  • One out of four for trainability? I met a 6 year old Basset named Baxter who quickly became "my dog" even though he didn't belong to me (he belonged to my boyfriend's dad) and when I met him he only knew the command "sit". In about a year I taught him "lay down", "roll over", "stop", "stay", and my two personal favorites "out of the kitchen", and "out of the road" all of which I merely had to say in a calm tone at a normal volume for him to (almost always) instantly obey.

  • You just have to be consistent. When I told him to do something and he refused, I made him do it anyway even if it meant I had to physically pick him up and put him on his bed and then lay on top of him to get him to lay down. He not only learned how to do what I wanted him to do, but that I was the alpha dog and that he had better listen because he was going to have to do it anyway.

  • have americans bred bassets to have a little bit tighter skin? they seem to have more loose skin here in europe :D

  • ROSCO IS MY HEART! <3

  • "Needs rescuing from walks", I have a feeling that guy has never known a basset. Mine freak out when it is time for a walk and love getting exercise.

  • My basset loved to run and play. Rigged up a collar with a long leash attached to my wheelchair. He drug me everywhere. Only problem was, he'd get diverted and try to go off-roading. Wheelchairs aren't made for that, so I had to use the brakes. Of course if there was something irresistible, we'd go that way and with paws that size no brakes would stop him. Sure miss that dog.

  • mine loved to run, play with his toys, play soccer! ahaha he loved to run with his golden friend!! they are everything but lazy!

  • @a183r70 agree mine is very very playful ,tug is her favorite game and she runs all over the place

  • i must buy one

  • The Basset Hound owns you? That is why you need to practice PACK leadership.

  • I don't quite understand why they are lazy an stubborn dogs. They were breed as hunt dogs, no? Maybe during the time their personality changed, because I just cannot see a hunt dog that used to follow a hunter while he was ridding his horse, being now a coach potato and not obeying a command. I am convinced that you can train his lazy ass with good results.

  • "most bassets only want to rescue themselves...from exercise" --- sooo true for our 14 (soon to be 15) year old basset!! he requires a lot of patience but one can't help but love him. he's "the" one constant in our household! :D

  • Who thinks I should get one if I want a companion dog???

  • @caitlinborley

I've got one and they are wonderful dogs. Very friendly, great with children, easygoing and just love to be with there master/mistress.

As everyone says they can be quite stubborn and lazy but they are still great companions. If you are the type who like sto take your dog with you when you're cycling or jogging then maybe it's not for you but they are a glorious breed.

  • @tomorocko I want one now x I'm not the person who has even average energy. I'm a couch potato, love to read, I'm just a very calm person.

  • @tomorocko Maybe i just have a rare 1 but mine loves running and going for walks. We take her and our other dog to the park all the time and she goes crazy if she knows she gets to walk

  • ): i want one sooo bored but i live in a apmarment

  • I love my basset hound Chuy Alejandro

  • YO AMO A MI BASSET HOUND "PRINCESS " ES HERMOSA MUY LINDA ♥

  • YO AMO A MI BASSET HOUND "PRINCESS " ES HERMOSA MUY LINDA ♥

  • I LOVE my basset Hound (:

  • not athletic? My Basset hikes runs and plays all day every day! He is all muscle and is one tough SOB

"is that a beagle" I hate when people ask that!

  • they are funy cute and friendly

  • my BASSET HOUND satchel and my yellow lab newton who sadly died are my fav friends in the world :)

  • Bassets don't have to be athletes, they only have to be cute-and they do it better than any breed:)

  • I love how they forget to say how they nearly always get chronic back problems because they are bred to have such long backs, stumpy feet, and heavy sagging skin! 3/4 for health? I dont think so!

  • @peterperoxide1 I can just tell u from my experience that my female bassethound Sara is nearly 14 and has never had a back problem in her life, in fact she still playis like a puppy. If u dont believe me you can see in my videos there is a video of her very recent (2 months ago)

  • cutest dogs ever.

  • lol rescue themselves from exercise

  • Why is "Football" listed as a tag for this video? LOL!!! XD

  • i'd really like to have one of these dogs

  • the 6 people who dislike this video, have obviously never had the joy of owning or being around these dogs much.

