My wife and I took this trip from St. Paul to Seattle. We think the most scenic area was western Montana into Idaho. After touring the Pacific northwest down to the California redwoods, we returned back to Seattle after a week. Returning home on Amtrak. Good stuff.
I love this song and I love these views. I was thinking about taking this train and I think this video makes me want to go sooner rather than later. What time of the year do you recommend I go? I'm assuming this was taken in the winter and it looks beautiful.
@jpsmith81 If you want to get the most out of your trip, meaning being able to see more of the mountains, then go in summer. Best time would be from Mid July to Late August. It usually starts to snow up in the mountains early. In fact, they already got some snow at logans pass in glacier park this past week. So it's only open for a very short time in summer. If winter if your thing, then pretty much anytime after September through April/May.
I'm a Montanan born/raised. There's not a better place. Would highly recommend a summer/fall trip. The winters can be harsh, with temperatures that drop to -30F at time. There are several times during the winter that you can not travel through the mountains due to severe weather. I would highly recommend Sept/Oct absolutely beautiful when the Larch trees are turning colors. Glacier Park is an amazing place to go, but the Going to the Sun Highway is closed from about October to early July.
I took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle in July of 2009...Montana was the best part...beautiful mountains, etc. Would like to go in the winter sometime. Thanks for sharing your vidoes.
This will sound silly...but if the train went off the tracks...you should have a bug out/ survival bag...Be prepared...It's looks like total woods and mountains..beautiful but hard to survive.

@TheWadejones Depends on if you want to live in montana. :o)
You would have to get accustomed to the winters in montana and they can be pretty brutal.

Living in snow made me batty (I'm a wuss and I know it), but seeing it like this with all those trees along the mountainside just makes sense to me.
