le Mans is as good (to me anyway) as it once was with the demise of the Group C cars.
BlueFox284 4 years ago
Le Mans is WAY better. Sorry the 500 is not what it was.

These are the best intros! IRL, Champ Car, Cart, USAC...I'm a born and bred Hoosier, and that means from the crib you love basketball and the Indianapolis 500. It's time for everyone to get their egos out of their ass, unite open wheel racing for the better of all involved, owners, drivers and fans, because for over 10 years, it's been a house divided.
photog30 4 years ago 2
Indeed, 12 years was a waste... IRL wasn't as sucessful as CART with Indy-500 and CCWS can't be recognizable as a successor to CART (That Can't Be CART's series successor with no OVALS!).
Just get the damn merger done so that both fans of Both series can hear what this music intro of the Indy-500 was all about: FAME!

Indy was never a CART race - it was a USAC race.
IRLIndyCar 4 years ago 3
Ya Lie! :P
Indy-500 & IMS was for any AOWR series that runs on it including USAC, CART and IRL. Who said it was a USAC race... Look before USAC wasn't even born yet.
indyfan2 4 years ago
It was absolutely a AAA race, though. When Bill Holland ran in an "outlaw," non-AAA sanctioned race, they kicked him out for a year. This power to decide who ran at Indy gave AAA dictatorial power over American motorsports...stating it, then, very simply: INDY...was everything. Still is, to a lot of us.
VampireYoshi 4 years ago
tony and kevin need to get a merger
LolaJudd 4 years ago
Man, these Indy 500 intros were the best. . .My heartbeat rate would jump a lil' when the Delta Force Theme would kick in- To me it was more asociated to the Indy 500 than the movie. . . I think this truely was *THE* best 500 not only because of the finish, but of the huge amount of talent there was at the time. After of which, a few would retire- Foyt, Mears (both 4 time winners) 83' winner Sneva, and 2 time winner Johncock. 92' was an end of an era really.
BlueFox284 4 years ago 4
indy is and will always will be no matter what tony does
rayesoflight 4 years ago 2
Its Indy 500. IRL race. Those days it was USAC. Sure many CART drivers took part too.
AJ1964 5 years ago
The IRL wasn't announced until March 94. First OFFICIAL race was Jan 96. Enough said.
champcar4ever 5 years ago
CART never sanctioned a single Indianapolis 500. Ever. They showed up for it, because it was Indy, greater than any owners, any (ALL) drivers, all organizations. And ever since Tony Hulman helped found the replacement for AAA, Indy has deserved to lead American open-wheel racing. Enough said.
VampireYoshi 4 years ago 2
Yes CART never sanctioned an Indy 500. Yes USAC and all their wisdom were so good they couldn't promote the series which Dan Gurney wrote up in the his White Paper. And also years later even the IRL had to replace USAC. Indy may, not deserve, to lead AOW but it sure shouldn't be Tony George.
champcar4ever 4 years ago
CART promoted some things, but they were singularly attempting to make American open-wheel into a kind of F1 Jr., which made for MIND-NUMBINGLY boring events at several locations, some of which IRL is actually RETURNING to, such as the extremely narrow Belle Isle course. By 1995, Indy was the only event I was watching of the whole series, with as boring as it had become; meanwhile, every IRL race I've watched/listened to since its inception has been interesting.
VampireYoshi 4 years ago
This is IRL!

I wonder what music was played when they were announcing the starting field that year. I think it's as cool as the Delta Force theme. I know the music played during the unveiling of the starting field was used for the '94 & '95 season as well. Does anybody know what that music is?
racguy1183 5 years ago
I love watching these old intros I remember watching them when I was younger
gregster84 5 years ago
How about some "Delta Force: 2009". Insert appropriate Indy 500 highlights from past and near future where fitting...
"100 years ago, a group of businessmen in a booming automotive hub built a facility on 320 acres of land to serve as a proving ground for their industry's wares. The city was Indianapolis, and the facility, after the decision was made to repave the original surface, would forever become known as the Brickyard."
fishflake1209 5 years ago
"It is here on every Memorial Day weekend that 33 drivers make their quest towards history. With every running of the Indianapolis 500, a new chapter of racing is made, and another legend is born. This year takes an even greater importance: not only is it the centennial of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but it marks the first 500-mile-race of a reunited IndyCar World Series."
fishflake1209 5 years ago
"The Indianapolis 500 is the ultimate celebration of speed, the most popular one-day sporting event in the world. The thrill and the danger, the history and the prestige, the tradition and the ceremony all bring 400,000 fans together to this track in Indiana. In 500 miles, one driver will overcome the limits of man and machine to become the champion of the greatest spectacle in racing. 33 begin, but only one will drive into Victory Lane with a bottle of milk and a $2,000,000 payday waiting."
fishflake1209 5 years ago
Fishflake1209 that's an excellent Indy-500 Intro speech, I wonder if we had a merger everybody will be excited... That's an excellent speech for the future of the Indy-500. Tell that to our favorite Paul Page!
indyfan2 5 years ago
I'd love to see a reunited Indy 500. Imagine a Pole Day with Bourdais, Tracy, Allmendinger, Wheldon, Kanaan, Castroneves, Wilson, Dixon, Hornish, Mi. and Marco Andretti, Patrick, Ranger, Clarke, Legge, Phillipe, Rahal as ICWS regulars and drivers from NASCAR, ALMS, and Grand-Am giving it a go.

