Hi, I was wondering if there is any precautions to choosing wood for whittling to make pipes, spoons, etc. I know that some woods are considered toxic but I'm not sure if this means I need to learn to identify all different types of trees for safety reasons before I start learning bushcraft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Yew,laburnum,Olive,Sumack,Rhodedendron, these are the main ones to worry about.
Literature and information on toxidity is hard to find and often misleading.
Olive is well known to cause lip and mouth sores - Laburnum the toxins are more in the seeds and leaves but like yew it is present , unlikely to kill. Sumak contains what appears to be an anesthetic - Rhodedendron made me blind in one eye for several hours and was very painful - just a tiny speck.
one of the reasons i made these is to see what practical applications can come up from simply letting go - "art" is an excuse for a lot of things, so perhaps this is not just art.
i dont really have the proper curved knives or anything to make a spoon but i'll soon have a nice little mora knife so i think i might take a bit of silver birch wood and have a go at making a spoon, maybe tie a bit of sandpaper round a bouncy ball or something to smooth out the bowl, primitive but i figure it should work, enjoyed the video too and you have a very comforting voice by the way :)
Dont get me wrong i appreciate the beauty and skill of this work... but i can't imagine using any (except maybe the snake one for some reason) to tuck into a nice bowl of Heinz cream of tomato.....
Extraordinary pieces of wooden art you are making there! I haven't seen something like that anywhere else. Beautifly gentle curves and shapes that are going a bit offset in to Abstract way of looking at piece of cultery. To simplify Amaizing job!
this guy is truly talented and obviously has a deep passion for carving wood. i've carved maybe 3 simple spoons and recognize how difficult it is! he is surely motivated! Thanks for the video craftyman!
Very talented craftsman, but I'd have to agree with Gan. Why do so many craftsmen/artists have to go to the "philosophy" or "deeper" into it. They are spoons, very cool spoons but I don't think they need to be explored. My video for this would be about 10 seconds long. "hey I made some spoons, thanks for watching."
Modern living tends to make people shallow - the questions we used to ask ourselves we no longer do, we simply turn on the box and it all goes away - everything is disposable with a limited life.
So why bother with Philosophies?
BECAUSE IDEAS ARE WHAT WE ARE MADE OF.
Everything we do or say comes from an idea - if you foreget that then YOU ARE DISPOSABLE TOO.
I certainly dont want to be.
If you watched the video instead of simply scanning it you might get more out of it.
@craftsmank but at the same time inovation has made the lives of so mnay simpler i bet you use machines to make them if you made them by hand that way you have a craft a skill so i may say that will make you disposeable and you are only as worthless as you think you are so in my eyes i am not disposable i am reusable
ive been in the woodworking world for 35 years - for quite a while turning was my forte, (still is but only hand copyturning, or component making)but that became a little tame as there were so many "experts." Spoons, had and still does have vry few exceptional talents, the possibilities are mostly unexplored - boored? only boores are boored. (an academic point perhaps).
Perhaps youd like to have a go,particurlarily as the field is still wide open.
those beautiful, it opens your mind, and i was picking up wood crafts, and i was gunna make a wistle as my first wood craft, but i think i will make a spoon now, ty
Great work, and a valuable lesson in the need to explore all avenues of design within a 'simple' subject to gain a greater understanding of form. Love your work, and many thanks for showing it.
with extreme spoons, that makes it some 40 plus - well my target was 100 so really no excuse - well cept for its snowing here, the car needs fixing, so does the barn and ive just got a dream commision - Rightiho.
Hay nice job man!!

Many different kinds, the letters are made from American Tulipwood, the ducks are mulberry, the cylinders mulberry, and the bowls laburnum.
