Historian say that the Catholic Church was somehow responsible for the spreading of the Plague. Because as cats were considered to be satanic they were chassed and killed. This caused the developement of the hudge rat population.
I hope everyone is aware of the Aristotelean fourfold division of causes? Material, Efficient, Formal, and Final? It's like this: the material cause is what a thing is made of, the efficient cause brings it about mechanically, the formal cause is what makes it the kind of thing it is, and the final cause it the purpose for which it comes about.
@NihilNominis Thus the actual theological explanation of the plague (for all of these distinctions pre-existed the plague by centuries) would have been: Divine Providence, which directs all things for the good of souls, has ordained the efficient and material causes (those causes which we can observe in a naturalistic framework) to be in place to bring about the plague, and He may have so ordained to correct or punish man's sins, the final cause. Explaining how doesn't explain why.

No...not at all...(1)Ignorance of microorganisms. No one knew that disease came from bacteria and viruses. (2)Overcrowded cities. The plague was initially spread through crowded markets. Everyone went to the market. Thousands of flea ridden people/animals all in extremely close contact and intermingling with each other is an ideal breeding ground for disease. That's why huge & densely populated areas like China and India still have the plague.
@lovellespice That doesn't even make sense. How can religion be the cause of the plague? How can religion be the reason it spread to so many people? Show me where in this documentary it says either of those things. I obviously missed it.
@KayBeeEee1983 Religious superstition regarding cats as familiars of witches caused many to be killed, which helped the rat population (with their fleas) proliferate. Without cats to keep the rat population in check, the plague spread faster and held on more than it would've other places. That's the only explanation that I can attribute to religion.
@KayBeeEee1983 I know cats have fleas. I have a cat. @Asenueh lovellespice obviously didn't even watch the whole video. It doesn't blame religion. It just ridicules religion and the general ignorance of the time period. It clearly blames overcrowded markets/cities and waste disposal. Filthy conditions attract and breed rats, which is how it goes from rats to people. Crowded markets allow the disease to easily transmit from person to person. When the markets became less crowded from everyone dying or staying home, the disease died out.
@lovellespice Historians aren't blaming religion for this. Physicians at the time were operating according to the anatomical knowledge passed down from the ancient Greeks. Both Guy de Chauliac, Pop Clement VI's physician and Pope Clement VI himself refuted the belief that Jews were responsible for the plague, since Jewish mortality was the same as everyone else's.
They make it sound as if only an ignoramus would believe that God would send judgment. Read the Old Testament. The LORD gave specific instructions about proper nutrition and hygiene. But also, he would punish/judge those who chose to thumb their nose at Him.
@slmacph you do realize you're a coplete idiot, do you. Funnily enough, were you born in the middle ages, you'd believing in curing deseases like a failed astrologer. What an idiot.
@slmacph I remember reading somewhere that Jewish people weren't so severely struck by the plague in the Middle Ages because of the mosaic laws on hygiene etc. When people are handling a dead bodies for example they are considered unclean and were separated from the others in their community for a while. I believe it was because of rules such as this that the plague didn't affect them as badly.
it wasnt just the fact that they didnt bathe on a regular basis, they lived all crammed in cities together and with a plethora of filthy disease transfering fleas
wow have at yee intellectuals arrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh prepare ye self for me blubbering nonsense and horrebell spelling arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggg yeee both be fithly dogs!!
@ThePBSamuel I don't serve anyone but my family and close friends. If god existed he has never been apart of my life in a way i would believe he was there. If there is no evidence in someones life how do you expect them to believe word of mouth. Until I am proven by (god) in a way i would know, then i would consider, but for now i do not believe in his existence, i certainly do not believe in Jesus. But I'm an open minded person and i understand peoples differences.
@hardstyle You are right to take care of your family. God gives us is salvation by faith for free. You just need to have trust in Him. He gave you free will as well. You have the choice to believe in Him or not. He will not impose this on you. If you deny the existence of Jesus, you cut yourself out of God as it is by Jesus sacrifice that we get our free salvation.
@hardstyle Cont. If you want to be proven by God is existence, I could only recommend you to ask Him, if He exists ;) to reveal himself to you. You might be surprised. For that you need to be sincere.
With unsanitary practices in European cities having no regular garbage collection, the rat population flourished. Eventually, the city dwellers started an extermination program. The rat fleas that contained the Yersinia Pestis found a temporary host in man when the rats died. The History Channel's idea that the bubonic plague infected Europe came from Mongolia is without evidentiary support.
