Please excuse my total ignorance with this question, but I often see engines, especially automotive converted to aircraft applications with gear reductions and/or belt drive reduction assemblies. Please hold my hand and walk me through this like I am 4 yr old. What advantage does this give to the efficiency of the engine or the thrust of the propeller? Does this improve torque on all styles of engines? Is this necessary in order to get more performance from a particular engine? Pls be kind.

@1955thekeeper When the propeller tip speed exceeds the speed of sound, its efficiency decreases drastically. So re-drives are used to keep the tip speed below the speed of sound, mainly. There are other reasons that are more complicated, but this is the main reason.

Looks like a nice set up.  What redrive is that and how many belts? Also, what kind of gauge in the center (rpm).
