Honestly, we Americans are so self centered, cynical, and distrustful of all things government that I doubt we will ever fully embrace universal healthcare the way Canadians and Europeans have. That and we have been fed so much propaganda over the past 30 years, that the damage has been done. People here are so convinced that any attempt by the government to help everybody and not just the rich is some socialist plot, that I doubt things will really change. I hope I'm wrong though.

But when you are ill you have to pay nothing except 1x10€ ($14 for 3 months) to the physician and maximal 10€ for every medication. It means: if you need a certain medication for a price of 250€, you pay only 10€. A treatment of cancer takes 100.000 €, but you have to pay nothing for it. If the CEO and Board of Directors don't do that, they can be prosecuted by their Shareholders. One day American will get to where Europe is now. Our National Health Service is not perfect, but what is? We Brits would fight with all our collective strength to preserve it. I am a beneficiary of it, having spent 3 months in hospital with blood poisoning when I was young. My parents had to pay not one penny. It is also exceptionally good value - we pay one third of what Americans do and our health care is UNIVERSAL. Emergency treatment is free to anybody, including foreigners.

In our society, there exists a very unfair situation. There are many groups of employees who have no coverage at all. They're found working very hard in diners, restaurants, manufacturing shops, retail stores. I know that these people work hard for their money. They often work long hours at low wages. Should they own a home and should a family member contract a serious illness, the regrettable fact is that they could lose all their property to medical expenses. Is this what society endorses?

Competition assures high quality service at low prices. The Community assures stability and security for this important need since it is the lowest stable-buying unit. A friend in my old company spent more than $100,000 dollars on his son Leukemia treatment the insurance was ready to come up with something to drop them and they sure did by saying the treatment was experimental.

Everyone is covered, rich or poor, old or young. The system is funded through general taxation, but run by health care professionals. Honestly, we Americans are so self centered, cynical, and distrustful of all things government that I doubt we will ever fully embrace universal healthcare the way Canadians and Europeans have. That and we have been fed so much propaganda over the past 30 years, that the damage has been done. People here are so convinced that any attempt by the government to help everybody and not just the rich is some socialist plot, that I doubt things will really change. I hope I'm wrong though.

In Germany you have to pay 15% of your income - by law. (nothing if you are jobless!). But when you are ill you have to pay nothing except 1x10€ ($14 for 3 months) to the physician and maximal 10€ for every medication. It means: if you need a certain medication for a price of 250€, you pay only 10€. A treatment of cancer takes 100.000 €, but you have to pay nothing for it. It´s not socialism, but a social market economy and a real community. What are a few Euros,when you can sleep peacefully?

If the CEO and Board of Directors don't do that, they can be prosecuted by their Shareholders. The Health Care Industry must, unfortunately, maximize profits by seeing that those who are in greatest need of medical coverage don't get it, because they would be a liability to the Corp balance sheet. This goes FAR beyond the Health Care Industry and points to the inherent evils in Capitalism.

Almost invariably, they report from a distinctively left-wing bias and repeat "facts" that are straight from DNC talking points. Case in point: over the last decade there was an endless stream of reporting on rising obesity, but when HC reform took center stage, you saw almost no coverage whatsoever on worsening American health and its enormous effect on HC costs.

One day American will get to where Europe is now. Our National Health Service is not perfect, but what is? We Brits would fight with all our collective strength to preserve it. I am a beneficiary of it, having spent 3 months in hospital with blood poisoning when I was young. My parents had to pay not one penny. It is also exceptionally good value - we pay one third of what Americans do and our health care is UNIVERSAL. Emergency treatment is free to anybody, including foreigners.

What a bizarre notion that health insurance is a right. Why isn't food a right? Or clothing or shelter? None of those are guaranteed.
Only free markets can efficiently allocate scare resources and healthcare is one of them.
First, health care has a cost. I want to ration my own care. I don't want someone else (employer or governement) decidng what health care I can have.
Second, I don't want to burden other people with my health care expenses. Especially my own children (and their children).

It's not the goverments job to take care of you but it is a society's ethical obligation to provide decent health care to sick fellow citizens. We in the Netherlands have a mixed public/private system which works very well. There is a big deal of goverment involvement but then I think the difference between Europe and the US is that in Europe the goverment fears the people and in the US the people fear the goverment....

In our society, there exists a very unfair situation. There are many groups of employees who have no coverage at all. They're found working very hard in diners, restaurants, manufacturing shops, retail stores. I know that these people work hard for their money. They often work long hours at low wages. Should they own a home and should a family member contract a serious illness, the regrettable fact is that they could lose all their property to medical expenses. Is this what society endorses?

First we have to recognize that health Ins. is a right not a privilege. I believe the most efficient and least expensive way for society to buy health insurance is to have the community purchase it in a competitive environment. Competition assures high quality service at low prices. The Community assures stability and security for this important need since it is the lowest stable-buying unit. It also offers prudence and frugality to the purchasing decision since it is very a conservative buyer.

You obviously don't understand the concept of capitalism. Capitalism is run by the people. We decide how much we pay for things by the process of buying it. It's a simple concept called supply and demand. If we quit buying so much there will be excess supply which will lead to lower prices.
The point of this clip is that if we use preventive measures we will not need near the amount of medicine that we are using and prices will drop. Accoding to this film it would drop by 70-72%!

Dear moron: The health insurance industry rarely gets more than 4% profit per quarter. They lose money 1/4 of the time. The one of the highest ever years was 7% profit by cigna in 2006. This information is publicly available. You can check yourself (though you probably wont).
Health insurance costs a lot, but they SPEND IT ALL.
If you have a problem with inefficient health insurance, simply allow them to compete over state lines.

Point us to some other information or resources that further document your claims. I can't find any other source that will substantiate them. How do I know that the 3 of you didn't just make this up? We already have the greatest health care system in the world, we need to keep the intrusive government out of it. To fix HC we need to create access for low income Americans by reducing tort litigation against Doctors and letting the insurance companies compete state-to-state. Health insurance is in need of a tune-up but it is NOT broke. The US Government spending is what's broken. Our nit-wit actor on training wheels is not "fixing" anything.

The way the system is and was is not working at all, but what I do know is instead of filling private companies profits and let it sit idle, I rather (In a perfect world) place it back in the system and let it rotate. In my opinion would rather pay a bit more on my taxes than paying a lawyer to battle my case against Cigna and medical payments.

Everyone is covered, rich or poor, old or young. The system is funded through general taxation, but run by health care professionals. It is not pefect, (what is?) but improving all the time and I believe every civilised society should take of people when they are ill.

It seems the only reasonable thing to do would be to boycott the bad health insurance companies. I know people who get employee health insurance, and they are fat, lazy pigs who smoke and constantly go to the dr.'s, while the healthy guys who take care of themselves pay into it and never use it. People who have health problems should pay more....because nothing is really free. There should be a balance is all I'm saying.

Private Health Insurance is 3 times more cost effective than Government Health Insurance. Government covers 27% of people, it spends as a percentage more than Canada & UK. (this model will cost massive $) It is far more cost effective to go with free market solutions through private insurance. Tort reform & letting insurance co. compete state-to-state, you will see incredible affordability for all Americans to get HC if we go in this direct approach, Obamas takeover style is reckless & wrong.

You can plan to buy a car or a house: it's your own responsibility and your money allocation--but you can't plan a medical affliction. Not the same.