@levine96629ify Actually, the evidence is pretty solid to say the least... Records show exactly how the plague spread geographically and that's not even an issue. The fact that it was recorded in the East and then appeared in Italian sea ports that were fequented by merchant ships sailing in from the East pretty much gives it all away. You can perhaps quibble about some minor details (the story about the Mongols, etc) but not about the direction of the spread of the disease...
If what you say is true, how do you reconcile the expert microbiologists, Davis/Dulbecco/Eisen/Ginsberg/Wood, authors of "Microbiology" 2nd Edition, page 802, where the authors stated that the bubonic plague originated in Europe and spread to China and India. Please provide your primary source of authority.
I hate how so many videos blames things on religion. If you look at regions throughout the world medical advances stay relatively the same- with slight advances depending on the stability and interaction of the region. It has nothing or at the most-very little to do with religious beliefs, but rather the advancement and development of social interaction and the exchange and advancement of ideas.
@XxxSakura101 You have absolutely NO idea what my educational status is,and trying to retort with a slight about mah brains capacity for knowledge is extremely shaky ground, when you don't know the individual to whom you're aiming said slight to...in fact,it borders on sheer lunacy to try!!Ah went to an amazing school, and was taught the intricacies of history for many many years, along with a plethora of other subjects, all of which ah received scorching marks for,in fact,ah graduated 1yr ahead!!
@TheMrMarilyn I never "questioned" you're level of education, nor did i raise doubt on you're intellectual capacity. I simply stated that shouting a single curse as an attempt to "argue you're view" is not particularly persuasive. I find you're reaction to be not only disproportionate, but severely lacking in the basic understandings of sarcasm.
@XxxSakura101 Ah wasn't TRYING to 'persuade' yoo of ANYthing!!Mah original comment was just a one word statement!!Ahv taken the time to engage with yoo,to point out that using someones 'education' as a basis from which to retort, when yoo don't know the person you're aiming it to,is extremely shaky ground!!If yoo say "great EDUCATED analysis" yoo are implying something about the persons EDUCATION,which is where 'educated' COMES FROM!!!!Jesus wept...WTF is UP,using words yoo don understand!!
@TheMrMarilyn Please understand the definition of an educated analysis before commenting further. However, from you're mannerism alone i can venture a guess and say you did not receive adequate instruction in English. Perhaps this can be attributed to a young age, immunity, and or ignorance. It's entirely reasonable to now assume one of two possibilities. One, that you are a child, or two that you are an idiot. Perhaps a combination of the two?
@XxxSakura101 May ah suggest yoo get out more!!Or better yet...find an analyst with a lot of time on his hands...and commit to an intensive few decades of analytical introspection...ah hear weaving boats out of popsicle sticks is 'big' these days...yoo are prolly a natural bubz!!As for meh...mah time and interest have reached saturation point...with this tiresome subject and yoo...so mah only one word ansa ah have to proffer and add...is: YAWN!!!!
it wss a big rhino-like creature with one tiny horn, but it was tall and thin.
thw climate changed by one degree, the grasslands were it lived went away, but it was fine with it, but then a sickness came and killed them, the only reason it didnt earlier was because of the grasslands.
@shoshanish "the best friend(excuse me, apparently it`s "freind":) of man died out" >:)) "grassland where (oh , no, "were":)) hehehe you`re soooooo cute:D
According to christianity, nothing happens unless it is gods will, is it any wonder then why the people blame god, also they didnt have the knowledge of disease and medicine that we have now. You cant have such high expectations of early man, it's taken thousands of years for us to get to where we are now.
what else were these people to do?? god was the only thing that made sense at the time, and telling them that micro-organisms were infecting their cells would make absolutely no sense to them.
we need a new plague, scientists say we dont have enough food to feed the people at the moment and we dont, they want to come up with new ways to grow and breed more food, the planet cant sustain such massive amounts of people and the food for them, we need to cull a huge percentage of people off........ ooooh no cant do that!!! why the fuck not!! we do it with other species on earth!!! humans are the main plague!!!
@nataliiiaf So when we have too many birds, rats, cats etc in one place and kill them off before they run out of food in that area thats ok?, but when I say do it to humans thats not? you need a reality check.
