now, i spun the shirt the way you did in the video but i dyed the shirt in wedges and the "spiral" effect did not come out that well. do you have any idea why?
How you aply the dye does make a big difference. The wedge is more `broken`, while the idea of following the spin or fold outward is more `flowing`. There is a video here or on FaceBook showing the way aplying dye to the same spiral spin makes such difference. (Spiral Dying Four Different Ways - or something like that).
Cool yeah i tried the shirt today. I left it in a plastic bag in the sun. Turned out pretty cool. I might get some photos of them and put em up if you wanna have a look.
Thanks for the help. The shirts ive made so far have turned out good. :]
what are the effects of dyeing pizza like segments on the spiral rather than rings? are there videos or pictures that document the effect of this technique?
Aww. That looks good. Our spirit theme for this week is tie dye but I didn't think it would take this long to make a shirt :[ Any other way to make it faster?
helped me out so much, i was having a lot of trouble, but now i got it figured out
but only one minor problem
when i went to rinse some of the excess dye out after two days of sitting in the plastic bag, my red started to bleed and turn to a pinkish red, which kinda looks dumb.
i was wondering if it was the dye i was using or if thats natural sometimes.
hey man i did my dye and got the peace symbol on the front just how id hoped ill send you a photo of it if you give me ur email adress and tell you how to do it if you want its a fairly easy process considering and there was no dye run so i was happy
i jus got done makin a tie-dye man imma let it sit in a bag for a couple of days hope they come out kool...but i got some dye on my hands...whts the best way to get it off..the box said non toxic lol hope i'll be alright lol
thanks man i actually got it off wit some gojo and a hard ass brush lol, my shirts came out alright, i never made any tie-dye b4it was pretty fun but it took me 4ever to get it to stay i put a rubber band around it, i made 3,i plan on makin alot more in the future but the dye isn't that cheap, 5$ peace lol the dye i bouht from hobby lobby came out of one of those bottles and u jus add water, it said to use within 45 min. or it loses intencity or somethin, do u re-use your die u have left over?
iam gonna be using purple dye so what iam gonna do is make a dark batch do the peace symbol and wash it out till he water runs clear then dry it then tye dye it with a lighter batch of purple do u think that would work as well and i know this would be getting you frustrated by know but yer would that work and whats the use of salt and do i put it in with my mixture or in with the bucket of water iam gonna wash the tye dyed shirts in?? thanks
I think your best bet is to practice on sheets and that sort of thing first... makes cool flags. Then you can get some ideas working before you make more shirts or clothes.
I am not sure how they do those nice peace signs you see sometimes.
Some ties require stitching with thread too.
The patterns I have shown are easier than those specialty dyes. Many of the super sweet ones are secret folds...
If you so dye one colour, then add another while it is still wet, the colours will change.
I have dyed shirts one day with a pattern, then let it set up, wash, then dyed a second pattern on the shirt. They do work out if the patterns make sense together.
aight just one last question i want a peace symbol on the front of mine so would this be the best way to achieve it in our opinion
do the peace symbol on the shirt first with the beighter of your colour then tye dye over it with a lighter mixture of your dye??? iam thinkin that would be the best way??
id spin it from the middle then put the rubber band on the outside and across it place it in the dyed water and it would all go purple coz the onlyt spots that woudltn be dyed would be the rubber band bits but yer i dunno aye
With the dipping style dying, it is the tight knots that keed the dye out and give the pattern.
With this injection style, it can depend on the fold or spin.
Folding and tying would probobly be better than spinning for the dip style of dye applying.
One good thing is to get an old cotton sheet and cut out a good sized square... tie it or spin it as you are thinking, then dip it. See what it turns out like before a real shirt.
hey just a quick question iam gonna be tye dyeing some shirts tommorow and want to know instead of squirting it on there with a bottle could i just place it in a bucket of the die with everything the exact same and still get that white and coloured spiral look or will it all be the colour i put in the bucket?
wow! that looks so amazing! whenever i tie dye i usually get to anxious and have to open it up to see what it looks like. next time i am definatly going to leave them in plastic bags like you did.
With these dyes, i hope to wait a full week... but most often I only make about five days.
Another option with the Procion dyes is heating the material up after dying - in a plastic bag gently steamed or medium in the microwave for short busts. (You do not want to boil the shirt in the microwave, just get it steaming hot).
Absolutely Bloody Brilliant! Just what I was looking for! It's so much easier to understand when you see it being done rather than reading the instructions alone!
thanks for the video I have a bunch of cotton shirts that were just sitting in my room I'll try my best to zest the up.., Im curious what do you do with all the dyed shirts? How did you become this tie dyed specialist?
i find the RIT dye i am using, when trying this effect, just beads and runs off from where i am trying to dye, i know im not using the best thing to put it on with, but i was wondering if it was the dye, or if i wasnt close enough to the material, or what it was.
Sounds like the dye is not penetrating the material at all.
It is always good that the shirt is damp already (not wet, just damp).
If there is a "screen" or picture, that can effect the dye area too. The shirt is best to be cotton - some polyester blends will beed off and not penetrate.
Try a couple other types of material strips as a test...
Powder to water, with salt and a bit of Urea... I do add soda ash to the dye mix at the very last moment. The "raw" shirts are put in the wash with soda ash - then spin cycle but not a rinse cycle. Some people do not add the soda ash to the actual dye, but I prefer that way.

