hey. i'm only telling you this because you said you don't know exactly what notes the iiieeeiiis are. the d sharp is actually a d flat. i really enjoyed your videos.
I gotta play this wedding reception and they just appended this song with a week to go. Any suggestions as far as breaking it down and learning it as fast as possible? Your vid is helpful, just wondering if you've any additional advice. I've been playing it in E like yours....
Yikes! Def. hope it wasn't a statement on the current relationship of the bride and groom. I've played Tori at weddings before but just CfG, Gold Dust, and Horses (one reception was in a renovated barn made for wedding ceremonies... couldn't resist). :-)
umm the cooling part.... i think tori plays it in Cm Bb Ab.... or somethink like that... its sounds closer to it anyway on my piano... and i know you play be ear so try it out playing those chords.... also i think on WTSF if you watch her hands she starts in Cm....
Thank you. For the verses, the chords in ASF are b-flat minor, f minor (optional 7th), Eb Major. Sometimes they can be inverted for effect. Chorus is f minor, Db Major, f minor 7 (sometimes I invert to put the Ab note in the bass), Eb Major.
The bass line for iieee is: E, F#,G,E',G,E,A,B,C....That bassline takes up 2 measures and repeats for a while until you here the distorted string in the treble that is: B(below middle C),E, F# and then gain ending on G instead of F#.. That is the best I can do in script.... I taught piano for a few years. Next Time my sister is over I can have her hold the camera.. I am familiar with most of Tori's stuff though I am seriously out of practice.
I literally sit my laptop on top of my piano and watch you play Tori Amos (by far my favorite music artist) and learn how to play her songs. You are a great teacher! I was wondering if you had the intro to Flying Dutchman in any of your videos? Thanks!!
Thank you. I don't but the next time I make a How to Play Famous Tori riffs, I will include the intro to Flying Dutchman and the intro to Doughnut Song. Good suggestion!
Thank you very much. I didn't get too into detail on the ways to harmonize the riff, but if in the first two parts, she tends to add G# and A, in the third part, it's G natural and A, and then at the end, it's E. It's a wonderful song so good luck playing it! :-)
Me too, we actually were talking together in a dream I had recently, I had her phone number and we were sharing notes on life. I recently tried to purchase a sorta fairytale online but since my printer isn't working it wouldn't allow me to view online and I had to cancel the order. I'll have to seek out some book formats, I just hope the music relates, as often it's too simplistic and you miss the magic. You do a great job, and I've enjoyed spending evenings and nights listening to you.
I've heard very similar things about the ASF sheet music in particular. Some of her piano suite pieces are supposed to be good though (like Over It). I appreciate very much what you say about listening to me. I added two playlists yesterday that will go through the videos of Under the Pink and FtCH in their entirety, so I hope that helps make things more convenient. They're in the channel page if you click on my user name. A million thanks for your kind words.
Thank you! I love playing Tori very much so I am happy to share the music with everyone so we can all enjoy her stuff. She's my favorite songwriter on the planet right now. :-)
This is great stuff thank you so much. I play piano and was v disappointed with the sheet music for 1000 Oceans and A Sorta Fairytale I bought, seemed simplistic and the right hand fit the melody exactly. Tori uses syncopated hands which I enjoy. You use a different key here for A Sorta Fairytale so was wondering if you had a copy of the score or if this was by ear? Much appreciated, your work is brilliant. Neil in Los Angeles.
Thank you. The key here for ASF is how it's played both on the album and live. It's in f minor and begins on the b-flat minor chord, but it may be transcribed in a different key. I learn everything by ear so I haven't seen the sheet music.
No prob on the Winter thing. It was just a small bonus cause there's a tutorial out there for the Winter intro. To answer your question, yes, I know Crucify; there's a vid that should come up if you do a search for BPK and Crucify or click on the link to all the songs on my channel page. I can play every Tori album track and have videos up for almost all of them. Tutorials are up for China, Past the Mission, Scarlet's Walk, and this one. More tutorials are coming soon. ;-)
I have a private tutorial for Bouncing off Clouds that had some static in the audio (and was filmed somewhat hastily) but most of the info is there. If you want, send me a friend request and/or subscription (not sure which) and I'll configure it for you to view it and send you the link.
Hey I was wondering if you knew how to play "Mother" by Tori Amos I've been looking all over for the music for it but I can't seem to find it.. do you know how to play that one?
Yes, I have a vid posted. I'd put the link here but youtube doesn't let you put links in comments anymore. If you do a search for BPK and Mother, it should come up. :-)
YW! The notes she sings in iieee delve through frequencies that aren't 100% in tune with the "Western Harmonic scale" that we find on a piano/keyboard. Although this vid is just for riffs, the chords I play for iieee there roughly are e+b+f#, e+b+f#, c+g+a, c+f#+d#. In the third section, I put the c# in the iieee to create that tension with the bass (c). I have a vid where I play the full song, if you search for BPK & iieee.
You're welcome and I hope so! I'm glad people take the time to visit the channel here and listen to the different arrangements of Tori music so I'm glad to give back. :-)
Hi! Thank you so much for teaching these riffs! You're the only one on youtube who's willing to teach Tori's music...thanks so much...now I can play a bit! =)
