It's solely the kinetic energy that causes the damage. @blueriderccx not quite, kinetic motion has velocity. its the loss or change in velocity that makes the deceleration. The higher the velocity the more mass or energy it has. The strenght of something is purely down to the material.

Already commented & laughed BUT I must say that this test reflects not the truth. For the following reasons: 1) Effectively the Uno is old and has a thin body, but it received 2 crashes in full throttle by 2 cars when it was still: What else should I expect, minor damages? any other medium/little cars would have been smashed similarly (Look at the Escort for example). 2) Effectively there was no intrusion in the Merc, but if the driver lives or not, it's a question of kinetic energy mostly.

I think more then that, the merc is too tough for all other cars of the same age. If it's a 80's corolla or civic hitting the uno, the person on the uno will still be dead, but the car may not be squeezed as much as if a merc made contact

That's obviously not to blame Mercs, but to underline that sincerely this test (as most Fifth Gear's tests) makes not so much sense to me. It very marginally reflects the truth. A Merc doesn't always mean "total security" exactly like a Uno doesn't always mean "Certain death" (well at least it would happen with other cars as well).

Actually the Uno used on the video must have been a 99, 2000 or 2000 2001 model. Here in Brazil the new Fiat Uno Way (Way is a factory made mod, better suspension, wider tires, more powerful engine, ) The new 2010 Uno Way has suffered several structural modfications, so that it becomes a stronger car. Not saying it became as stronge as a Humvee, but its gotten a lot better than the older versions. But I agree with you, the old Uno must be one of, if not the unsafest car in the world.

In a way it does. If the car is higher, the solid areas of the car as also follow suit. During the event of a crash, the smaller cars always end up the worst becuz they connect with the solid areas of the larger car. The larger car has a higher rate of survival. Even though its 1-2 inches in difference.
