I think vootie44's a bit unkind & that Nina Hagen interprets this well - her stage costume is also very suitable to the number. There are many different ways: Teresa Stratas, Georgia Brown, Annie Ross e. g. all sing Weill songs beautifully but completely differently. Thanks for the upload.

Title should have been "Surabaya Johnny"- I was looking for the Dietrich classic ("Johnny, wenn de geburtstag hast, etc"), instead I found another song that I love. Having said that, dear Nina doesn't quite get it done here. Lotte Lenya and Uta Hagen come out way ahead.

ich muss sagen, dass nina eigentlich ne tolle stimmfarbe für diesen song hat, aber der song nicht wirklich zu ihr passt.

What is square about it. That is the song as written. It was not made up for a Nina Hagen punk concert. It was written as part of a musical show by one of the great composers of the century. She is lucky she gets a chance to sing it - and she did it very well. I will give her that. Most of her stuff is good but she acts as if she is spitting on it when she sings the songs, they don't seem to resonate with her at all. Pity when she could be so good.

This is so cool. This same song was a hit for also German perfomer Lotte Lenya in the 30s or 40s. Lotte also had a sort of hit with the song the Doors did that goes "please show me the way to the next whisky bar...."

The Doors actually took that from Weill's 1930 opera "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny." I heard that piece for the first time a few weeks ago and I had to do a double take (I guess you do that with listens too? Haha, I don't know.) because I had seen it a few months ago in the opera.
