@akvmusic The mic is pretty good, if you are not happy the only way is to use something like a Zoom H1.

i just ordered this camera, will work out to be just over £100 in total. is that a good price? me and my brother were arguing between this and the s95 but i persuaded him because it's cheaper, with very similar specs. i said that if he wanted semi professional photos then he should hold off the s95 and get a DSLR later on. i have bought it from jessps now. £130 then £20 cashback from canon so total = £110.

Thanks for the quick response. I take it from your response that the S95 is better in quality, sharpness overall look compared to the 220HS despite the 220 have a CMOS sensor? What about the video, is the s95 better. Does it AF during video or does it lock-off until you stop recording. Thanks

Hi all, I was the one who originally commented about the zooming noise. Yes, it DOES produce a noise, but should NOT be too evident in your video.

The camera i had in possession was actually faulty and Canon confirmed that my camera was producing zooming noise greater than their documented specifications.

I got a replacement and it's now all good.

The zooming noise is very soft and should only be slightly hearable when zooming in a very quiet environment.

Happy purchasing! I recommend this!

Hi, just bought this camera 2 days ago. I tested it out and there's a problem; I want to see if you have the same issue.

When I optically zoom-in while taking a vid, the lens makes a slight noise, causing that noise to be recorded onto the vid

When I zoom-out, that "slight noise" gets even louder than when I zoom-in.

Though the lens' noise is quite faint to the naked ear while filming, it's quite hearable when vid is replayed in the camera w/ medium volume.

Is this normal or a faulty camera?

220HS pros: GREAT optics for such a compact camera!

220HS cons: Video optical zoom buzzing noise, and optical zoom for video can't be disabled for only digital zoom; Also, this camera produces a slight "flash shadow" on the bottom-right corner when taking photos on white surfaces in a pitch-dark environment due to the close distance b/t cam & lens

I'm really sad to see that in all the reviews I've seen of this camera, that no one has thought to mention that this camera can only record up to 10 minutes in HD quality before automatically ending the recording. Lots of people are buying this camera for Vlogging, so I'd think this would be something they'd want to know.

Hi Dave, great review as usual. Just one thing I thought I should point out. I was confused between the Ixus 220 HS and the Sony DSC WX7, and though I liked the Ixus there was one issue which kept me from buying it... the placement of the flash... its at the top left of the camera and is easily obstructed when holding the camera. Needless to say it was quite annoying. Ended up going for the WX7, which made me kind of sad cause I really really like this camera otherwise...

@seansmacintosh The best solution for hat is to get something like the H100 and sync the audio with the video track later when you edit it. You can set up a pretty simple rig to hold the camera and mic at the same time for not that much. May look a bit funny though lol.
