I bought the DVD twice, and the album twice. Gave it away both times. I listen to this track in my car all the time. What a performance! I was fortunate enough to see this live in Toronto, but in Toronto it was Reginald Veal on bass.
I cannot see the biblical relationship in this music between Able and Cain. One brother slew the other out of jealousy for his gifts. Both of these boys are full of blessings. No hate on this one. No competition either they play very well together.
Wow. Cain and Abel. The purist that loosened up on the right. The mainstay on the left. Wynton and Branford know best who is Cain and who is Abel. I won't compare the musicianship - talent is oozing out here.
I think the belief that "fusion" is more modern than "traditional" jazz is incorrect. Fusion is more recent in history, but both styles of jazz are old. As for Wynton and Branford, they way it works is that Wynton plays his ideas and Branford fills in the gaps. Wynton does gravitate toward older styles now, but in the 80's when Wynton and Branford were playing together, they were interested in the 60's Miles and Trane groups. Hope that information was helpful.
It kinda felt like Wynton was leading and Branford playjng around him... Wynton had his eyes closed the whole time. Branford had more "response" phrases to what Wynton was playing. Maybe that was the intent. I guess actually the intent here is to have a sort of musical confrontation (hence the name of the tune). I wonder which one is Cain and which one is Abel...lol
But Branford is a much better soloist... His tunes with his new band just aren't convenient enough to a listener who has limited time on their hands. But I saw them this summer man, when the band really reached their peak it looked like I was was watching the John Coltrane Quartet. The drummer Justin Faulkner looked just like Elvin Jones... same posture he even looked like a windmill when he let go... Also you may find that Wynton's leading because he has the capabilities to play much louder.
The Marsalis brothers are the cat's meow for this flavor of jazz. For those of us who gravitate towards more modern stylings, it would be hard to find a more amazing pair than the Brecker brothers. Check out their performance here: watch?v=UIGsSLCoIhM.
That's not what he meant. He was commenting on "this flavor of jazz" in this video. Brecker Brothers played a more fusion style which is obviously more modern than the New Orleans type swing music they're playing here. Wynton himself gravitates towards everything old, like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Branford puts out more original modern jazz stuff I feel. Read what people are saying before objecting to them trying to sound "smart".
