PERMANENT WAVES (1980) marked the starting point for Rush's full-blown entry into condensed, accessible progressive rock. They abandoned the 20-minute suites and mystical lyrics for catchy progressive song structures, and more human, worldly-related topics. But, Geddy Lee (vocals/bass/synths), Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (drums/lyrics) didn't lose their brilliance in composition, even if most of the track lengths were fit for radio. ENJOY! ;o)
Throughout the initial tour, plus a few sets in the Moving Pictures & Signals tours- Geddy sang the entire song. But after he had stated in an interview that "their music was about influence, life and expression thereof, not for MONEY", he started leaving out the verse "Art as expression, not as Market Campaign, will still capture our imagination... given the same state of integrity, it will surely help us along". Don't get me wrong, I've been a RUSH fanatic since I was 11 yrs. old (I'm 48 now).
I've always loved this song and its concept of a short-lived galaxy. Beginning in the the tidal pools, then into the future. A very nice performance that I'd not heard until this day. Sounds very fresh and energetic; and I suppose that would be 'cause it was a new song at the time.
