I've met dozens of pit bulls, I have friends who have taken them in as strays and others who have bought expensive pedigrees, and they're all the sweetest dogs you can have. Smart, loyal, funny, with these fantastic muscular bodies. I travel too much to have a dog, but if I didn't they would be my first choice as a pet. I live in NYC, and if there never was a place with a worse reputation for these dogs... it's total bull---t! They were the dog of choice in this country decades ago...love them!

I was nearly attacked by the neighbor's pit mix once,and if it hadn't been for the stray Rottweiler that liked to hang out at my house, I would have been. but all the other pit bulls I have been around are such sweet animals. The only thing a really good pit dog would rather do than fight, is sit in your lap. The classic line is that " a pit dog can do what any other dog can do, and then he can whip that dog. Too many people confuse mean with tough. If you are really tough, you don't have to be mean. Just as pit dogs, the toughest men I ever knew were also the most gentle, if they were allowed to be. Good men and good pit dogs are gentle because they want to be, not because they have to be.

@42sundown...well bred pit dogs are incredibly gentle. They have a super high pain threshold which helps. If a lot of dogs get their tail stepped on they'll snap or bite a kid, but a good bulldog will just wag or pull it away. My kids and grandkids were raised with and by pit dogs. Never in 50 years with pit dogs have one of us ever been bitten intentionally. I have been bitten twice when playing and lost my place and put a hand where my dog was going for on a hide or an....see#3

For training it was roadwork, treadmill, flirt (spring) pole, roundtable, or swimming. Dogs were bred to be gentle. Hard to handle maneaters.
