Nope. I believe it happens in the US as well. It's ludacris. Especially the banks that are under the "help" of the government now....*cough* Bank of America *cough*...and many more. *cough* Capital One *cough*.....anyway...
This is so true. And here's what's worse. I used to work in a bank and I assure you identity theft doesn't happen by someone finding an old receipt in your garbage, these aren't fucking racoons, they're criminals, criminals that work at the bank and have unchecked access to everything involving your life. And when they use that information or sell it, the bank claims it's your fault for not properly shredding your bills. Complete bullshit, and everyone is buying it.
@ssstracener - what you say may be the case in the US, but Mitchell and Webb is British comedy, and here in the UK, the whole identity theft concept is little more than an attempt to offload blame for fraud onto the customer.
Identity theft is a serious issue. To apply for a credit card or a loan all you need is a few personal details + your annual income and employer. If someone has.. say.. a keylogger on your PC, they could get your internet banking passwords. Then they can check how much you get paid per month, multiply it by 12, check the payer details then violas, they have your employers and annual salary. It's not as hard as you think.
One of the only ways someone could put a keylogger on *your* computer is if they either had physical access to it (you're an idiot for not protecting it) or you downloaded random garbage from the internet and ran random executable files (you're definitely an idiot). So stupid users are the real problem when it comes to keyloggers.
Yes the term Identity Thief was created to imply responsibility lay with the individual when in fact it’s the age old crime of Fraud and the organisation’s security is usually at fault.
It’s very similar the media companies implying that copyright infringement is theft. When it fact copyright infringement is copyright infringement and theft is theft.
In the U.S., commercial/business accounts are not protected by Federal Regulations (consumer accounts are), therefore, many small business accounts are looted and the banks take the POSITION of this video, businesses are going under!
This small business website - yourmoneyisnotsafeinthebank - dot - org
It's very informative and it makes you realize most small, regional banks who outsource their security are no match for eastern european cyber criminals, yet it's your money! Your loss!
Wow... thats alot of hate. The amusing part of this is that you know the customer makes it the banks problem, it doesnt need a punchline... If you dont understand that then dont watch/listen to their material. They assume you have the capability to understand and appreciate their jokes, and by using negative criticism it's obvious you cant. So in short "Bugger off".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Look at their moronic faces: "Can I get my big fat pay cheque now please..we pull stupid expressions, we steal non-comedians' material, we went to Cambridge university..we do criminals a favor..thats enough.. now we deserve to sleep with some sex slaves, and get paid loads of money"
@MoonAharshMistress I... I don't understand how you took all that just from a single frame of their faces.
I can't help but ask, but are you a wizard or something? You, being so perfect and amazing and totally NOT in desire to get paid a lot of money doing something you love, must surely be some kind of divine being, I daresay a GOD! What do we call you, o mighty perfect-face-reader? All hail ye!
this isnt funny because the punchline would have to be that the bank passed the theft's expense on to on to the customer, but as we all know in identity theft cases the bank is legally responsible for not safeguarding by adequate security checks
Another steal that went awry, mitchell and webb. The woman who originally spoke of this idea said that it was a con to get the public whipped up about identity theft regarding investment s since the security of the a/c is not the publics responsibility
but here your joke cant go anywhere since the 'customer character' has a valid point.
You would need the comeback that the bank could claim immunity, and you cant, since you know it not to be true. Doesnt matter that a man has lost all his life savings/business etc...the amount doesnt negate that it woud still be the responsibilty of the bank. mitchell and webb, theyre just observations...not every single intelligent observation is necessariy a joke, or even ausing. Nor can be forced to be.
This is a wonderful use of satire to cut through the subtle lie which is embedded in the term "identity theft", which the media trumpets over and over. In an environment where banks can so easily shift blame in the public sphere, it might be a good idea to stick to cash.
@ChainsawDismember ha ha..the reason it isnt *thought through* is cos they nick material off bugged walls. Stuff gets muffled but theyu try to follow the concept thru as best they can.
Here tho, its just one big FAil. They couldnt hear it to convey it properly, and its only an observation anyway..it doesnt have a punchline.
Wireless identity theft and contactless identity theft. You need to check out the American made Armadillo Dollar and get protected walking through crowds!
No. Different comedy team. Mitchell and Webb are of Peep Show and the Mitchell and Webb Look. Both fantastic and separate from the IT Crowd (also fantastic).
@multitudinal To be fair though, if someone logs into your bank account with your username and password and has enough details to use your money, how are the bank going to stop that? It's your fault for either choosing poor login details or choosing to use internet banking in the first place (I don't use it myself so i'm not quite sure how it works but that makes sense doesn't it?)
Unfortunately what you wrote is not true!! The banks do NOT have to be responsible if a commercial account is looted, they DO call it 'identity theft', rather than 'bank robbery'; and there are not any U.S. federal laws for commercial (business) accounts. If a 'personal' account is hacked - yes - you have federal regulation E that covers the loss, but if a small business is hacked then the money is just GONE, and the banks reply very much the same way this video presents it!
@multitudinal Up to to a point it is the bank's responsibility. There are exceptions, as an example, if you write the password to your email on some paper and leave it lying around, then it's not the email provider's fault.
Preventing identity theft is a joint responsibility of both banks and customers. Banks add more and more security measures, whilst customers ensure privacy by using encrypted wireless connections, not logging in in public places to online banking etc etc
@multitudinal True, same for stolen checks that are accepted. One way id theft can kill is with credit cards. Visa used to cover theft purchases, but I doubt any of them do anymore, but yes, any theft from your bank account is the bank's responsibility. I always thought it was odd that a merchant accepts a check, but the bank is on the hook for it, if its a stolen check, unless they recognize and reject it, i can count on it being caught at my bank in a town of 3,000, but not at a major bank.
This is the most clever bit written by anybody, ever!
