This was as real as they come. He was in a gang as a kid and his FRIEND stabbed some dude to death, they caught Ron for it and gave him life and he didn't even think about ratting out his friend. Later in life some junkie who used to hang around his camp tried to rob his house and he shot the dude, but his family were home - a real man IMO.
May he rest in peace. i wasn't alive for most of his career, I had the chance to look back and was impressed with the Coloradoan, he had very good skill, was big and strong, and beat many big names and was beating Ali prior to getting caught by that right hand. He was a warrior, a fighter, and a survivor. His life story is still awesome, that he even lived to be 70 is a miracle unto itself. Nothing phony about the guy, class act all the way. Great video, may he rest in peace.
Ron Lyle once said "don't measure me how far I got, measure me from where I came". Where he came from was "the hole" after serving 7 1/2 years in prison and being stabbed and being pronounced dead twice. He arose from that circumstance to fight for the world's heavyweight championship against one of the greatest ever and although he lost he won the admiration of many. Recently he said, "maybe when they bury me they'll say he wasn't such a bad man". I second that emotion.
rip ron lyles...dame that dude use to hit hard.....never have i seen a young Geogre Formen rocked & dazed so much in a fight....dame lyles was a legend
Another thing that makes Ron's story remarkable was the fact that he suffered a brutal stabbing in jail. When he was undergoing surgery, he was pronounced dead twice on the table and required 35 pints of blood. He recovered and took up boxing. The rest was history. Great video, man.
Ron Lyle one of my fave contenders in history of boxing. Really interesting the success he had in his career despite all his hardships in life. A solid heavyweight and a very cool brother.
Dude was a fighter in every sense of the word. Just reading about how he fought to survive being stabbed in prison was amazing. That's probably why he feared no man in the ring.
damn when did he die?

The guys that weren't great but just good..... It was stacked back then....

Sad thing is alot of the good HWs of that era would beat 95% of the HWs today
SkywarpMach7 3 months ago
@SkywarpMach7 You're right man. Ron Lyle would be a champion today, and a long reigning one. This current heavyweight era is a fucking joke.
