  • Pretty sure my heart just broke into a million pieces....

  • He kind of says, 'look back...' with no emotion but, that gives it so much emotion. :)

  • OMG his face! It's so tragic. *sniff* (watches end kiss scene to make it better)

  • @GallagherGirl07 Glad you watched this too. :) btw, I couldn't find the comment you replied to. What did it say?

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, sigh...............

  • RA is brilliant from beginning to end. This is merely one small example of it. I will never, ever tire of watching this film.

  • Who writes this stuff? "look back at me." genius!

  • This scene is heart wrenching. Richard Armitage is so brilliant at the end.

  • the living proof that a movie scene can be played with eyes only... Exceptional, truly exceptional!!!

  • When I first watched this part, i was sooo sad that she didn't!

  • That line just floored me when I was watching this. He utters it with such intense desire but softly. Such fierce passion held in check. And from a man! God, I love him.

  • Kind of of hard to do in a closed carriage:) But still Wonderful.

  • One of the sweetest and heartbreaking moments in the movie I think. At first I thought he was gonna chase after her. Or at least I wanted him too lol!

  • THIS MAN IS MINE

  • Everytime I watch this... OMG LOOK BACK AT HIM!

  • look back, look back at me. *swooooonss* I screamed "OMG CHASE HER!"

  • Oh I'm looking back..... ;)

  • "To be sure, as soon as possible." HAHA too funny. Mommy wants her gone!

  • Oh, man! This scene breaks my heart!

  • Thats what I said! Why didn't she??? :(

  • eeeee so romantic! *melts into puddle*

  • I swear if RA said that to me I'd spend the rest of my life crashing into things.

  • @blahblahblinx you and me both! :DDD

  • It's somehow good to know that I wasn't the only person who shouted look back at him!!! This whole sequence is just sould destroying, he thinks he's never gonna see her again and she thinks he's in love with someone else so won't see him again!! Ah Gaskell you and your misunderstandings wrench me to bits lol!

  • Squee!

  • I think this is the best part of the movie. My heart skipped a beat when he said "look back at me"!

  • I totally agree...it's a gut wrenching beautiful scene!

  • oh goodness when i first watched this when i saw the movie my heart was beating and i literally screamed "LOOK BACK AT HIM!!"

i almost cried. poor thornton. ill look at u ;)

wonderful movie and positively one of the best parts.

  • hahahaha! I screamed at her too.

  • SHE DIDN'T LOOK BACK!

    Crazy woman.

  • HE is one of the greatest and most underrated actors I have ever come across! He nailed this character! I've seen his movie a dozen hundred times and all because of him! Plus he's damn sexy!

  • Amen to that.

  • No, he says "look back." Just do a search for it, it comes up in more than one place (including IMDB).

  • @madamtorsion if he just says look back, then whats the second part? :P

  • @jerona The second part? Do you mean the next part of the line? He says "look back, look back at me." The Geordie-esque accent can be difficult to understand at times.

  • Thank you so much, it's taken me forever to figure out what he said then

  • Oh, my heart. *SOB*

  • OMG !

If it would have been possible at all, I would jump into the film give him a hug a kiss and say: Well I will always look back at you.. I couldn't resist it xD!

  • Oh, this scene always make me shiver! His voice, and the emotion in his face!! Thanks for posting!

  • Holy crap. I love this movie.

  • My favourite part of the whole series it makes me want o just give him a huge hug x

  • And the snow falling:

    - 'I believe I have seen hell... and it is white'

  • @BlackPeppermint That is my favorite line. It is the most striking to me.

  • What a lovely and heart wrenching scene. Richard Armitage has bewitched me.

  • Body and Soul

  • @JEAN961 body and soul...and you love love love him ;)

  • gah tears my heart in two!

i know that he literally wants her to look back, bc it would show him that she cared about him, but thinking back on the movie, doesn't she always look back when she walks away from him? or most of the time anyway? so he just wanted her to do what she always did and look back at him this last time.

let me know what you think, i'm not positive.

  • The line is "look back, look back at me." This could be taken either literally or figuratively. In a literal sense, he wants her to see him and to see his reaction to her going. Figuratively, he wants her to remember him, he wants her to "look back" on her time with him.

  • @madamtorsion Really? I always thought he was saying it because if she did look back it would be a sign that she cared for him.

  • @TheGwenjamin I imagine that could be part of it as well.

  • @madamtorsion Yeah its because all the way through she always looked back at him whenever she was taken away from him, such as in that quite little dinner, so he wanted her to do it one more time! Probably to show that yes she still cared about him!! I can't quite help but wonder what he would have done if she did!!

  • It is definitely "look back at me."

  • He is such a good actor. I mean you can see it in his eyes how he was feeling. From hope and then change to sorrow and sadness when she didn't look back.

  • i think its the best scence in the film, look at back me is better than in the roman,i love it much, make me feel his sad ,so great his play

  • Why does he want her 2 look back?

  • because he love her,and he think she will not come back here

  • How can she not look back? I know I would!!!

  • this scene and and him.. just takes my breath away everytime I see him in the shot.. and those words make my heart skip a beat.

and.. ladies and gents, a fan girl is born.

  • ooooooh lordy wheres me fan!!!! love it

  • oomph....my woman parts.

  • thanks for posting this! i love this scene!