  • Thats the funniest dog i ever met! :D.

  • My basset is very energetic and not fat, I know that it will be bad for her health if she will get fat so I give her just the right amount of food. She likes to go out so when she see me holding her collar she gets excited and wants me to put it to her.

She is smart and stubborn. She knows when you are happy or angry or just faking it. She barks and play a lot. We always play fetch. :D

  • Every basset I have ever owned have been energetic handfuls. I don't know what they're talking about with "coaxing" into a walk.

That being said, I love my bassets :3

  • Love these dogs. :)

  • My Basset can be stubborn, but he's trained pretty well so far. The toughest times to give a voice command when he's laying down; it's as if he's responding like a tennager telling their parents, "5 more minutes, OK." LOL! As long as he's on his feet he's good to go.

  • my basset has inly barked like 10 times in 8 years of living.

  • @TheTrihorn1 your lucky!! VERY lol

  • My Bassett is adorable but boy she's a handful. She's a year old and she loves walks and loves to run all over the yard and she can tackle you to the ground. She also sits out on the diving board and barks just to hear her own voice.

  • I've had six bassets and im still loving them, hopefully soon i can get another one of these "lounge lizard" hounds. Great breed for a family as well.

  • bassets are one of the smartest dogs i trained mine to track lost people and he went ten for ten. always got his man and he loved every minute of the chase, but playing fetch is for other breeds and i agree the hounds on this video need to loose some pounds my male was 62 lean pounds

  • these bassets in this video are all out of shape mine is lean and clean and it can keep up with my sisters lab

  • @BlackOut55555666666 How cruel! They are pure breed dogs, why would someone like you want them to be extinct? Cruelty I guess is your wish, and another is the bad intention of cross breeding bulldogs and terriers (pitbulls) for dog fights for example. Pitbulls have good form, but what's wrong is the intention/tradition for them to fight. Dog fights and dog killing, you should be against those instead.

  • the owners of bruno the basset hound caught him in the kitchen , he apparently ate there whole dinner ham , he was quite the eater lol

  • I love my Basset Soooooo much.....best breed 'for me' EVER!

  • i have a 14 year old Basset, Lush. He is the greatest friend i have ever had. Will NEVER have another breed......

  • i got a 5 year old named buddy love, he is stubourn but he is a great dog, bassets are my favorite dogs now. my basset is quite the athelite though, i've seen him run 25-30 mph

  • i have 4 basset and mine all work to a whistle ie they come back when whistled they can be very stubborn but you have to be just as much as they are ,it takes time and patience to train them like it does most dogs they are a big dog on short legs they should never be fat you should be able to feel their ribs when you run your hand over them

they are working dogs and built for endurance so will walk for miles they are great family pets and better when in a pack be it dogs or family

  • Mine aren't lazy either, but it does take forever to get them from point a to point b b/c they have to stop and smell everything. Mine minds very well, I tell her to hold the couch down for a few hours, and she does it w/out any complaints. I tell her to eat the treat, she does it no complaints again. As long as I don't ask her to fetch we do pretty good. They may not be the star athlete like out Britany Spaniel, but to me bassets are perfect, wouldn't trade em for the world!

  • Maybe your basset hound needs to be coaxed for a walk. But I own 2 now and have been an owner of this dogg for quite some time. They do not need coaxing to go for a walk, my hounds actually love walks like a pot head loves his weed. I click my leash and they run with excitement to go outside. Maybe your lazy and they feed off that, but you cannot generalize a breed like this.

  • I love my basset, Sophie! She is much skinner than the bassets in the video. She doesn't get too much exercise, but we don't feed her too much. She is soo cute and her howling is soo funny and entertaining. Sometimes it gets a little annoying when she sees a worker outside, but her compassion and cuteness is well worth it!! :)

  • Those bassets look bored s***less. They would rather be in a field sniffing for rabbits

  • Not true.. Bassets are typically stubborn however there is an easy way round it. SAUSAGES!!!. My family have two bassets.

They love long walks. That involves plenty sniffing and running about in fields chasing rabbits.

I play chase with the dogs especially the youngest, he jumps about like a Jack Russell.