I have used RIT and a few other dyes. I had the same issue. It looks good until you rinse.
These Procion MX dyes I use now are a bit more expensive, and a bit more to set up... but the results are well worth it.
Maybe try steaming the shirt after it is dyed (leave it tied up in a bag and put it over a steaming pot of water or in the microwave -on medium- for a couple minutes till it heats up steamy inside. Then let it cool and rinse it.
check out FACEBOOK: "Addicted To Tie Dying" for more.
These are PROCION MX dyes. They stay on for a minimum three days. I like to go for a week though - but they can also be sped up with the application of heat (like steaming them in a bag).
Thanks .... very helpful :)

@Joseeskates619
Go online and search for Procion MX dyes for sale...
Or go to Facebook Àddicted to Tie Dying`, there are some links there for mail order.
There are other dyes you may find in a craft shop or art supply place too.

dude but do i really have to leave it sittting for days in a bag? cuz im impatient
manraydudeful 1 year ago
@manraydudeful
These dyes you can also heat them up and it will set the dye.
I blast them thirty seconds in the microwave once on each side and let them cool (still in the bag)...
Not all dyes need time - I just find time makes these dyes a bit nicer.
Two days is about normal - I always go three or four though.

Hi! Thanx 4 posting idk if i like the type of Tie-Dye u used. I dont think id b able to wait for it 2 cure all those days! But thanx!
lexymk 2 years ago
You can also use heat... get the shirt up to a steaming level and let it sit a bit like that... then the dye should be set enough to rinse out.
The waiting just seems to be a bit brighter and allows some more dye inter-mixing.
WolfEchoes 2 years ago
mine came out with a lot of dots of colour instead of a pattern..what did i do wrong?
uwarules 3 years ago
That usually is because of the penetration.
Not enough dye was reaching the middle of the folds.
Try increasing the amount of dye you are putting on - especially on the first side you do, once you flip it, you can add a bit less.
Don't give up!
Try again for sure; that is a common "trouble".
WolfEchoes 3 years ago
thanks dude. great design
lvperalta 3 years ago
good video dude, thanks. how long exactly should they cure in the bags?
uwarules 3 years ago
I would go three days minimum... seven is max.
You could also try gentle heat to bring the shirts in the bag up to a steam level...
Not all dye needs the heat or time - but many do... and it will not hurt anything anyways (only help colours blend).
Thanks and good luck!

These dyes are PROCION MX dyes.
A powder base with urea and sodium carbonate (soda ash) and salt.
They have been the best dye I have used to date - and I have tried many.
There is a video on FaceBook "Addicted To Tie Dying" that talks about these Procion dyes in particular.
Thanks !
WolfEchoes 3 years ago
ohh ok, thankyouu! (:
browniee72 3 years ago
do you have to leave it for a few days?
HSCskates 3 years ago
These dyes you either wait, or heat them gently in a plastic bag.
The steam from heating bonds the dye into the shirt.
Waiting works best for Procion MX dye, it allows colour to blend and also becomes more vivid and bright.
Not all dyes need time, but many need heat.