@windofthegods right! birds, rats , cats and HUMANS = saaaame thing (killing birds and cats is horribel too btw)..i HOPE you`re like 10 yrs old, then it wld be pardnoable maybe..like i said, just EXTERMINATE YOURSELF first, for the better future of the world, ok?
@nataliiiaf So you would rather watch billions of humans starve to death slowly, morals dont even come into it, necessity will always prevail, unfortunately a necessary evil.
@windofthegods NO, I would rather we all try and figure out and find a solution that does not involve massacre!! ofcourse, your thinking is obviously WAY too primitive to be a part of this process, so , like i`ve said before : if murder is REALY your solution, go ahead and start with yourself OR admit you`re full of CRAP (also I hope your family can arrange for a good psychiatrist for you, you NEED help, you `re exhibiting symptoms of a psychopat..PLEASE get professional help:((
@windofthegods oh, you`re not extinct still?? ERGO ( following the logical assumptions of my previous comemnt) :you`re full of crap:) and NO, I CAN`T STOP CRYING.......FROM LAUGHTER:D..pathetic and hatful nut-jobs like you are fun to poke sometimes (and THAT is the undenyiable skill i`m most prod of:))
@shoshanish hahahahaha:D kiddo, its a good thing you SAID you were 11, since you have a vocabulary of a 6-year-old:D first, there is a difference between MISSPELLING and MISTYPING (khem -khem, "..hoE to write" , "..To you even know" - instead of "hoW" and "Do you":D anwyz,i can`t seriously discuss this with a kid, so trot on before mommy starts to worry:))
@nataliiiaf he's presenting rational arguments and you just keep telling him to kill himself. Debate FAIL.
It's cute how clever you think you are. Just.. from an outside perspective. This guy is owning you. You may have a point here and there but it's lost, mired in your very immature communication skills. Quite frankly, it's clear you're well under 18. If you're intent on conversing with adults, learn to speak like one. This is just embarrassing...
@OneLazyNinja hehe, i`m sure you hear this a lot, but once again ,so it would finally stick : " NOBODY asked your opinion on this particular matter, so speak when spoken to":))(oh and btw, i`m well over 18, and since you`re supporting an insane childish point of that guy,i`m seriously doubting whether you yourself are allowed to drink yet:))
dont ppl find it funny when something to do with illnesses are on youtube that every one takes the role of doctor and start to tell u bout how its caused and cures, blah blah blah, when u already kinda know lol. i find it hilarious!
its not the religion itself that's flawed but the institution of the church that was the cause of the vast majority of the bull crap associated with religion, and if not for this nasty little event that strangle hold would've never relented and we never would've embraced a scientific perspective...
@Secretary00Not00Sure No its religions fault because religon gets its information from chruches. So people based thier religion on what the churches say, there for the church is religion & the religion is the church. Plus even if you want to say they are seperate (even tho they are not) theres still the fact they believed this plague was cuased by a god which is the main idea behind religion. The plague is the fault of religious people who burned anybody who brought intelegence to mankind.
@Socoolscienceshow hm,i guess you`re partly right : if the church hadn`t been oppressing any free thought, and if people were not deeply religious , which would allow them to think more independently and look for valid explanations, it is possible many important discoveries would be made much earlier and could prevent desasters like plague..
@Socoolscienceshow and it IS funny how people say :"oh it`s not the religious people , it`s the church", and WHO the church found the support in? WHO served as the mechanism for the church oppression? followers..the "evil" church couldn`t do crap if the "fathful" didn`t follow , obbey, believe, and support it:((
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
thats the way it should be my friend i personally pee in my girls face when she makes me mad kinda lets her know that im in charge and at the same time im marking my territory
NO CURES WORKED!Leeches didn't work, posies didn't work, powdered unicorn horns didn't work, sitting in a sewer didn't work, arsenic charms didn't work NOTHING DID except......................maybe strapping live animals to the sores drove out the bacteria.I don't know.
it doesn't matter how good ur immune system is. this very same sickness is being manufactured in labs as we breath. didn't u hear about the frozen rats infected with bubonic plauge that went missing.
unless they did something, yes seeing that its a government aided virus they will have a cure but will not give it to people till it kills a few million. government+ viruses= population control
@plasiloo remeber thoe this was 100's of years ago, they never new about bacteria ect, but your right if your talking about things whuich happen today,
@plasiloo true...we know that NOW, then the only way they could explain it was a punishment from God. Very easy to see things with hind-sight...they didn't have the knowledge we have now.