  • This video isn't true, yes they are stubborn like any other animal, they aren't lazy or fat this women doesn't take care of her bassets. i was walking my late basset (fred) when a guy came to close for freds comfort, you would have thought i owned a pitbull by how fast he went to attack. bassets aren't normally considered watch dogs but they aren't lazy selfish fatsos like this video suggest

  • I agree! This lady has let her Bassets get too fat! Then she wonders why they dont want to get out and do anything. I have had 2 Basset Hounds, they were both very playful. They did lay around some, but not anymore than other breeds of dogs that I have owned. I have read that it isnt healthy to allow Bassets to get that fat, it puts way too much stress on their backs.

  • they are wrong about trainability they arent the easiest but i think they deserve at least 2 bones in that category

  • none of these are true about my basset flash, he can run faster then me and im 18

  • I wish my basset's were lazy... mine are going non-stop!

  • my basset is very active and love to walk.

  • I disagree with this video quite a bit when it comes to activity. I have had two bassets in my life and they are NOT lazy as the video indicates. They are active dogs who love to take the lead when going for a walk, and boy do they love going for walks. Yes, they do lay around a lot if you don't take them for walks, but once they see the leash come out of the closet they are on fire and raring to go! I believe their level of activity is directly related to the owners level of activity.

  • yes that happend to me both my bassets were a year and a half when i got them about a year apart some people should just not get pets if they cant stick with them

  • My best friend has a Basset Hound named Jasper. He is 12 years old and is red and white. He weighs 40 lbs and is registered with APRI. She paid $800 for him and he is worth every penny! Jasper is so handsome. I'm in love with him. For 12 years old he is doing very well. He eats Artemis Maximal Dog, which is one of the highest quality dog foods available.

  • My hound girl is 8 months at the time of this comment. July 2010 - She loves walks, chasing toys, and generally zipping around. I think it's more the dog adapts to the owner's lifestyle. They just like to hang with people. They will be as active or as mellow as you are.

  • best breed ever !!! but don't let your bassethound become fat!!! EXERCISES !!!!

I've got two femalles from 11 and 10 and I walk 2 km with them ever day from the 1st of january from the 31st of december.

I don't want another breed... they're just like childs... UNBELIEVEBABLE !!!

  • these bassets in the video are extremely fat. I do not think they should be so.

  • I love bassets!

  • This video perpetuates a misnomer about this breed. Any dog will become fat and lazy if you let it. With a proper diet of no table foods and a 5 minute walk twice a day any basset can remain healthy. I don't get the lazy accusation, I have a 10 year old that is slim and active compared to the ones in this video.

    Best breed ever!

  • TOO COOL.....

  • I agree...the basset can be awesome hunters and if you let them become lazy couch dogs then they will be one. But get them in the woods or field lookin for rabbits and they will be very fit and obedient dogs!

  • I GOT CHASED BY TWO OF THESE DOGS DOWN MY STREET

  • SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Are you kidding me? The basset I know bolts out the door once it's open and has enough energy to walk all day if she wanted.

  • My brother has pure breed basset hound named cosmo, and hes his x box playin buddy lol

  • Loved the video. I have a basset. Actually, I once read, that they are very very inteligent, because they have the hability to think and make a choice. I totally agree with this. Other dogs, are good for other habilities. Basset Hounds will always be my favorite dogs. I just LOVE them.

  • I have a bassett, she's wonderful. There is nothing funnier than standing behind a running bassett---that wiggling butt cracks me up every time!

  • my basset loves to go for a walk and play with other dogs, i love my basset is the best dog ever!!!!!!!!11

  • Basset seems to be an Adorable dog, while also having such character (almost like an aire of nobility).

I can't get over that plump body and short stocky legs, SO CUTE!!!

  • I can't wait to get one, their bark/howling doesn't seem as obnoxious as bigger dogs, I think its because they are so cute.

  • Re:video I've had 2 (pure bred) Bassets neither had a drool problem..now drinking their water - well thats another story lol...My second one lived to be 14 and lost her 2 years ago this coming April ...It was hard saying goodbye and I still miss her a lot

  • my basset is so hyperactive she is also very lazy, not forgetting stubborn!!!!!!!!!

