I believe it's in the number of sounds, the number of patches and filters you can run it through, and the size of the keyboard itself in some cases. I'm no expert, but from personal observations, these seem to be the differences.
Nord Lead and lead 2x have the same sound engine.. the 2x has more presets and more memory..that's about it. The Lead 3 however has a completely different sound engine.. it sounds way different. They all rock!!
@theveg99 Not true about the sound engine. Original NLead sound different than Lead2. Original Nord hasn't distorsion/ring mod nor sine wave, and other minor changes in routing.. Lead2 is a bit 'modern sounding' while the original is fatter in the low end and more similar to an analog one (old crunchy 16 bit dacs and maybe software re-design). Lead3 is way too different from both.
Digital which now has the power to emulate a wider range than analog did. Disruptive anti-aliasing can now be controlled effectively to give the analog "warmth", but most just choose not to have it, because EVERYONE else uses it. Get with the times.
Your argument doesent even make sense. Digital has the power to emulate a wider range than analog does? What does that mean when every digital synth tries to emulate analog sound??...
A digital synth is by far more versatile, but the sound is still digital, NOT analog, and anyone who owns an analog synth (not you) would know that difference.
Hi, how much did you sell the NORD LEAD 3 for? Also, which is better for performances, the NORD LEAD 3 or 2? I just got a NL 3. Its amazing. Please get back to me when you can.
I've a Nord Lead III and the Rack Nord Lead 2X..In the past I also owned the Nord lead 2 when it first came out but swapped it with my mate for his Juno60!!
So, the Lead III and the Lead 2x are actually very different sounding machines, probably due to the fact they were designed by two different teams at Clavia..
The presets suck on the III and the 2X but as has been mentioned, both synths are very intuitive.
I think the III is probably more sonically versatile than the 2X but (cont..)
...the 2X has a bigger bottom end sound. The III can do FM-type sounds, the 2X can also but it's not the same......
I think both machines compliment each other as they are so different sonically. I think the Nords are some of the best VAs out there. I also owned a Novation KStation which I hated the sound of and actually gave it my mate.
I paid about $1500 (acutally 1500SwissFrancs) 2nd hand for the Lead III over twelve months ago.
I sold it for about $1500.00(USD). I also had a NL2x. They are both great! As GNeuman stated below they are very different and thus makes it hard to pick one over the other. I have to say I will probly get another NL3, but I'm trying to get my hands on a Korg MS200B first.
interesting how or why you want an ms2000b ( i have one myself, along with shedloads of other gear), when youve had both nord leads...
I had a NL2X for 3 days, and just thought it sounded too thin, and a bit basic for the price, so got rid of it. the ms2000 imho, is much richer sounding, and the step sequencer, and mod buss really give it a lot of oomph as well. Its great for scoring work.
Got the MS2000, got the Little Phatty and my Nord WAVE is on the way! I agree with you though, I'm not planning on getting another NL2x.. it's not a bad synth, but it just doesn't give me the sound I'm looking for now.
I have a Nord Lead 1 and an ms2000. I always thought that the NL1 sounded way better than the ms2000. Is there such a big difference between the ms2000 and the ms2000b? Or NL1 and the NL2X?
I always thought the NL1 sounded much fatter and richer than the ms2000.
I kept my ms2000 and got rid of my nl2x, cause on neutral eq via the desk AND through monitors OR using my trusty senheiser hd-25's (the best for monitoring, but not cheap), the nl2x sounded surprisingly thin. the ms2000, has much more mod routings and the step sequencer, plus a greater plethora of waveforms AND the vocoder, add to its value and usefulness. Ive used it on tons of scores , idents and stuff. Ebay prices have crept up on those to reflect this.
I played this keyboard 4 years ago. it sounded very well, but it was toooo expensive. One of the reasons why, it's coz NL3 have 360 degrees knobs. Actually, knobs raised the price so high.
i can´s believe why someone sells his nl3....for me one if the best sounding synth. crystall clear, powerful and really easy to programm....many, many club hits are made with this machine....i programmed a set for it and i know it for sure that this machine is the one dreams are made of...
I beg to differ, I too also own a NL2x. Of all the synths/keyboards in my set up - JP8000, Roland V-Synth GT, Roland AX1, Nord Lead 2x, Andromeda A6, apart from the Andromeda which has slightly longer keys than normal, all the rest of the keyboards have exactly the same size keys.
Its totally down to the individual, and what sounds they are looking for.
He might have wanted something with more sonic sound capabilities than the Lead, i'd imagine he made an informed choice on this one, especially after he actually owned a Nord Lead! ;)

Yeah, your getting rid of this piece of junk for something better. Almost anything is better! You can't judge a synth by its cover.

Hey mate,
Sounds like you know a bit about NL3's.
I've just got one but can't use it for a bit.
Do you know if Rhodes sounds are on it? If not, do you know if I can get patches for these types of more retro sounds?
Cheers

Did the 3 have full length keys (compared to the 2X) or is it just the camera angle making them look longer?

The 2x has full size keys. It's just the angle of the camera makes them look smaller.