Yes, the style of applying makes a big difference.
There is a video on FaceBook "Addicted To Tie Dying" group that shows four different dye application effects on the same style of spin.
That video will help you see the differences.

asianbarbiejudie 3 years ago
If you mean waiting for the dye to set being too long... you can also use heat in place of time.
Warm or steam the shirts in a plastic bag.
You can use a microwave - but short bursts so you do not boil the water in the shirt.
Not all dyes need this method, but most dyes do set with heat.
Please message me about "spirit theme", I would like to hear more about that.

Thanks for the nice comment.
I have had dye trouble like that many times.
Often it is either red or yellow only.
Sometimes I will overconcentrate those colours just in case.
I would bet it was the dye and not anything you did.
One thing you could try is leaving the dye longer before rinse - or try a bit of warming to steam the shirt a bit.
I hope you have better luck next try!

What you could try is having the shirt damp with a salty water mix... but maybe you will not need it for your dye type.
Sometimes you can look your dye up online and see what others have to say about using it...
Hope it works for you!
WolfEchoes 3 years ago
It should work... depending on your dye type.
But purple is a very strong colour, so keeping the shades right may not be so easy.
The salt is important for the dye type I am using (procion-mx), but it may not be as important for other cold water dyes.
The salt helps bind the dye into the material.
With these dyes, it is part of the mix itself.
WolfEchoes 3 years ago

shaun69er5 3 years ago
The style you are talking is the more traditional.
I have never tried dipping a "spun" shirt... so i am not sure how well it would work.
The injection dying (this type in the video) is more precise and better for more complex designs.
Both ways are very cool though, just different results.

after you spin it into a circle. How do you keep it like that when ur dying?
whichiswho 3 years ago
Sometimes that is the hardest part...
I use string that I tie around it - the outter edge circumfrance.
Sometimes you have to get someone to help... once you do it a bit, it gets easier.
You might use elastics too - but not so tight the material squishes or is bunched up - just enough to hold it tight and solid.

can this be done the same way on black shirts?
or is it only white?
halflivezombie 3 years ago
For these colours to show, white is best.
But... I have done a thing called reverse dying - where I use bleach instead of dye on a black shirt.
I spin or fold the shirt, tie it... and use a an applicator filled with bleach in place of a dye one.
The trick is not to leave the bleach too long or it will eat the shirt.
If you go on Facebook to the group "Addicted To Tie Dying", there is a picture of it.
Thanks for watching!

It took a long time to find these dyes. I tried so many other types.
Some people are very secretive of this stuff... which I never understand.
These are PROCION MX dyes... and are easy to use - they do take a bit to get set up, but are worth the effort.
You could try RIT or DYLON dyes... but they will not be as bright as these can be.
There are other dyes too - some all natural.

I was trying to get into tie dying---this is the most informative video that I have seen. I was wondering If I could dye other stuff besides thin cotton, like thicker material, like white jeans or something like that? Thanks!
brittanymack 3 years ago
Yes!
Jeans are great to dye... except they are so thick. It is tougher to fold them into anything too wild, and the dye penetration is a bit harder.
I have done jeans and a thick cotton jacket; they worked out alright.
Remember that some dyes do not work on some materials - while some work better on one type but not another.
Great luck to you!

hey man awesome vid...
i just started tie dyeing and stuff
but after its done and i rinse it a lot of dye runs off
any suggestions on what im doing wrong?
Vernorsssssssoda 4 years ago
it can depend on the dye type.
these dyes also have runoff, but the "set" dye stays on the material. Does the dye stay on the material, or do they get pale as you rinse?
Look online for info on your brand of dye is one thing.
These ones, it is the soda-ash and salt that make the dye stick. Mix the dyes strong also...

Hi
check out FACEBOOK: "Addicted To Tie Dying" for more.
These are PROCION MX dyes. They stay on for a minimum three days. I like to go for a week though - but they can also be sped up with the application of heat (like steaming them in a bag).