@plasiloo actually that's exactly what it was! Don't you think every so often there is a need of a... ("HUMAN CLEANSING") imagine it.... Noah's day, Sodom and Gomorrah, death of firstborn in Egypt, many slain in the wilderness, the only difference here is that the bible's writings were done with being recorded!
@plasiloo They didn't blame God- they blamed sin. Sin and God are different. They looked at God as being bound to punish sin, and since humans created sin, they were the source of the plague. God may have sent it (in their minds) but it was the human sin that sort of forced God's hand. So it was without question a case of them taking full responsibility for their actions. Epidemiology was completely unknown at this time, and religion dominated, so one needs to be forgiving of their ignorance.
@lupischuckle You can think whatever u like and Im not referring to this and Im just saying that ppl should never blame God for anything and that ppl should be responsible for there own actions and Im not dumb I know it was a virus and what does sin have to do with this..Its just a virus that killed them and sin had nothing to do with it
@plasiloo Well it's not about what "I think" it's about what actually happened. Obviously we all know that bacteria was killing people- due to a total lack of understanding of epidemiology, bacterial infection, and sanitation (among other factors). But you have to understand what people thought at the time. Religion dominated every aspect of their life. There was no understanding of cause and effect that DIDN'T relate to God.
@lupischuckle They saw sin as the cause of this plague (again we now know better) so without a doubt sin plays an enormous part when trying to understand how these people faced this disaster. When they looked at their own sin as causing this outbreak, they thought they WERE taking responsibility for their actions. They didn't blame God, they blamed their sin. They thought the cause of the plague was sin- and they tried to remedy that. You have to be able to see the difference between sin and God
@lupischuckle I know what happend Im not dumb I wasn't born yesterday and I know what killed them already all your doing is repeating yourself........
@plasiloo Clarifying and repeating are two different things. You're obviously confused and unwilling to listen to anything other than the voices in your head. So take care there bud! I'm done.
@plasiloo LOL what stupid If I wasn't listening to you then why did I respond and no Im not confused and unwilling I think thats you and Im fine I dont hear voice's in my head and u can think whatever u want I know what happend and what I said was a different aspect from this Im just saying ppl should never blame god for anything thats all period Ur responding with what I already know
@plasiloo how the hell is this plague the peoples fault did you not learn any thing from this video it said clearly that the black death was caused by bubonic plague caused by yersinia pestis carried by fleas learn to listen you stupid shit
@tanndox They were more controlled by religious leaders, who were power hungry. Since many commoners were uneducated, curropt priests could easily manipulated them by saying God commands you to do this and that. This is probably how the crusades were started too. Corrupt leaders using their tweaked versions of Christianity as propaganda. Its quite sad actually, it gives most of us Christians especially Catholics a bad rep.
@MeesterCrumpet a lot of school teachers use to beat children back in grandma and grandpa's time. Priests that are pedophiles are a few rotten apples in an orchard. You're basically stereotyping a group of people. What you're saying is no different than saying Black people are rotten criminals. Would you say thats true among all black people? No its not, there are bad people all around the world and they belong to every category of people you think of.
@SshakeAndBake Not all the Christian religions supported the crusades, the Orthodox church was against them. In fact I remember reading that the Catholic church sacked Constantinople (Istanbul) which was an Orthodox city.
@mirrorreflex I didn't neccessarly mean all sectors of Christianity. There was a clear division between the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The crusades started when the Orthodox ironically asked the Roman Catholics to help them take back the ancient holy land, but other than that the two churches had sort of a bitter rivalry.
And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with plague, and with the beasts of the earth. (Rev)
Historian say that the Catholic Church was somehow responsible for the spreading of the Plague. Because as cats were considered to be satanic they were chassed and killed. This caused the developement of the hudge rat population.

@hardstyle I am not a slave, I have chosen to serve my Lord. I am free. Not choosing you serve the prince of this world: Satan.
