how pathetic is it that people see ONE black comic artist and the klansmen come out from their caves. Coipel is not the first black artist to work in comics. Dwayne McDuffee (RIP) is considered by a huge amount of people to be very important to comics.
@Blastaar7...lol I know right? It's a shame. But another black comic artist is Ryan Benjamin. I didn't even know he was black until the past few years when I stumbled across his deviant art page. I loved his Grifter work and it was pretty cool to find out he was black.
I'm black myself and always wanted to get into comics when I was younger so it's cool to see folks who realized the dream (but don't get me wrong I appreciate ALL talented artist race notwithstanding lol).
@namelessronin - African Frenchman?? Did you just make that up? He was born and raised in France. Both his parents are from the Caribbean. He's not African.
I actually met him at the Chicago Con. Really nice guy who was very accessible because no one knows who he is yet. I have a short video of our interrogation of him but I don't think I'll post it unless there are good parts (i.e. how he broke into comics).
@ClutchModeEngaged That doesn't mean racism is over. Look at how many people are hating Obama because he's black and has connections to Islam. They call him a terrorist, a towel-head, and a Muslim (and they say it like being Muslim is a bad thing).
You don't see many people of color in the comic book industry. You see even less women in the industry. I can only think of one popular black comic book writer, Dwayne McDuffie.
@gurtygee Yeah, racism is terrible and it's everywhere, including black people! Black people tend to be the most racist ethnic group out there, believe it or not. They can say and do whatever they want, but if a white person says something then the black community acts like World War III is about to kick off. Just watch Comic View on BET (Black Entertainment Television) and you can hear 50 white jokes. In fact, I wonder how the black community would react to WET (White Entertainment Television)?
@ClutchModeEngaged You know there are more white people that watch BET than black people right? Anyway, yes black people can be racist too. We all can be racist. That doesn't make it acceptable. Wrong is wrong. Don't you see how you generalization of black people was racist? I don't want to shoot you down my dude, but you have to acknowledge that color, prejudice, and bigotry is still here. And there is a joke that we do have something similar to a WET, and thats CMT (country music television).
@gurtygee Wow! So, you are saying black people can't enjoy country music. You are better than this, man. It's time to open your eyes and become enlightened to other cultures and ethnic groups. There's no more need for simple-mindedness, brah!
@gurtygee Coming from the dude that's surprised a black man can be a comic book artist in (when you posted the comment) the year 2008! Change with the times, brah! It's called being progressive, I'm done talking about this, too. Some people will stay stuck in their racist ways...very sad.
@gurtygee Ha, ha, ha! You removed the comment, eh? Well, the question was, "Name another black comic book artist." Billy Graham was a legend in the comic industry and an absolute inspiration to many other up-and-coming artists.
@ClutchModeEngaged I know that a black man can be a comicbook artist. I'm was excited that he is so popular and black. That's uncommon. Please, name another popular black comic book artist. Can you?
PS: I accidentally click that thumbs up button, while try to reply to you.
@ClutchModeEngaged practically every channel is WET, thats why they originally came up with a BET. Back in the 90's the nbc's and abc's had their sitcoms that were completely culturally one sided, so fox tv started doing sitcoms from a more ethnic pov (Martin, living single, new york undercover.) Guess which got more ratings. It's also apparent that you are quite ignorant if you honestly think "black people tend to be the most racist ethnic group."
@gurtygee I was surprised too. Didn't even know he was French hah. Not that either of these things matter, but I always assume that comic book artists are fat white guys. lol

@brettsd71 come on, it's was a logical assumption that he's of direct african decent. France has a fairly sizable population of African immigrants.
