@kiekebuste And he is not the only one. Found myself moving my fingers as much as I could remember the tunes when I saw the guy´s fingers in the video. He he. You should take every opportunity to practice. If you are at school and the lesson is boring, use your pencil. Waiting for the food at a restaurant, use the knife. Practice, practice, practice, and then you practice some more. /Cabby

The Oban msr 2007 is much more musical than this msr. Then again he was only a Corporal when this was filmed.IMHO of course!.One of the greatest pipers of all time and a great man tae play in the bar at night.
My learners always go through 4 stages of learning tunes. 1) Learn to sing the tune to find out where the emphasis should fall. 2) Learn to play it on the practice chanter as you have sung it. 3) Learn to play it on the bagpipes as you played it on the chanter. 4) Perfection perfection perfection.
This is what I keep telling my learners. With music you are supposed to improvise. You must play the music the way you feel it. There is absolutely no use in playing it 100% the way you are told to. Otherwise it's as if you typing up a given text. Completely feelingless.
the lad who's fingering along with the second march (around 3:12); he was early with his birl at the end of the part. You see folks, this is why he's in the balcony (and we're on youtube) and not on the floor at the Northern Meeting, details!
That is the most important thing when one is playing. Quite irrelevant if you are tuning up, playing in a competition, wedding, funeral, etc. If you don't like the tune scratch it from your repertoire. One should play with pride, pleasure and nothing else. If you enjoy playing what you are playing (irrelevant how simple), then the audience will love you even more. One sees how Gordon is playing with passion and that is always good.. Way to go Gordon!!!
2/4 the clan maccoll, the braes of castle grant. strathspeys the shepherds crook, the pipers bonnet.the reels are the smith of chillichassie and the cockerel in the the creel. all good stuff, many of the tunes can be found in the scots guards books.
The first march is The Clan MacColl, i don't know the 2nd one. The first strathspey is The Shepherd's Crook, followed by The Piper's Bonnet. I don't know the names of the reels that finish the set.
I never tire of this comp set. Good video....Gordon is the best around on traditional.

unless they dont know what they are doing. If a student is told to slow down they better damn well do it

Agartler...So wrong!
in a band everyone has to play it the same, to the pipe major's direction (no room for an individual interpretation
or else you end up with a shit pipe band!