  • my bassets name is Freda shes awesome.

  • I love Bassets!!! i also have a 2 yr old black+tan male. he is 17 inches tall and wieghs about 65 lbs. dont worry, he is healthy, he is just a big-boy!! his fav thing to do is wait by the door of the chicken coop where the chickens cant see him and when one walks out, he will chase it, but not being mean, just for fun. he has never hurt one of them. (well, except when one tried eating his food and he nipped it a little) lol

    His name is Dolittle.

  • Your words in summing up the Basset are oh so true!!! THEY ARE JUST THE BEST DOGS IN THE WHOLE WORLD, despite their stubborness and I have had them all my life and love them to bits!!!!

  • Wow, Dove O.o

  • What they said about having to be coaxed to go for a walk is a lie. If you even mention the word "walk" around my hounds, they will sing until you have the leash attached and they are out the door. Even the word "leash" gets them going. Bassets pick up on magic words very well, and they rarely let you off with just a warning.

  • I agree. My basset also gets really excited when she hears me grabbing the leash to take her for a walk. The problem is, she'll only get like half-way around the block before she gets tired and doesn't want to move any more. Then I have to drag her the rest of the way home. She also fights me the entire time and wants to go her own way. She's difficult.

  • @hoagmatt ..I agree mine both loved to walk..the bellow of their bark still echos in my ears

  • Basset---noun.

French for "short of stature, mighty of heart"

    :+)

  • I LOOOOVE MINE!! So lovable and I just smile everythime I see her!!! Best dog my family decided to buy! = )

  • My dog(Goliath) is the total opposite in personality. He is very hyper and very easy to train. I actually find it kind of funny seeing him with a bottle in his mouth playing keep away.. (:

  • Bassets are simply the best dogs ever! My basset "Loki" is almost two years old...

  • ya the commericals piss me off

  • I have a 5 month old basset, I read about them and decided this was the dog for my family....what we got is a beagle/chiwawa mix in a basset body. she is very hyper but I still like her

  • fuckin commercials!!!!!!

  • My basset hound (Noodles) is fairly active for a basset hound she does drool especially when we are cooking. She does not have a weight problem (yet) we take her on daily long walks. She only barks when playing or when someone is at the door.

  • Agreed! Bassetts are very vocal but (mine) doesn't bark a lot. Instead she "talks" to us. It's very cute :)!

  • I have a Bassett! Her name is Daisy :)! (she's 5 but we still call her a puppy!) She's very active for 4-6 hours and day and sleeps the rest of the time!! She's skinny, almost never drools! and!! She refuses to drag her ears in her water dish! (she's a prim madonna!). She is also very well trained :)! and the only time she barks is when someone is at the door- or there is a rabbit in the yard!

  • good video animal planet!. i have a basset and love it. i would do anythign for it even cut my dick off

  • @mcredsox16 Whoa...slow down there chief....

  • @mcredsox16 I doubt it but I gave you a thumbs up none the less! :)

  • @mcredsox16 marry me?

  • @mcredsox16 too funny! thx!!!

  • God talk about massive feet! My basset purposely steps on my feet when he walks near me, always hurts. Our's has never had a drooling problem, and even though he's slow on walks, he's actually really active. But god does he smell, he sneaks into our compost pile all the time and just rolls and rolls.

  • Interesting fact: Basset Hounds have heavier bone, in proportion to their total size, than any other breed. Adorable dogs but they always look so sad with that droll expression.

  • Our Basset doesn't drool hardly at all. She does however steal food, knock the trash over and is just all around naughty, but I love her and for all her bad behavior her love makes up for it..lol

  • they are NOT quite!!!!!!!!

  • I love them and thinking about getting one but i hear they bark very LOUD. I'm trying to get a baby Basset male, it sucks that they bark loud though!!! Any advice?

  • It's kind of like a low toned bellow more than an obnoxious bark. But it can travel very far. My bassest wouldn't do that indoors unless she thought something was outside but once I let her out into the back yard she would often bellow/howl to other dogs in the neighborhood. What they will do often though is growl for attention. Not in a menacing way but in a cute way. I'm sure if you looked up basset hounds on youtube you could hear it since they do it so often. It isn't very loud.

