notice he swapped the ball from left to right to left arm in swatting off those tackles.
i was selling icecreams at the m.a.noble stand directly behind this and it was the last play of the half. absolutely everybody at half time was talking about what they just saw.
it's not apparent on the footage but he was so fast for a big man.
the raiders had been drinking non stop for the 7days before the widnes match, flew around the world, got 3 tries up in the first 12 mins, and promply ran out of puff.
if you want to believe that widnes 89 team was better than a side with mal meninga, laurie daley, ricky stuart, john ferguson, steve walters, bradley clyde, glenn lazarus, gary belcher in it then so be it.
Even today it's a fair try. Parramatta broke through the defensive line, meaning the defence was turned around and Sterlo was a support player and not decoy. .
melbourne storm:Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Israel Folau, Cameron Smith, Matt King, Cooper Cronk, Dallas Johnson. im not a storm fan but i acknowledge the talent they got & yeah, theyr all classy
we'll never see a try like that EVER again or a team as great as parra in the 80's. thanks for the memories eric, brett, peter, mick, ray and the rest of u eels.
Uh they weren't the most dominant team in the 80's...In the 80's 'Dogs won 1980, 1984, 1985 and 1988 With the Eels taking it out 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986..Quite an even share if you ask me.
the EELS won 4 first grade premierships(81,82,83,86),were runners-up twice(84,85),had 3 third grade premierships(80,82,84),four club championships(80,81,82,86),were twice mid-week cup winners(80,86),had one Rothmans Medal winner(Sterling,87),two Dally M winners(Price 83, Sterling 87),thats very impressive and i havent even mentioned the number of EELS players who were selected in Origin and Kangaroo teams in that era. i repeat PARRAMATTA IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL TEAM OF THE 80'S.
Dude why do you count third grade premierships? What matters is FIRST Grade..
Mid-week cup winners, pfft, asif that ever mattered, thats like Cronulla claiming a premiership win was their Amco Cup, where as Dally M's go to individual players, not the team as a whole. When the 'Dogs dominated in 2002-2006, hardly any of those players were selected in Origin you had 3 max. We were runners-up with you guys in 84 and 86. Rep Selection means jack all in terms of how successful a club is.
well the Daily Telegraph thinks i am right seeing as that is where i got my stats from, under the heading of "parra, most successful league club of 1980's".
I remember the Ray Warren commentary on this try. It went something like this - "Look at Grothe, beat 1, beat 2, look at Grothe, beat 3, beat 4.. HE'S BEATEN 5, OH WHAT A TRY! THAT'S ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRIES YOU'LL EVER SEE!!"

Cantebury shit out of facing Widnes in 88. Wise decision on their part as it happens - judging on what happened to Canberra against us in 89!

Hate to dissapoint doggies fans, but 1980 was the last year of the 1970s, so you only got 3 in the 80s

Does anyone have footage of that famous dummy that Kenny thew that time?
It might have been in the same game im not sure..
MatyCraig1 3 years ago
No, that was in the 1981 grand final against Newtown. He threw the dummy to get past Phil Sigsworth. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I never get tired of watching it. I was a kid growing up in the 80's and Parra was my team. Just an amazing period and brings back great memories.

u kidding right? u believe what they say? The ppl who hire Rebecca Wilson?
The Daily telegraph has the biggest bias towards the Bulldogs, that and they are full of sh!t anyway...

Since when did the dogs dominate in 2002-2006...
chineseomg 3 years ago
2002 - Docked points for breaching cap, yes i admit this, otherwise by far the best team in the comp
2003 - 2nd, lost in the prelim finals
2004 - Won Premiership
2005 - Injuries crippled the 'Dogs, more than any other team
2006 - Came 2nd, one game short of a Grand Final
Seems pretty dominant to me
DeceptiveWarrior 3 years ago
haha pls u may aswel say the broncos were a force 2 in those yrs.
they never missed a finals series and were premiers in 2006.
2007 - injuries 2 key players near finals
2008 - unlucky to lose to storm. 1 game away from the GF
2009 - going great guns so far even tho ppl had written bronc's off at start of season
GO THE BRONCO'S 2009!!!!

I'm a huge parra fan but you're wrong about runners up in 85 . St George were, they knocked us out in the semi.
Parra and the dogs were even in the 80's and different teams altogether
bestywins 2 years ago
Cheers for putting that up, mate. Growing up as a kid in the 80's that brought back some fantastic memories.
I doubt we'll ever have a team with so many classy players.

80's Parra were simply awsome. Sterling, Cronin, Wynn, Price, Grothe, Edge, Kenny - just magic. I had all the footy cards.

Bless your parramatta socks for putting this up. Have been boring people about that try for years, now I can show em. Typically modest too, the Guru.

Glory days, as a kid growing up in the eighties, Parramatta ruled, too bad when Price and Cronin retired that was the end of the domination.
