It's cool how everybody asking questions is nice and respectful and J5 are pros as always and I've yet to see an interview where they "big league" anybody, always down to earth. at about 2:09 the reason why everyone claps and laughs is because after michael said about 9, if you listen very closely someone in the background says "oh darn, it was really great" thats why he says thanks a lot.. haha i love him! and his amazing soothing voice! xx

He and his brothers were instructed by Motown to present themselves as two years younger than their actual ages so that they would appeal to the pre-teen and teenage markets for as long as possible. Motown also had them record multitudes of songs so that when their voices changed due to puberty, there would be a stockpile of the "younger" voices that the public was used to hearing.
What cracked up the Soul Train Gang after Michael answered the question regarding how old he was on the Diana Ross special? I couldn't quite hear that Soul Train dancer's response to Michael's answer. Whatever it was, it made everyone there laugh.