OWFan, You forgot Sarah Fisher in the list though, lol.
"Live at Greatest Spectacle of racing, the 92nd Indianapolis 500," Paul Page... <-Just kidding...
indyfan2 5 years ago
Oh yeah, her too. ;) Maybe even include James Stewart, Travis Pastrana, and Ricky Carmichael in that. I plan on making the 500 an annual trip starting next year. Hopefully, things will be all good by then.
I'd like Paul Page back. If not him, maybe somehow steal the SPEED F1 tandem of Varsha and Hobbs (don't know if Matchett would do Indy).
OWfan 5 years ago
I just wish they would bring back the Delta Force theme for every Indy 500 intro. I just love this theme and it clearly gets me thinking of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
racguy1183 5 years ago
Here's Paul Page's ingredients to make cool Indy-500 intros:
1) Delta Force music by Chuck Norris
2) The sound of the CART Indycars
3) The history of Indianapolis-500
4) The benefits of the good old Indy-500
5) Exciting Races of good old Indy-500
6) The most famous drivers of Indy
I hope you don't include IRL mock-up Indy-500 races with Delta Force. Because if I see this on TV with IRL, I'll turn off the TV...

Totally agree with everyone in here, the last thing open wheel racing needed was to UNinternationalize itself. Emmo, Nigel, Piquet, racing with guys like Unser, Jr., Rahal, Sullivan, Tracy, Andretti, it was the golden era of racing tragically cut short in '96.
chemhead1 5 years ago
Even if no one believes me, I have no doubt that it wasn't really about internationalism. It was about power, and Indy keeping itself from being in danger from a boycott from team owners, or any other attempt at something that smacks of 2005 at the U.S. Grand Prix. Yes, there has been a boycott by SOME of the best drivers. The Derby faced that from 1892 to 1913, twenty years.
VampireYoshi 5 years ago
Of course it wasn't internationalism! Tony George just needed a bunch of bullshit reasons to create a "unique" series. He just did it because he wanted the power, it was never about a more "American" open wheel series.
chemhead1 5 years ago
That may well be, but frankly I'd prefer Indy to have the power than the owners having it, because the owners wanted to all but make American open-wheel into F-1 Jr.
VampireYoshi 5 years ago

These intros from 1988 to 1995 were classic. I think they brought the delta force theme back in 2001 or 2002, but unfortunately they pretty much stopped using it :(
Rybo85 5 years ago
that is one awesome song playing there in background, does anyone know the composer?
Petrooli 5 years ago
The music is the theme song to the movie Delta Force with Chuck Norris and the composer is Alan Silvestri.
champcar4ever 5 years ago
oh, thank you. i've should know that :)
Petrooli 5 years ago
This opening from the 1992 Telecast shws clearly why those of us who loved the Indy 500 when it was the event, dispise what Tony George did in forming the IRL in 1995. Contrary to the hype on ABC today, the IRL Indy 500 is a joke compared to this open era. Notice the packed grandstands and the great international drivers vs now. Too bad but thanks for the trip back.
WestLAGuy 5 years ago
It is a shame that they had to waste pretty much a decade before bringing the Indy 500 back to a somewhat respectable state. I didn't really become an open-wheel racing fan until the late 90's, so I didn't even realize what was going on. If I were a fan back then like I am now, the 1996 Indy 500(as well as the next several) would have been devastating.
Rybo85 5 years ago