  • And basset hounds are EXTREMELY cute as puppies.

  • Love your video, my hound is stubborn and only will do things for treats...then he knows exactly what you want. They are very smart. Mine loves to go for walks and cries to go for one with his Dad ! They sure do drool and also SMELL houndy :) love it

  • i have 3 bassets at home, they`r are cute and veary nice. Bassets Just kick ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They can do every thing. So people thats like bassets got a smart thinking brain. GO BASSETS

  • Yes- news flash- bassets drool- go figure!

Please educate yourself on the breed before you get one! I love my Rufus!

  • My basset didn't drool a whole lot. In fact I don't ever remember her drooling at all. But I think I got a somewhat rare breed. She was much more atheltic looking than most other basset hounds. Her stomach was tucked up to her body so she didn't look overweight like these bassets. She was also fast as heck and had slightly less droopy skin. She wasn't part beagle though. I looked up pics of bassets and a few did look like her. So my advice to ppl would be to get athletic bassets if you can.

  • @christmanpunch There are several kinds of bassets. The one you're describing is the Basset Artesian Normande. They are longer-legged and way more athletic than the Basset Hound.

  • This video doesn't really prepare you for just how much your bassett hound will drool. Long slimey tendrils of drool will be ever present hanging from those adorable bassett jowls.

They are rotten dogs but at the same time the sweetest dogs you could ever form a relationship with.

  • My Basset Hound is 11 months old and his name is Chester. He is really cute and he loves to chew on things :)

  • This is a coincidence! My last name is Bassett, and the ways they described the basset hound...is kind of the same way someone could describe me!

    1. If I(and my whole family) don't exercise, I gain weight very easily! 2.I hate exercise! 3. I'm laid back.4. I'm not a star athlete either, I'm very bad at sports! 5. I can be stubborn! 6. I also have strong legs...but not strong arms! lol

Though, ironically, I kind of have small ears! lol

  • when u dont exercise you gain weight!?!

    wow.... (sarcastic)

    no, just kidding XD

im a lot like my dog, hes a hovawart:

a cheeky, selfish, happy-go-lucky breed that lives to help :)

  • Bassets r sweeties, mines laying next to me sleeping right now lol. I have a tri color one named Scooby Doo.

  • i love how it doesn't mention they're hunting dogs with the best hearing of any breed and the #2 sense of smell in dogs. only blood hounds have better noses. i've had a few bassets and they're great dogs. they're not hard to train at all as long as you know how.

  • CasperSuicide they don't have good hearing, their scent hounds. Their ears aren't design to catch sound waves like a german shepherd. But rather their long ears hang low to pickup scents to help keep them interested in the hunt. Beside if scent hounds had good hearing their ears would stand high, and they would be distracted from the scent, which would take away from the purpose of a scent hound.

  • "You know what? I'm happy" --- Droopy

  • >.> hehehe. what happen when u where a kid? did a basset hound scare you at night?

  • Every breed has its own unique characteristic that sets it apart from the others. I don't think it's fair that you bash Basset Hounds like that. Boxers are awesome, but so are Basset Hounds and every other dog breed. :)

  • I ♥ Bassets!

  • Every time I walk my basst/ beagle mix (who looks 90% like a pure breed basset hound) people are like OMG thats the cutest saddest face Ive ever seen she must be so nice I'm like yeah but inside I'm yelling " but she eats everything and chases every cat we see" but I cant blame her she a hunting dog and so she is allowed in my eyes to do that but to my mom shes a little more strick about the dog then I am lol

  • My basset is 8 months old and his name isTigger because he love to jump. At first i didnt know much about basset hounds because my friends dad just gave him to me and i really didnt belive they were ugly or they hould all the time but now i belive the howling . But there so dang cute you get past the noise and just love them more than anything!

  • @elradoca how do you like their smell? hehe

  • @elradoca your not supost to let young bassets jump and run excesivly it causes back problems later in life!! buy a book on them!!

  • Wow,.. I love their bark, so cute.