  • Wow..what a WONDERFUL movie this is. I only "found" it recently. I have to confess that it has now taken first place in my heart as my favorite all time movie. Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler was first but it isn't anymore.

  • Oh, good Lord, I can't even put it into words. This movie is just too perfect.

  • the most beautiful scene of this movie, I must admit

  • he certainly is gorgeous!!

  • a very touching last moment there! thank you for sharing!

  • i just watched "north and south" for the first time today.. i was freaking out during that scene.. i just kept thinking, look back!!! give him SOMETHING!!! lol

  • I wish that would happen for me :( I'd look back!

  • oh me too!!! who could resist that gorgeous face!! ;o)

  • and that VOICE! omg i could just melt...

  • Love the music, the acting... this video!

  • Heartbreaking.

  • I got this the other day and was only going to watch one episode. 4 hours later I couldn't wait to watch it all again. It was truly brilliant. Richard Armitage was wonderful and I agree with the comment below about his eyes when words were not present he showed all the emotion of a scene with his eyes. I melted at this point and as for the station scene at the end. I haven't recovered. All the time Margaret is speaking he is looking at her with such love in his eyes and face.

  • Richard Armitage's voice is so powerful, but his eyes! I've watched this scene over and over and the intese emotion he is able to convey with such subtly astounds me. I really think he is THE most brilliant actor.

  • I totally agree!

  • The best scene of the series, you can reaaly see and feel his pain when he says "look back at me". RA is a such a great actor.

  • I totally agree. He puts my heart upside down!!!

  • I like his desolate expression in the end of the clip.

  • The music, the cinematography, the snow, the expression of her face, everything is perfect in this scene, and above all, his voice, the imperative tone of it...look back...look back at me...one of the most beautiful things I 've seen.

  • Is it just me but when I first saw this I thought he said

"You're back. You're back in me"

    ????

  • "Look back. Look back at me."

  • I think it was just you lol

  • @BroadwayStarlett yeah I thought so too, like he had tried so hard not to care about her and she crawled back into his heart the minute he saw her again. But either way really...

  • i wish you well mr. thornton is SUCH a lame response... I will come back, my love is SOOOO much better!

  • Nice!! RA is really cute!!

  • I absolutly love this scene. "Look back at me" is one of my favorite quotes. I love this movie and I love Richard Armitage.

  • Sigh. . .

My fave line from the movie. Thanks for putting it up!

  • I absolutly loved this scene! I had to admit I was very angry with Margret for not looking back...I so would have!! Thorton looked so sad =[ But it all turned out well in the end ^.^

  • i love this scene so much b/c in almost every movie that has the slightest love interest there is that one scene where the two lovers are parting and they look back at eachother or are waiting for the other to look back at them as they go in opposite directions...but no one actually says it!!!! thornton voicing that desire is just utterly heart-wrenching...

  • This scene still gives me goosebumps - and I've seen it 10,000 times now!

  • Watched this all in one go last night and this is one of my two favourite scenes (the other obviously being the finale!) so thank you so much for putting this up! it's sooo beuatiful - you can just see his heart breaking. rock on richard armitage!

  • Thank You for putting this scene up. It's one of my favorites from this film. It makes me want to cry as he holds onto the last bit of hope and makes my heart melt because it is what I'd want someone to feel if I were leaving. THANK YOU!

  • "The romance is passionate, but it is

    all

about the eyes. Let me just say, that if I were casting one of my

    books, I

would want Richard Armitage for my brooding hero.

It is not just a chick flick. My husband adored it — it has much meat

    for

the masculine mind to chew on." (review by g.g. vandagriff of the meridian)

  • This scene rips my heart out! His sense of complete isolation is so palpable, it just breaks my heart. An amazing scene with a wonderful character. Love that Mr. Thornton!

  • One of the most powerful scenes I´ve ever seen!! And the music there is so moving.Brilliant!

  • The way he turns around, hiding his face, only to return watching her leave him..

That voice saying "Look back at me"..

There is something special about Richard Armitage I cannot put into words.

  • i wish the producers would make a special sequel to north and south, i just can't have enough of mr. thornton and margaret hale. sandy and brian, think of the multitudes of adoring n&s fans !!! (elizabeth gaskell wouldn't mind, surely!) rest her soul.

  • oh yes!! I wish they made...it would be great:)))

  • Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. I LOVE Richard Armitage.

  • I got it on my computer, and it's called "murmur" since I couldn't hear that he sayed "look back at me" :P anyway, a very beautiful and touching scene.

  • BUT WHY DOESN'T SHE LOOK BACK???!!! silly girl...

  • I KNOW! REALLY!

I loved Margaret and could understand and empathize with her, but, I hated how she kept breaking poor John's heart!!

  • I love it!! It is my favorite scene!!! (together with the 'he was her brother" scene and the ending :D ) RA is such an amazing actor!!

I watch the DVD every week!

  • HIS FACE AT 0:39!!!! i would DIE if he looked at me like that!!!

  • I know!! me too :D The first time i saw it a voice in my head was yelling: Margaret, SAY SOMETHING!!!!!!! ;P

Yeah that was a little over the top xD

  • such a powerful scene and one of my favorite pieces of dialogue from the movie. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • I always start to laugh when his mother says, "to be sure.."

  • this is such a beautiful scene. I got the DVD but I still had to watch it here:)

No one can look so hot while broodering as RA
