  • Great Video.

    Q:

    1. This grinding process reduces the overall length of the housing. Do you compensate?

  • @Froggylyn - I don't in most cases because I'm only removing about .010"-.015";

  • Yes, those blow proof bell housings are just stamped out and are not very square at all. Then you still need to check dowel pin alignment as well, to keep the input shaft alignment center of the crankshaft. Tilton makes a great tool for that.

  • This frightens me, should I do this with the bell houseing I'm getting? It's a Lakewood and they do have a good rep but this looks like any stamping could use this.

  • never even thought that was possible , this is why i suscribed long ago

now i know not to use shady bellhousings

  • Wait are you saying that a bent up bellhousing led to the trashing of a crank?

  • @halohadel - YES.

  • @fiatnutz

    How?

  • you guys do nice work how much to resurface a nissan 350z flywheel?

  • Another great video John. I also have your book and watch all your videos. You have even got me a little interested in Fiat cars.

Could you do some videos on balancing both rotating ang reciprocating parts please? That's something I still don't understand how it's done.

  • John, I bought your book about ten years ago (Sunnen block/head guide) Today, I am still watching and learing from the master. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the kind comments, I'm glad that I am still able to pass along a lot of what I have learned to others. JE...

  • Thats really cool...Gotta love multiple use machines...Question..you said the guy wipped out the crank...what did he do exactly? If you don't mind me asking.

  • Having the input at an angle, it pushed the crank to one side and caused the mains to wear out rapidly - like within a few hours. Another problem with after- market bell housings is alignment w/crankshaft, they have to be less than .005" in concentricity. Special dowels are used to correct this condition. Out of parallel surfaces require grinding of the housing.

  • wow John that new one that I never seen done before. Thanks I learned something that what other things you can do with that machine!

  • I'd like to meet this man.

  • I'd like to be his apprentice!

  • Thats an odd one... never heard of that being done.

  • yeah that is a pretty rare sight resurfacing a bellhousing guess its cheaper to resurfac then getting a new one

  • Great work John.

  • neat!
