its called death road because the road is a 2-way street pretty much. so imagine trying to fit in 2 cars, one coming from th north and the other from the south in such a thin lane. Its dangerous and its so up high in the mountains...but yeah biking is just an exhilarating experience because u can reach high speeds and the landscape is beautiful :D
*acc's involve planes, trucks, cars, bicycle tourists, but especially: busses.
Crops, fruits, etc. from the jungle go up to La Paz. Therefor climbing traffic = mountain side, descending traffic = valley side. In case of accident, the vehicle and driver are lost, not the crops/fruits/etc...
Now a new road is for descending traffic, old road for climbing traffic.
at least make it a race for money so it becomes a dangerous competition . and step it up to dirt bikes next time better for the camera and its audience
It gets even better with 35 kilos camping equipment. And then even better with 10m visibility due to the misty and rainy circumstances....!
I like recognizing the road somewhere between about 2:15 and 2:20. I have a photo from that curve. Later I made a photo of 2 cars and 1 truck on a narrow part where one can never pass the other.
All in all, it is a great downhill. But the road ahead to Rurrenabaque is at least as interesting to cycle!
In '96 I passed up the chance of a lifetime to go on cycling on the Yungas--I was 24, and very afraid, and opted to stay in LaPaz for the two weeks there. I have heard all of the horror stories since I was a small child.
My question is: Does the road have ANY safe havens or towns or rest-stops along the way, or is it a continual heart-stopping ride the entire 35 miles downhill into Coroico?
It sounds like hell...( I'm keeping it real)--but it's one of the few (thrills) that I would like to experience before I leave this earth (hopefully my death won't be on the Yungas--lol!!)
But the altitude didn't affect me and another girl on the trip. There were 8 of us and everyone else needed to make an adjustment---lol!!! (That was strange--lol!!!)
they were on bicycles lol.. whats the worst that could happen, you fall and skin your knee lol. i feel for the truck drivers though.. fuck drivin over that
it's in bolivia in the department of la paz. i drove on it last night! :) it really is that bad, if not worse. at least they were on bikes.. we were in an suv!
uumm wel on a bike its nothing amazing cuz like bikes r super small like a car would be MUCH more scary i think but w/e uumm wel the only scary part on the bike would be that waterfall
dis is a death road cz loads of ppl hav died on it and hav fallen of the cliff! my mumz cousin went on a bus on the death road and he nearly fell of the cliff!
There was a documentary about this road on discovery channel, I think it was, and they mentioned a man who was on a bus, it lost control and tumbled down the side of the mountain. It killed everyone on the bus except for him, including his wife. His son, it was unconfirmed bc the body was never recovered. Once he got out of the hosital he got on another bus to go back to the crash site to look for his son. The same thing happened. He's now considered cursed amongst the other citizens.
pedaling UP that road would be actually very impressive especially at the elevations over 3000 m...i'm doing 80+ K on my road bike regularly on much shorter descents and don't find it extraordinarily thrilling, even less so must be 90 K on those fat tires
NICEEEE ! i was doing this in italia with my boyfriend and found that already terrifying ... and that with a CAR only hahahahahah. but the views are superb. nice video!
I traveled on a road similar to this when I was living in Tiraque when I was younger. My 80 year old grandfather would be driving his 20 year old jeep all the way near the end of the cliff while drunk. It was something else. I remember the first time when we turned, I was like "AY VIRGENITA SAVE ME" & he almost drove off the cliff. Que puta that was some good memories R.I.P abuelito
this shit ain't scary...its awesome but not scary..i did it about 8 months ago..it's bullshit...the reason people get kiiled there is because they drive like crazy..the road itself isn't that scary.
I give you guys great kudos for riding on one of the world's most dangerous roads!! What these ignorant fucks are not aware of is how narrow that road really gets, and the treacherous terrain that surrounds it. Most of these fagets wouldn't even drive this road in the safest of vehicles.

From the pass it's a little downhill until a village. If you go straight on, you'll be on the new road on the left side of the valley.
Turn right at that village. From there it's until halfway that you'll see houses again. The only 2 until all the way down.
Lots of curves, the cars using horns. It's possible to pass a lot of times, a lot of times it's not.
I've seen trucks pausing on 'safe heavens', drivers sleeping in the shadow under the truck.
At the end, it's 2/300m up again to Coroico...