ThePBSamuel 2 weeks ago
@ThePBSamuel I don't serve anyone but my family and close friends. If god existed he has never been apart of my life in a way i would believe he was there. If there is no evidence in someones life how do you expect them to believe word of mouth. Until I am proven by (god) in a way i would know, then i would consider, but for now i do not believe in his existence, i certainly do not believe in Jesus. But I'm an open minded person and i understand peoples differences.
hardstyle 2 weeks ago

The History Channel's idea that the bubonic plague infected Europe came from Mongolia is without evidentiary support.
levine96629ify 1 year ago

@TheMrMarilyn I never "questioned" you're level of education, nor did i raise doubt on you're intellectual capacity. @TheMrMarilyn Please understand the definition of an educated analysis before commenting further. However, from you're mannerism alone i can venture a guess and say you did not receive adequate instruction in English. Perhaps this can be attributed to a young age, immunity, and or ignorance. Secretary00Not00Sure 1 year ago 8
Socoolscienceshow 1 year ago
@Socoolscienceshow hm,i guess you`re partly right : if the church hadn`t been oppressing any free thought, and if people were not deeply religious , which would allow them to think more independently and look for valid explanations, it is possible many important discoveries would be made much earlier and could prevent desasters like plague..
nataliiiaf 1 year ago
@Socoolscienceshow and it IS funny how people say :"oh it`s not the religious people , it`s the church", and WHO the church found the support in? @plasiloo true...we know that NOW, then the only way they could explain it was a punishment from God. Very easy to see things with hind-sight...they didn't have the knowledge we have now.
HedebBast 1 year ago
@plasiloo actually that's exactly what it was! Don't you think every so often there is a need of a... ("HUMAN CLEANSING") imagine it.... Noah's day, Sodom and Gomorrah, death of firstborn in Egypt, many slain in the wilderness, the only difference here is that the bible's writings were done with being recorded!
TyLy407 1 year ago
@plasiloo isnt it hilarous how some ppl can be so stupid XD Stupidity is always hungry & needs feeding!
Socoolscienceshow 1 year ago
@plasiloo They didn't blame God- they blamed sin. Sin and God are different. They looked at God as being bound to punish sin, and since humans created sin, they were the source of the plague. God may have sent it (in their minds) but it was the human sin that sort of forced God's hand. So it was without question a case of them taking full responsibility for their actions. Epidemiology was completely unknown at this time, and religion dominated, so one needs to be forgiving of their ignorance.
lupischuckle 1 year ago
@lupischuckle You can think whatever u like and Im not referring to this and Im just saying that ppl should never blame God for anything and that ppl should be responsible for there own actions and Im not dumb I know it was a virus and what does sin have to do with this..Its just a virus that killed them and sin had nothing to do with it
plasiloo 1 year ago
@plasiloo Well it's not about what "I think" it's about what actually happened. Obviously we all know that bacteria was killing people- due to a total lack of understanding of epidemiology, bacterial infection, and sanitation (among other factors). But you have to understand what people thought at the time. Religion dominated every aspect of their life. There was no understanding of cause and effect that DIDN'T relate to God.
lupischuckle 1 year ago
@lupischuckle They saw sin as the cause of this plague (again we now know better) so without a doubt sin plays an enormous part when trying to understand how these people faced this disaster. When they looked at their own sin as causing this outbreak, they thought they WERE taking responsibility for their actions. They didn't blame God, they blamed their sin. They thought the cause of the plague was sin- and they tried to remedy that. You have to be able to see the difference between sin and God

tanndox 11 months ago
@tanndox They were more controlled by religious leaders, who were power hungry. Since many commoners were uneducated, curropt priests could easily manipulated them by saying God commands you to do this and that. This is probably how the crusades were started too. Corrupt leaders using their tweaked versions of Christianity as propaganda. Its quite sad actually, it gives most of us Christians especially Catholics a bad rep.
SshakeAndBake 11 months ago
@SshakeAndBake
well catholics are rotten people that beat school children and rape altar boys thats why they get a bad rep.
MeesterCrumpet 10 months ago
@MeesterCrumpet a lot of school teachers use to beat children back in grandma and grandpa's time. Priests that are pedophiles are a few rotten apples in an orchard. You're basically stereotyping a group of people. What you're saying is no different than saying Black people are rotten criminals. Would you say thats true among all black people? No its not, there are bad people all around the world and they belong to every category of people you think of.
SshakeAndBake 10 months ago
@SshakeAndBake Not all the Christian religions supported the crusades, the Orthodox church was against them. In fact I remember reading that the Catholic church sacked Constantinople (Istanbul) which was an Orthodox city.
mirrorreflex 9 months ago
@mirrorreflex I didn't neccessarly mean all sectors of Christianity. There was a clear division between the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The crusades started when the Orthodox ironically asked the Roman Catholics to help them take back the ancient holy land, but other than that the two churches had sort of a bitter rivalry.