  • My Basset, Matilda or Mushyfus as I like to call her, is very active, random, stubborn and very well trained. They don't lie when they say that Bassets are stubborn. When Mussy doesn't want to go where I want to go, she'll just stop walking and if that doesn't work, she'll lean away from me and ground herself and if that won't work, then she'll lay down and roll onto her back. The lil' brat, I LUV her. She weighs 'bout 75-80 lbs, all muscle. Damn dog is strong. LOL Muffus says hello & so do I

  • My Basset will sleep all day every day if we let him, or he'll walk all day long if we take him, he doen'st care where he is or what he's doing as long as he is with us. Never buy a Basset if you work all day the are pack dogs and need company. I'd never have another breed of dog since owning a Basset, Buster is the most loving dog ever, he is the best, mind you he does like to pinch your diner if he gets the chance LOL

  • THERE NOT FAT ITS JUST EXTRA SKIN

  • When walking the hounds at the 1:40 mark, you get a better view of the hounds, they DO appear overweight.

Their waist shouldn't come straight back, there should be some form of hour-glass like figure.

What's a good measure? Feel the hound's ribs. Now put your hand out flat, feel your knuckles from the palm side of your hand, too fat. Close your hand to a fist, feel the knuckles from the top of your hand, too thin. Flatten hand again, feel knuckles from the back of your hand, just right.

  • I have one hyper basset and one lazy basset. It really depends on the basset.

  • Personality: 5/5

Maintenance: 1/5 - 3/5 they are needy. - ears need medicine cause they get infected easy.

Training: 3/5 use food and they will learn, eventually

adorable: 4.5/5 -5/5 they can be alittle slobbery sometimes.

  • My basset is neither quiet nor laid back. He can be quite hyper some times (especially when he wants to play fetch) and LOVES going for long walks (just as long as you take it slow). The stubbornness is understated, though. My dog will go as far as to lean (almost on a 45 degree angle) in the opposite direction of where you are trying to get him to go if he doesn't want to. He, and all bassets, are still adorable though.

  • wow! that sounds just like my bassett, waldo. Although, he sometimes lies downs because he wants to walk in another direction (that is if going on a 45 degree angle doesn't work) He isn't as fat as these dogs, not even close to as fat as them.

  • I love bassets they're my favorite breed, my basset "loki" turned 1 on Jan 29th and he's the most lovable dog ever, he loves attention so much he comes up to strangers and lays on his back expecting to get a belly rub.

  • looking for a calm dog to be a buddy for my great dane merlin. but he needs to be chilled out as my boy merlin is allways chilling out. i was also thinking of a clumber spaniel? what do you guys think which one do you think would be the best match.

  • Basset Hounds get along great with other dogs. I have one who loves to play, and another who is a big couch potato. Either way they are loving ,great dogs

  • Mine live on a ranch and literally go several miles a day. However, given the chance, my dog will sleep on the couch for 10 hours straight! They are VERY smart, but like video said, they may know what you want them to do, but they will do what they want! They are the best breed I've EVER had imo! I bet for folks that live in town though, this video is right on! It also didn't mention their nails are really thick and tough to keep short enough.

  • My basset love to go on walks and hikes. He wasn't fat at all he was compact muscle, also the most lovable dog I ever had.

  • My basset loves exercise! He's not laid back at all.

  • This video is extremely misleading, and really gives bassets a bad reputation. Yes, if you are going to have a basset and not work him like they were bred for, they will be fat lazy disobedient dogs. They were bred as scent hounds for hunting small game. They are very active and have incredible stamina. If you just let them lay around all day, you'll end up with fat hounds just like this woman owns.

  • completely agree with you. they arent that bad to train either. i may require slightly more time than other breeds however its like with any dog, if you start with a pup you can do anything

  • @Ororez that's true, those bassets are so fat, mine doesn't look like that at all

  • This is Elvis the Bassethound's favorite episode but yes you're right that''s how Bassethounds are! - Elvis and Savannah

  • i have 2 max and toby and they are brothers

  • adorable~! 5 stars and onto my fave~!

  • Very cute! You can never see too many hounds on YouTube! Love, Cat, Chaps and Emma
